  • riverdance or stomp? hmmmmm i pick both

  • this makes every irish soul soar

  • The irish have mastered the art of drumming with their feet

  • I turned on just to watch the usual embarrassing interlude - I didn't even know where it was being staged. And then this happened. And I thought "this is bloody amazing". And I still do.

Eurovision has had the odd moment since then (Lordi, for daring to be different, for example) but this is the best ever. Trust the Irish to get culture right for once.

  • I actually remember this being broadcast quite well. The 90s were a great time, before we lost ourselves in the greed of the boom and the apathy of the bust.

  • Michael Flatley is just a posing flamenco dancer unless he's beside Jean Butler.

Oh, 5.51 cameraman trying to keep all dancing feet and bouncing boobies in shot.....good boy cameraman, I salute you sir!

  • @dubcindub15 Yeah Flatley and his Musically Inserted Taps.........

  • @dubcindub15 ya man 100% Flatley ruins it for me

  • I still remember this moment and always will. Was just about to walk out the door thinking the local pipe band were about to start and then the first note was sung and i was glued to the screen from that moment, mouth open with pure awe. The shots of the feet on the floor brought out the "what the hell" Irish in me to just get up and bang your feet to the beat regardless of whether I had a clue of what I was doing! and have been doing so ever since!!!!

  • Are people seriously talking about the Vikings? Ha. The Vikings never really invaded Ireland, not in the traditional sense. Yes they founded many of Irelands cities and they pillaged and plundered and all that. But the truth is that they settled rather than invaded. Invasion implies subjugation, but the Vikings, after their initial raids, basically became immigrants and inter-married with the Irish. Most of Ireland was still ruled by Irish kings. Also the Irish aren't really Celts.

  • Country in Ruins, corrupt politicians, fallen banks, under the control of the IMF.....but then you see this and it makes you proud to be Irish

  • 1994! bloody hell time certainly flies!

  • My X Girlfriends mum is one of the back up dancers for this well not this video i dont think

  • It doesnt matter how many times you watch this, it is still stunning.

  • Stunning - after all these years it is still the best

  • ireland will return to it's rightful place leading with others following.....

  • @masterbilldj

I certainly hope so. Such a wonderful Country to be proud of - and I am in London!

  • @masterbilldj

What Ireland needs to do is stop trying to mimic that other Euro-trash and come up with some original material.

  • Gives me chills every time

  • awesome ireland

  • The reaction is priceless.

  • She is gorgeous!! ^^

  • I just cried at the finale... I'm still a man

  • For 6 minutes the world was silent... And then it exploded in cheer and happiness!

  • Ta siad go hiontach!!

  • It must be embarrasing for Eurovision that this group outshines any other act over the past 17 years.

  • I remember watching this live ..was it really 17 years ago ...Wow...! Still mesmerising though.

  • every one dat has ever bin involved wit riverdance and dat has performed in riverdance deserve amazin applause without a dout de greatest live show dats ever bin made de nite i went i was in total awe of every performer i'll never forget it wow wow wow

  • i LOVE this. and i know the routine! go Irish Dancing! x

  • its bloody flawless. how the hell did they all stay in time with each other??? PHENOMENAL.

  • This was the highest point for Eurovision. Ever since, it has gone downhill.

  • Wow wow wow wow wow - EVERY time I watch this I am so moved by the whole thing - not least the audience eruption at the end,

To coin a phrase - they don't make 'em like that anymore !

  • Maith thu go leir ! goed gedaan

  • my jaw just dropped when i saw her dance. it looks hard enough, can't imagine how hard it is to do it barefooted!

  • Comment removed

  • its soooo hard to learn :@

  • Ahhh... back before Michael was so full of himself. Jean didn't get nearly the credit she deserved and still deserves. She choreographed a good majority of 'Riverdance'!

  • this is back when ireland was proud and didnt choose people like jedward to represent them!

  • Still gives me goosebumps : )

  • the 81 people who don't like this aren't irish and don't know what talent is

  • Michael Flatley is a beautiful man with hair like a pony's.

  • @SoyMilkMongoose i LOL'd so hard at that comment :L

  • @TeaDrinker3000 Ha ha. I'm not going to lie though, I stole that line from MadTV except it was about John Edwards in the skit. Still true about Michael Flatley though. :P

  • You will never know the true soul of Ireland until you have seen us dance and sing.

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  • This is the true Soul of my Country - NOT the fat arsed bankers ,no, nor the equaly fat arsed politicians who lick the bankers arses!!!!!!!!!.

  • You know those occasions when you say, "I wish I'd been there" .....?

Every time i watch this it still amazes... stunning

best thing to ever come out of eurovision... give it to the irish again

  • this was electric when it was first shown!! amazing!

  • I do love this show, Im interested in irish culture and country (i would like to go there) , really, but its a song contest or not?

  • @22Katsz Riverdance weren't famous or known at this time and they came onto the EuroVision SongContestas the interval while the judges made their choice for the winner of the actual competition.

Riverdance was better than the actual acts!! :D x

  • @xgirlsrulex9 thank you the answer :):)

  • @22Katsz Nooo problemo :)

  • this inspired me to... RIVERDANCE

  • LOL can you imagine this got famous being an interval act! Such magic.

  • I remember watching the Eurovision where Riverdance was the Interval music/performance - and it was by a significant margin the best performance of the entire show. I thought it was fabulous then and do still. However, this recording strongly resembles the Riverdance show itself, composed by Bill Whelan as a response to the success of the Interval music, rather than the Interval music itself. I don't actually remember Jean Butrler and Michael Flatley in the Eurovision interval piece.

  • @shyjonty I believe that both Flatley and Butler WERE part of the original performance. I also checked online sources that agree. Whelan also composed the original performance.

  • anyone know the name of this song they dance to?:)

  • @xxxsarah2kii8xxx riverdance by any chance ??

  • I find it amusing how naive people are in thinking that a Riverdance performance can change a country's finances. No, it cannot. You need good financial management, and politicians who are willing to reduce debt. You can play this youtube video until the cows come home, but it won't make an ounce of difference to your economy's travels down the toilet. Oh well, they are rather good dancers.

  • My Dad always talks about the day this was on TV when he was at a wedding in Dublin. The whole after-party had congregated around one big TV because something amazing was happening at the eurovision. He says when the performance finished, all of them let out a huge roar and gave it a round of applause.Proud to be Irish!

  • Thumbs up if you are watching this in 2011!

  • @TheEmzySquared I'm watching this in 2004 while impregnating your whore of a mother with YOU. Thumbs up so he can see his fathers post!

  • @TheEmzySquared When else would I be fucking watching it, 1967?

  • This Makes Me Soo Proud To Be Irish !

  • Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I watch this.

  • Dang. That guy could start a fire with his feet. :)

  • DUBLIN,TEXAS CAMEL PARK ANNE FRANK BUTLER

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL...LOVE TO ALL O

  • absolutely stunning!!! i read somewhere that michael flatley got the world record for fastest tap dancing.

  • I Bet the other countries we thinking "Thank cripes they weren't entered in the contest, else we might as well just forget about winning and go home now"

  • yeah, that was really great. But can anybody tell me the name of the melody? where can i download it?

  • It's a matter of pride.

  • @STEINBRG yeah i can completely agree with you. i spent a few days in Ireland a few months ago and i must say that i've never felt such cordiality and hospitality when i was travelling. there was always someone who invites you, helps you or just spends some of his time to go for a guinness. i didn't know such frankness from my homeland Germany nor from any other country i've been to. and yeah, the landscape is such a beautiful thing to see. can't wait to be back again...

  • Wh can't Ireland send something like 2007 and 1996 again?

  • Get so emotional watching this, this was a life changing moment for me as a kid to watch this...made many decissions based on that first impression of how wonderful Ireland is. This performance is bordering on otherworldy!

  • Wouldn't it be amazing if tap dancing was a Language.

  • Jesus please stop all the this poor old Ireland talk!! We will be FINE!!

  • @bigbasso11

it's just americans projecting their problems. We're having economic troubles that are starting to cause real real trade status dangers. So americans are projecting on ireland becasue you're supposedly in dire straits too.

  • Inspiring! A beautiful combination of music and dance. Always gives me a great sense of pride! RK xx

  • We're broke but never broken!

  • This once again backs up the fact that Ireland is the greatest country in the world

  • @MrSimo552

    Damn right!!

  • @stephenm28

    Damn right x 2!

  • Ireland in the 90's we won the eurovision four times and exported Riverdance worldwide, these days we depend on the likes of Jedward and Crystal Swing, what the hell happened

  • @MrSean677 we're hardly depending on Jedward and Crystal Swing, they're more of a..source of amusement

  • My wife and I happened to be visiting her family in London in 1994 at this time and thought we would tune in to the Euerovision contest for a laugh, and a diet of cheese and corn. This was jaw dropping--completely unexpected, and it was the interval performance. I don't remember any of the songs, but I've never forgotten this. Too bad they couldn't give it the prize. Don't know, but this must be the greatest moment in the history of that contest. (Volore a distant 2nd.)

  • Makes Me Proud To Be Irish ! <3

  • im always bursting with pride when I watch this.

  • iv seen the river dance many times but i realised after seeing it performed for the queen i had never seen it the first time it was performed, i actually shed a couple of tears because im exremely proud to be irish..

  • @elmowantweed Same here, simply marvellous, then and now.

  • ohhh gives me all sorts of gasms, eargasms orgasms, and lots lots more :)

  • I do not find this difficult to masturbate to.

  • IRELAND SHOULD SEND MORE CELTIC SONGS TO THE EUROVISION!!!!!

    CELTIC MUSIC IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • No one remembers the songs from this year lol, only this act! The only interval act to receive a standing ovation!!

  • Jean Butler and Michael Flatley are such phenomenal dancers. The show is not the same without them.

  • I am in love with this song - the dance, the violin, the beats - everything! This is more what the Irish needs :D a bit of their culture!

  • best interval act ever!!! never gona top it...unless Ireland win again:p

  • only found out 2 months ago Michael Flatley's not irish. couldnt beliee it haha

  • @blackpen2011 haha i know:P but his parents are..so he kinda is!

  • not a hope in hell the interval act tonight will come anywhere near as good as this...:D

  • Eurovision's greatest interval act ever!

  • Fuck.... my.... Life!!!!.... I always get chills wen i watch this vedio!!!!.... So proud to be Irish its unreal!!!

  • What is this song called? Also, so proud to be an Irish Dancer!!! My teachers is friends with Michael Flatley - he came to watch our class once!!! :)

  • Stavros!

  • 79 jealous people that there country cant produce something like that.

  • Beautiful!

  • This is actually amazing. Never having been to Ireland it really is interesting to contrast the wider public perceptions of the 'Irish' as this nation of drunk leprechaun red heads vs a nation that can produce such an intense culture and identity. Ive certainly put Ireland on my list of places to visit.

  • @RWJSTheBoxer Nice to see such an insightful comment on youtube. Well said :)

  • @RWJSTheBoxer Oh dear, where on earth are you living! There are actually very few red heads, they mostly live in Scotland :-)

  • @RWJSTheBoxer A much maligned sober red head here whose ancestors go back to the time of Brian Boru, though I unfortunately can't claim leprechaun blood as well, worse luck. Red heads are inimitably Irish but unfortunately, a dying breed, only 4% (I think) of the pop. can claim the colour authenically now. I am however, looking forward to being a rare collectable in the future.

  • @breedak Eh..red heads come from Scandinavia and are more common in Scotland than Ireland..traditional Irish features are dark hair and light eyes, red head is a stereotype

  • @irishpeony Nope, we have redheads in Ireland and it's not a stereotype at all. Much of the country was settled by Vikings. I, myself, have the light blue eyes and red hair that have passed down through my Viking ancestors.

  • @eireseeker Only the east coast was settled by the vikings and not in great numbers most irish are iberian celts mixed with germanic normans who all have dark features.

  • @JordoF6 You are incorrect to say that only the east coast of Ireland was settled by Vikings. I live in Limerick City, in the Mid-West region of the Republic, which is a Viking settlement from at least the year 812. King's Island, the part of Limerick City that I live, was the site of a Viking stronghold in the 900's and held power until the coming of the Normans.

  • @JordoF6 I just finished studying it they invaded the east and south east south and maybe a bit of the west i can't really remember but I do know they only settled in the east and south east.

  • @JordoF6 Who gives a fuck? Hitler thought that too, that germanic people were superior and looked what happened to the so called master germans. They got there ass kicked by the russians, a people they said were inferior so stfu

  • @waspdundalk I give a fuck.I am proud of my celtic and norman heritige.Where the hell did i metion racial superiority? i am just telling the lad what ethnic groups make up the modern irish people.

  • @irishpeony Bless, thanks for the info update but you did bypass what I hoped served as humour and irony in my comment.... note to self; must do better. In the pursuit of historical accuracy however, I endorse the Scandiniavian ownnership of the 'redhead' as an invasion/colonial bequest. Vikings anyone!

  • If Ireland ever win the eurovision again, they HAVE to get riverdance to do this again.

  • @Ciano56 i agree!!

  • @Ciano56 oh no we have better this year jedward id say wel probably win it and be even more bankrupt trying to host it

  • Am I the only one or does this somehow remind me oof Mason Williams Classical Gas Guitar piece?

  • god am i proud to be irish :D 5.42 gets me everytime :O :)

  • 79 person have drowned in the river of the dance :D

  • replaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay XD

  • I remember watching this in 1994 and it put the rest of the show to shame. Awesome. I'm not Irish but they are great people.

  • GOD wish i was in that room back then!

  • Never stops being amazing (:

  • at 4:09 can someone plz tell me what instrument they are playing at that act.

  • @movienaut

    Sounds like Uilleann pipes

  • @movienaut I think it's an eastern european instrument called the Gadulka !

  • Gets me every time. Brilliant and so so original.

  • Forget your financial problems Ireland. With This sort of ability and Culture, you'll never be Bankrupt !!

  • @snowhawk58

ah no we still will be!

  • @snowhawk58 A BIG THANKS Snowhawk

  • @snowhawk58 Haha, i wish

  • @snowhawk58 Thank you, we need every good wish :)

  • @snowhawk58 I don't know, my irish dance class was cancelled because of the recession :(

  • @snowhawk58 depends on how much d goverment pay themselves. d irish pm aka taoiseach is paid 350,000 a year d us secretary of state which is probably d hard job in d world is paid 120,000 a year please tell me why .

  • @trevber the Taoiseach is paid less than the €350k you mentioned, they also took a pay cut recently to help with the economy!

  • @terrancy07 the taoiseach ahern, cowne and kenny are all corrupt bastards and don't give afuck about ireland our us the irish people shutup defending them traitor.

  • @JordoF6 I'm not defending anyone!! I was just pointing out they aren't paid €350K!

  • 17 years on and this is still as brilliant as it was back then!! :) I love being Irish :P

  • ah soft day, the Tinker Flatley could do this up a boreen with nothing but a sip of whiskey on him

  • oh my goood :D that was so lame D:D::D

    geeeeeks :D

  • @jydveri your so lame :L

  • oh my goood :D that was so lame D:D::D

  • ok i've just noticed something. jean butler changes her shoes. at the start she is dancing and there is no noise, but when she starts dancing with michael there is a tap sound....i would also add michael is one the nicest guys i've ever met and even had the honour of being in his irish house. i wouldnt begrudge him a thing...legend!

  • @mring007 thats cuz we use two different types of shoes :)

  • @xxshiv69xx

well then i wasnt wrong :)

  • /watch?v=iEShTmikgjw ........Check it Out.... it's called Practicing At Home.... dance

  • 1) Michael Flately must be saying thank you very much to Eurovision for helping to make him a packet!

    2) This is one of the best Eurovision moments EVER!

  • brill. whatched this in my bedoom when i was 14yrs and loved it then

  • I remember watching this and beforehand my Dad had been giving out that it would bankrupt RTE to host it again..After this finished the entire family stood up and clapped solidly for 5 mins..When we won that year,he never said another word...Breathtaking!!

  • thanks for posting - this is a big part of a special time in my lide! x

  • final fantasy 9 (riverdance scene) actually led me here.. wierd huh :P

  • This still gives me tingles! I remember watching it live on TV with my then 10 year old daughter. She had been dancing (Irish) for a couple of years. This really motivated her to keep going and suddenly it was viewed to be 'cool' by her peers too!! Great stuff!

  • Still get the tingles when I watch this video.. remembering how absolutely amazing it was watching it live with my 10 year old daughter! She had been dancing (Irish) for about 2 years and this really inspired her... especially as it suddenly became 'Cool'.

  • this was AMAZING

  • I can remember when i saw this performance on eurovision, still amazes me to this day, so proud that i have irish blood in me.

  • No matter how many times I watch this, every time all the dancers begin to line up and then dance in perfect synchronization, I can not help getting a lump in my throat and a smile on my face and feeling so proud to be Irish

  • I am VERY proud of my Irish heritage!

  • what's the place of this song?

  • I have seen Riverdance three times. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen. I would have died to see the original cast with all the dancer. The version i saw the simplified one.

  • This brings a tear to my eye. God Bless Ireland xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • its good 2 be irish :D.... for such a small counrty we kick alot of ass :) and we are everywhere .. cause where ever you go der are always irish near :)
