  • does anyone know the amp he is using here?

  • @EvaSlash

Very likely JCM800 boosted up, probably with some delay, chorus added.

  • Before people bitch John Sykes was amazing! Imagine If John Sykes, Adrian van den berg, Steve Vai and Doug Aldrich could all get together and make Whitesnake the Shredding Years. What a f*cking Album!!!! Whitesnake FTW!!!

  • John is a fantastic player and he´s a great singer, too.

    \m/

    Cheers,

    Robin :o)

  • Gary Moore is better.......

  • @mrkakakas

Gary Moore had more in his locker. RIP.

  • @Gonzoidz Of course my friend ..have a look at this site ;) garymoorefc. com check out the forum also !

  • Sykes-era Whitesnake had the best songs, but Whitesnake Today has the best guitar players. Aldrich and Beach!!

  • It's Ted's brother..>!!!!!!

  • Ala evh :)

  • It sounds like a big ball of spikey iron rolling down a very long tin roof.

    It sounds ass-fuck-bad.

I'd much rather hear (all fucking day) the two opening notes to Foxy Lady, and that is Hendrix's worst song.

  • @parafleet just a bunch of tricks. too bad because he is a good song writer, but it doesn't make him a good live soloist I guess.

  • Это круто!!!!

  • @greenballed nigels solo was the most beautiful guitar solo ever. he puts everyone to shame.

  • the orgasm lasted 2:28 minutes and then I raped the replay button again...

  • Nigel Tufnel's solo makes these guys look like children.

  • I am having a heart attack.............

  • One of the most underrated musicians of all time. He's the real deal, Guitar God!

  • Gary Moore clone. Sorta;/

  • Gibson DirtyFingers! Its in the Bridge!!! I have to get one!

  • Double Yawn...Schenker blows him so far away it's funny.

  • Under rated God unfortunately

  • His style is similar to Gary Moore

  • @rallyivan1234 Yes. It turns out I'm not one noticed the influence of GM.

  • 0:58 dragonforce ;)

  • Grandissimo chitarrista!!!

  • This man is absolutely heavenly! Creative.... and easy on the eyes ;-)

  • Great Guitar Groove!

    Awesome Playing

    SS.

  • John Sykes the the real guitarist for Whitesnake!

  • @Sneixx - AMEN!!!!

  • this is what dirty fingers pick-ups sound like! :D

  • yawn

  • He can also Sing !!!

  • The audience is shit.

  • I am very younger days..

Go to this live [supae rock 84] in Osaka place !!

It was very hot summer days..

This clip is Tokyo ver. very cool !!!

  • Widdly widdly wank, just out to impres. John Sykes is and has always been an arrogant arsehole and a 2nd hand copy of his teacher Gary Moore. Here he `s running licks no one will ever remember. Boring and with no feel at all.

  • @PerfectStreetRanger You have no idea what your talking about dickhead! Lets see you even try to attempt this. He is one of the greatest 'untaught' guitarists that has ever lived in the history of guitar, and just look at the credits by people like Zack Wylde & Joe Satriani have given John. You 'sir' are not a guitar player, and if you are, then you will no doubt be pretty shit if you think that John Sykes is a copy of Gary Moore. An as for arrogance, Bolox, he has always polite and charming!

  • @thedigitalemotion had a few vinyls of gary back in the day and can't say sykes sounds like he was that influenced by Gary. But then again I don't compare guitarist that much, i either enjoy them or i don't

  • simple scales, my mama can play this shit better

  • @CharveI you're mama can eat MY shit better too

  • I've heard better.....

  • "1987" album was written by Coverdale and Sykes and we can't hide that this album made Whitesnake worldwide popular. And DC with all respect should shame on himself, no matter why Sykes was kicked out of the band by DC David should keep him. Becouse of Sykes's talent Whitesnake was so great after 1984! Without Sykes there would be no "Is this love", " Still of the night", "Here I go again" and the rest. DC is great but we can't forget about John - the most underrated guitarist in the history !

  • underated.

  • like gary moore

he used his pick like satch 3 years before him

  • @phenixreturns A lot of guys were tap hammering with thier picks

before Satriani. Frehley,Hackett,Morse,Holdsworth. You are right though

Satch does get a little too much credit at times.Moore and Sykes are icons

  • John Sykes is an AMAZING guitarist. I can't believe more people don't know about him. He's the one who made Whitesnake one of the greatest bands in rock history. I hope to one day be as good of a guitarist as he is.

  • Im gonna get every CD that John Sykes been on

  • He is "THE" most underrated guitar player I know of. The solo in Valley of the Kings is one of my favorite solos ever, and I have been playing guitar for thirty years.

  • He deserved to be in Def Leppard instead of Vivian Campbell, he would an amazing duo with Phil Collen, just imagine!!!

  • Sykes..one of the best ever.

  • brought to you from the school of Edward Van Halen.

  • i have blisters on my fingers!

  • He's got almost 2 and half minute orgasm!!!

I have to definitely improve my guitar skills ;)

  • That guy is amazing. Guitar straight into an amp. No bullshit. But he's an arrogant fucking piece of shit and THAT'S why he will NEVER be in the rock hall or in a band that means anything. Nobody can stand him. Thin Lizzy did it for the money. David Coverdale knew he could get a better guitar player with HALF the ego and he did. John Sykes is awesome. No doubt. But he's a jerk. And when there are 100 guys nipping at your feet to do the EXACT same thing, you should be nice and shut the fuck up..

  • Doug Aldridge is a Phiysical clone of Sykes

  • i add the great tone

  • I like his guitar playing but for some reason I don't like his tone. Maybe it's the video quality?

  • @ickypopcss Yeah I think the poor quality makes it sound harsher than it is

  • Hes always been a bit too close to gary moores metal playing to be considered original as far as im concerned

  • He looks like young James Hetfield. hahaha! Don't ya think?

  • John Sykes' hair is as wild as his guitar playing lol

  • thats how it has to be done

  • so ein irrer zu geil!!!!!

  • he has a nice tone

  • My God! the audience sucks ass!

  • Not really, for a long time the Japs didn't know how to let go at a Rock concert. In their culture, going nuts would be considered impolite. If you look at Japanese audiences in the 70's, they'd just sit there with their hands folded. People are different in different parts of the world. In some parts of the world it's an insult to offer a handshake. Btw, Asian chicks have sideways pussies.

  • did not give him a guitar in hand

  • What makes John Sykes amazing is that he's got three very developed skills:

    1. He can shred.

    2. He can write amazing riffs.

    3. He can write amazing songs. Most guitar players have ONE of these skills. It's very rare to find somebody with two of them...and when you've got three...you're in a league all your own.

He's also not a bad singer either although it would be a stretch to compare him to a legendary rock voice like Paul Rogers or even David Coverdale.

  • @ksmithdc Er, no he cant. Hes ok at the solo shit, but he cant write a song for toffee!! Are you a bit simple in the head? Dont get me wrong, hes a great player, but song writer? You got to be kidding us?

  • @coltsuperocean10 He can't write a song? Oh you mean except for writing the entire 1987 Whitesnake album - which has gone multi-platinum? You mean except for writing the Blue Murder albums...and songs for Thin Lizzy? Dude, obtain a clue before you run your mouth.

  • @ksmithdc Oh fucking hell!! I do apologise!! I forgot about those fuckin classics. Yep hes up there with Bill and fucking Ben with those "forgettable" giants!! Hahahaha you fucking knobhead!! You should obtain a fucking brain to look for a fucking clue you retard!! Jake Sykes? Who???

  • @coltsuperocean10 You should apologize. You're a tone deaf idiot troll. The day you have accomplished more than John Sykes is the day I will take you seriously. Until then go fuck yourself.

  • @ksmithdc You retarded spastic!! I couldn`t give a fuck if you take me seriously!! This guy is fucking average, I can play this shit!! Go see Paul Gilbert you knobhead!!

  • @coltsuperocean10 That's good you don't care that I don't take you seriously. Truly, I think I'm going to sleep better at night knowing this. LOL Paul Gilbert is a great shredder - and grew up about 20 miles from me. Great shredder, but what great songs has he written? I thought that's what we were discussing...songwriting skills. PLEASE obtain a clue because you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

  • @ksmithdc Thats the the problem. I wasnt discussing Sykes ability as a song writer, he doesn`t have any!! hahaha thick yank twat!! He isn`t even that great a shredder. You need to get a fucking brain cell to communicate with the one floating around in that space you call a brain!! "Obtain a clue" what sort of retard fucking speak is that you stupid fucking dickhead? I dont give a fuck about stupid fucking knuckle dragging, trailer park shit like you!! hahaha you dozy bastard!!

  • @coltsuperocean10 Do me and everyone else a favor and go wash your mouth out with a revolver. Hahahahahahaha!!!!!

  • @ksmithdc Feeling stupid are you? Been made to look like a cunt? hahahaha go fuck yourself you thick bastard!!

  • @coltsuperocean10 LOL! Does your crack whore mother know you're playing on her computer again? You live on a filthy island. Go cut up some chum you ridiculous moron.

  • @ksmithdc hahahahaha Ive got you so wound up!! The veins in your fat neck are about to pop!! Hahaha I own a holiday villa on this island, my main home is in London and I have an apartment in New York. You poor fat bastard, its your fat ugly Mother thats the crack whore you fat sweaty bastard!! Does your boyfriend play on your computer you retarded fag queen? hahaha watch those veins dont pop old man!! ps, what does "go cut up some chum" mean?

  • @ksmithdc Paul gilberts actually come up with some cool ideas in his songs, what I dont like is its like he takes a while thinking up ideas for rhythm parts then thinks "right, SOLO TIME!" and just cycles round the same licks over and over. Which is fine but with his solos its really noticeable

  • @coltsuperocean10 Thin Lizzy is awesome

  • @C861986 I agree

  • @ksmithdc Nope, you don't say what skills he have. You just say he is a real musician :))))

  • @ksmithdc yes but he is a terrible bad singer let's be honest he should hire a vocalist.

  • @ksmithdc Its not rare to find someone who can shred at all. I can shred like that...Almost anyone can parrot it, it takes skill to write it. Anyone can learn to shred.

  • @ksmithdc have you heard the first blue murder record???? Listen to that and then you should add a number 4 as Great Singer. His singing is as great as the other 3. His voice is different than Coverdale but just as good. If he had better luck and timing he would have been a household name. Most people associate his work with others he played with. He got out on his own too late. Music changed and he was a day late and a dollar short. I still have blue murder in my rack. It's undrated

  • @ksmithdc Do not forget he possesses an unmatched vibrato.

  • @ksmithdc

you are so 100% right man.

    what a brilliant musician.

  • @ksmithdc My favorite guitarist by far!!! He does have all these radd skills!! A soulful technical master! LOL!!

  • the think that makes Sykes awesome to me is not just his obvious talent as a guitar player, but he could also write better songs than pretty much every other guitar player listed on this page

  • A lot of Sykes guitar playing is a Gary Moore influence. Listen close you can hear it. Gary Moore influenced a lot!

  • Sykes has, in my opinion, the best vibrato. I cant think of another guitar player who works vibrato better than him. So smooth, so in time with the music. Thats the key, anyone can bend a string, but to do it in pitch and in time is another thing.

  • Yeah, Sykes is good but so are Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Jeff Loomis and not forgetting Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine. I used to think Sykes was the best till I heard these guys play but also like Schenker, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore ect too

  • Micheal Schenker for vibrato. Malmsteen also has a FABULOUS vibrato if he would just slow the fuck down and let people HEAR it. When Malmsteen plays SLOW (rarely), and I hear his vibrato I wanna cry cause mine sucks so bad. :( . Schenker is like B.B. King, WELL known for his vibrato. Sykes has got a good one too.

  • @marcusdolby-exactly.his is a true vibrato, with feeling and you can tell it's his.Yngwie has a good one too.I'd say about 99.9% of shredders have an awful vibrato and just do it to fake feeling.

  • Scott Gorham has the best vibrato (and tone) in the Universe.

  • scott gorhams tone on the live and dangerous album is immense

  • It's sad how weak some of those crowd cheers are when he pauses for a second... Sykes is an awesome awesome player.

  • 80s metal guitarists tried to copy evh a lot but the goods ones allways found their own style and mixed it with evh stuff, for example john sykes.

  • John sykes is amazing

  • deadly guitar solo

  • I dont like this guitar solo.

  • I like John Sykes but this looks like EVH parody

  • all 80s shredders look like Evh parodys eventually, he did make most of the tricks in the book haha.

  • I don't know why everyone argues about this. If you watch or read any interviews with 80's guitarists, they ALL mention Eddie at some point. He didn't write the book on metal/rock guitar, he just added about 7 chapters

  • Solo está hacendo escalas rapidamente...

  • Claaro.. cualquiera lo hace igual ¿no? ...

  • Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery--at least John didn't drink himself out of an amazing career---hats of to Ed,, but he's done

  • WTF?? yeah!!

  • john sykes one of the most underrated guitar players of all the time.

  • Ok, today everyone wants to shred, but are they playing it like he does on a les paul? I think they can't shred like he does on such a les paul... try it, its fucking hard.

  • For me it's easier to shred on a Les Paul. The shorter scale and tilt back neck design work wonders for string tension.

  • Well said - I can do it though lol - but I have been doing it for 20 years!

  • you've sure got that right!

the les paul is the most unforgiving guitar you can possibly play,

miss one note and it sounds bad for 10 secs after

  • thats because u play just one right note and it still sounds good 10 secs after.

  • Sykes is a fuckin' god

  • awesome

  • Nice freakin Les Paul....

  • You have to consider that a lot of 80s guitarists were spending most of their time making songs and didn't spend a lot of time putting together instrumentals. Also, it was customary to do an unaccompanied solo and show off in this manner. The saving value of the whole thing was that it wasn't always the same. And good things came out of them, like EVH coming up with some really inventive stuff live on the fly.

Yngwie is great, ok but when the band stops playing he sounds all noodly too.

  • ADVENTURE BOUND SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF CHARLOTTESVILLE V.A. 1985-1987 CONTACT ME @ merishane ON YOU-TUBE,IF YOU WAS THERE @ THAT TIME !! CSC/09 IN LYNCHBURG V.A. !! WAS ZAPPING FAIRVEIW HEIGHT'S (CAMPBELL AVE.) ?

  • nobody compares to uli jon roth he is the real master

  • Hello.. this was in 1984.. solos today are more complex.. back then everyone wanted shredding. Hell, look at Yngwie.

I think Sykes is an excellent guitarist.. next to John Petrucci. :P

  • Yeah, it's really hard playing all octatve solo's and your songs in drop "D".

  • are u retarted shredding! that emo crap how does tht have any emotion?

  • although I like Sykes, this is nothing but shreding.. no emotion..

  • he he thats good i think but he reaminds me about eddie van halen or slash from gnr

  • I agree. He's played better solos than this overly technical one.

  • this solo is so boring....

  • great hair

  • Hairdo widdleups and wibbledowns!

  • i could be better then him . . but im not

  • sykes rapes aldridge, get over it.

  • aldridge was an ex-whitesnake drummer :P you're thinking of Aldrich. easy mistake though

  • He's better than Ringo too

  • please.....just cus his a "tapping-neo-classical" player it doesnt make him better then no one... players are all different, and if you find more art in a kinda ballad soloist as aldrich instead a shredder noisey hyper fast player like this fucker it means that you have good musical taste, as it should be....loving the music.....not showing off

and that´s exactly why players like hendrix and page are more legendary and respected than shredders of the new century..

    pd: herman li sucks cock

  • totally agree with you man

  • wh00terman, you must be an idiot or a troll

  • calling me an idiot? how does sykes not rape aldridge at guitar?

  • tbh i wouldnt underestimate aldridge as a guitarest,he is ALOT better than most people think!

  • Well, he plays in front of thousands of people, and has been doing it for a while. None of the people posting here does that. So who cares if anyone plays better than him. He is doing what he loves and has influenced many players along the way. How many of you can say that?

  • yeah man.

  • Sykes is not a guitar wanker...,you`re right about that my son. He`s best when he show`s some soul. :) Peace

  • It's in E minor.

  • quite underwhelming

  • John Sykes is one of the best guitarists ever

  • Fuck Vai he's not a Rocker! If you want to listen to esoteric experimental jazz fusion, he's your guy ( although I would recommend Allen Holdsworth if that your thing) Sykes ROCKS and he can shred as well.

  • sos tan poco inteligente ojala te mueras de cancer

  • By the looks of it, one of the few Brits with nice teeth

  • John Sykes is an excellent guitarist... probably having an off night so pulled out some random shred here. Still a few tasty bits if you listen close enough.

  • cool

  • Vais contribution to whitesnake is meaningless... Sykes wrote the sickest riffs and the solos he threw down on the album are beyond priceless. I agree this solo is nothing specail... but Vai is such a masturbator... his fruity playing, joke sounding licks, dainty ladyboy vibarato, and wammy bar overuse all come together to solidify his wanker status. Sykes absolutely rocks with heart and soul in the full band context. there is no question about this. Vai is a masturbator of the highest degree.

  • Both Vai and Sykes are absolutely great and unique players. Both deserve big respect for their contributions to many fantastic albums. And I think they don`t care about your cheap, jealous and useless little comments. Let`s see your solos here on youtube and talk then...

  • I don't like Vai's playing... I'm not a fan.. if you dont agree with me thats fine. I think Sykes is excellent... this video does not sum him up as a guitarist. I am pretty sure neither of them care about the fact that anyone comments about them on youtube.

  • Also, it's clear that you're a Vai fanboy, and you want to stick it to me for not worshipping your hero. So you actually are telling me that I should post a video of my playing and then, depending on how good it is, my comments will have merit? I am not jealous of Vai at all... there are many guitarists I am jealous of, but definitely not him...his playing does not appeal to me.

  • I am definitely a big fan of Vai and I don`t care, if you worship him or not. But whats the reason for insulting him here (except of being jealous) ?

  • well Vai's playing is genious so doesn't matter if you like him or not it's obvious that he can blow away everyone ;) so stop talking bullshits and makeyourself feel a "cool guy" cause you're thinking that vai sucks. What a poser

  • your comment is so fucking stupid that it undermines you completely. I dont even have to say anything. you did the job for me. gay bitch.

  • I don't give a shit about your opinion!

  • For me Sykes is the best player for whitesnake (Vai and others are great players but sykes has a very good feeling between blues and heavy rock, i like his flashy solos

  • kinda like your mom?

  • It's like he never learned how to play "Eruption" right. It reminds me of Nigel's solo in Spinal Tap. All the concerts I saw in the 80's, and damn near the same solo every time. I guess we have to have SOMETHING to watch while Coverdale gets a blowjob.

But yeah, with a band-Sykes rocks!!!

  • in all honesty I prefer his soloing or most players when thy have a cool chord progression in the background to play to ,this is where sykes really kills most players..Eg pretty well any solo on the Whitesnake "Whitesnake" album. Or Blue Murder work or his thin Lizzy stuff. This is not his best in my opinion but doesnt mean hes not a better player than any of you arseholes critisizing form your armchairs that cant even play Jingle Bells...

  • no doubt bro

  • wow! thats some serious improvisation action!!

  • He just kept getting better every year. His best work was with Blue Murder, in my opinion.

  • I loved this guys work with Whitesnake, he laid down some sick solos.

  • pretty boring in my book.. but clean

JS is alright he's got good sound etc. but he certainly isn't a virtuoso

  • dude the influence Van Halen has had on all the guitarists in the 80's is insane, sick solo
