  • lord what shit singing, it s really bad, i think. worked the crowd nice tho

  • Why is the other "like" button upside down?

  • With all the respect i have for American folk music,Pete Seeger was musically narrow minded.I saw in a documentary about Bob Dylan that Pete tried to cut the plug-in cable when Dylan started playing folk songs in electric in a festival.Dylan introduced me to American folk music.

  • @Guydreamr, I like your sentiment, but I think you don't quite get it. If it were not for the white folksingers of th 1950's & 60's a lot of the most important folk, labor and anti-slavery songs would have been lost.

  • Only 48 persons are in Tea Party!! Suckers!!

  • I like the simple fact Pete Seager was/is a communist and not everyone hated him for it. was a rebel and wasn't imprisoned for speaking freely and had motivation that was his own and was able to gain respect profit and recognition for his personal conviction in a land that has as many flaws as any other but where a fair trial used to be our way before condemning a people or a movement.

Pete Seager showed why America works despite the bigots and the powerful political allies of corruption.

  • One has to notice all the comments of communism &Cuba.Get the FACTS straight people. The US Feds, CIA, etc are sent in to blackmail & CAUSE chaos in ALL foreign lands to profit corporations & fiat bankers NOT for the people or to quell communism but to rob resources and take control.IF the CIA or NATO etc rebel troops cannot intimidate or assassinate these SOVEREIGN leaders & occupy their land,THEN comes war & bloodshed.Check history, look around you. USA IS the communists, historical fact.

  • .....do ya think a hundred years from now anyone will be they subhuman (which will be a true loss of Liberty, an enslavement, bloodshed & insanity....) or whatever will know anything about this? If we lose our heritage, those who came before us America, or world.....we will lose all.

  • @terrible99 Enjoy your socialist overlords. Because of people like you all we'll have left is change.

  • @amdusrjl Well, our capitalist overlords are keeping the change for themselves. It's not like we actually need the uberwealthy and uberarrogant...we could run the world together as equals without them. It'd be different, we might have fewer meaningless choices(do we really NEED 40 different varieties of vanilla ice cream in the same supermarket)but we'd have more REAL choices(like peace rather than war, and sharing with all rather than hoarding by the few). What we've got now is ugly.

  • The original and ultimate humanitarian

  • i asked some troubadors in mexico to sing this for me... afterwards, they demanded 50 pesos. something must have been lost in the translation.. Pete rallied a nation with his songs.

  • @throbgristle 50 pesos is a pretty tiny amount of money. It's not a betrayal for musicians to expect to make at least a minimal living from their music. I don't think Pete would have a problem with that.

You probably don't realize how desperately poor Mexico has become, especially since "free trade", a system that forced them to give up all the remaining gains of the Mexican Revolution and left nothing in the place of those gains.

  • I born in cuba and this song Is great, good job peter thank you.

  • Sorry folks, but watching white folks sing "Guantanamera" is sorta like watching Pat Boone sing "Ain't That A Shame"

  • @guydreamr I loved your analogy, you made me smile out loud at the Pat Boone reference

  • One of the highlights of American music although his spanish sounds absolutely awful! And is he still alive? I couldn't find any information about that.

  • I agree that he was a great man, and patriot, but mentioning his American Heroism during this spanish song, so simple and elegant, but inappropriate.

  • could anyone write down the song's translation? such songs always have beautiful meaningful lyrics.. i would greatly appreciate it..

    thanks in advance

  • The translation that youtube has in spanish is just terrible.

  • I remember first hearing this song in instrumental form as a very young child, and being struck by the beauty of it's melody.Later I learned the profundity of it's meaning and the circumstances of it's creation which made me love it all the more. Thanks Pete and thanks 2old2rock for the upload

  • Pete Seeger opened my eyes to REAL music that actually meant something. In the 60's I became a broadcaster and proudly played the Master at WTAI in Melbourne, Florida, (screw the "America,-Love-It-Or-Leave-It" gang!) and later at WORJ and WDIZ in Orlando, Florida. Pete Seeger's music will survive us all and it should be cherished as a true chord in the American heart. --Steve Mack

  • He is far overdue for the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Pass it on.

  • @CharlesMcGlade Amen to that. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more.

  • He's the real deal. If half of the human race had one tenth of his compassion this world would be a much better place.

  • How can you not love pete seeger? I run into him all the time and he always leaves and impression on me. He is always positive and always has the best of intentions. In my 17 years of walking this earth never have i met such an inspiring individual.

  • Pete Seeger is a beacon of integrity to more than one generation and an international audience. His vision of a human race motivated more by their decency than their narrowness transcends political sectarianism. Viva Pete!

  • love.

  • Well I do not share the same political views as Mr Seeger... but his music is quite great !! although it's hard to like it sometimes if you don't share the same political views !

  • Great Peeter! Your songs, your guitars and banjos, your art, your social concern, your humanity, and your joining the cause of poor and exploited people makes you our admired, hero-singer, for the people of the whole world! I follow you and learn from you, and play your songs since the 1966, when I was 14 years old, and visiting the US with my mom. You will never die for us, people of the world. Thank you from an Italian admirer, son of the Italian anthropologist Carla Bianco.

    Grazie!

  • @adifazio2000: splendido

  • Sheer poetry. The importance of pronunciation diminishes in light of the sincerity and modesty effected by this humblest of all songs.

  • My cello teacher and Pete were Army buddies in WW2 and remained friends all their lives. I wish I had a way to get in touch with Pete to let him know that he passed away. I have original pictures of them together on Saipan. They played and sang together for the wounded soldiers, and received special commendation for it.

  • Cuba was the shit before the US was even a dream. Learn people. Don't be ignorant.

  • @jmjennings59 how so ?

  • @jmjennings59 and USA isnt?

  • @kingjamessolja You need to be dropped off on a deserted island...

  • I believe in mutual respect.

  • it makes me proud that pete seeger sings the song =) great man viva latino america! -)

  • franta a věra, předvedou kouření péra

  • His diction leaves much to be desired, but his effort is admirable and meritorious.

  • Pete Seeger is a true American patriot! Not like those tea party wackos who they say are patriots but, are control by politicians, political commentators, and corporations.

  • @terrible99 The tea party people that I know of are deeply patriotic and understandably concerned about

the direction of our country. They want to bring some sanity back. It's a grassroots movement that embraces a variety of people from all walks of life. They want limited and less expensive govt, as do I. Look into them, you may be surprised.

  • @terrible99 You're ignorant, close minded, and biased. Your claim that the tea party is controlled by politicians, political commentators, and corporations is ABSOLUTELY baseless. I could just as well say that Pete Seeger was and is controlled by these examples you gave, and my claim would have just as much credibility as your own.

I'm amazed at what blind followers people can be.

  • @SteveSbc406 It's been proven that the Tea Party was basically invented by the Koch Brothers. It was never a people's movement...and, in case you haven't noticed, it doesn't exist anymore.

  • @terrible99 it really sucks that durning the McCarthy era he and fellow members of his band (the weavers) were black-listed as communists

  • Pete A National Treasure!

  • "con los pobres de la tierra

    quiero yo mi suerte echar"

    what a wonderful song!

of course the accent is not the greatest, but it's beautiful anyway and at least he knows who wrote the song

  • Is he the composer of this song?

  • @gcamiloc092 sort of. He explains the origin of the song on the Weavers album. He took a fairly decent song about a guy too shy to talk to his girl, fused it with a poem by Marti, and made it his own. Up until he and the rest of the Weavers sang it, it had never existed in the fully combined version you hear here, but he claims it wasn't written by him.

  • Great song. We had to learn this in Spanish class

  • His pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired.

  • @rhd75......

Pete wouldn't approve but fuck you and the gerbil you rode in on ;)

  • @rhd75 deal with it.

  • Lamest crowd ever

  • great song!

  • Still a great socialist.

  • @tellyontellyon Some day, Our Socialist brothers and sisters will prevail!

  • brilliant.thank you pete for teaching me the lyric

  • America..buy everything by this genious & Woody Guthrie if not aware.

  • Just a man and his guitar got an entire audience to sing en Espanol. Nowadays he'd be shit on for being un-American and supporting illegal immigration. Oh Pete where art thou?

  • gracias por el video esta ecxelente saludos desde mexico

  • Una versión distinta, a lo Joan Baez

  • He stops mid song to teach the audience to sing the chorus, What a guy!

  • I remember my trip to Guantanamera bay, they fed us three times a day and we got free dental

  • Pete, absolute "WORDCLASS"

With the best wishes for Your future.

    Thomas from Austria

  • A classic!

  • I keep waiting for Celia Cruz to come out and kiss him and sing with him.

  • His spanish is funny. but it sounds good with that accent

  • NIce Great!

  • MUY BIEN!

  • sweet

  • Thanks for this!

  • @veriablast - ummmm, and what ethnicity do you think johnny cash was?

  • Lady Gaga would NEVER get her audience to sing along like this!

  • Pete Seeger would NEVER dress like a Female Freddy Mercury!

  • Boring receding hairline bloke singing a great spanish song.

  • @1Thompsonmusic

Obvious troll is obvious......"boring receding hairline bloke" is the greatest folk artist and civic actvist in the history of this country. Before you vomit up something like your comment, try doing this moron thing...its called thinking.

  • @Sdeath34

I do apologise for this offensive comment. I was drunk when I typed it. It's one of my favourite songs, and I've never Heard of Peter Seeger, but he is brilliant.

  • @Sdeath34 Greatest civic activist in the history of this country? lol

  • @xSPLENDAx

are you capable of anything but lolling, my fine feathered friend ? This guy, unlike you, was, and Is a man of principle, who challeged the heady conservatism of this country both at home and abroad. He questioned....which is the duty of any patriot, and he refused to accept the "leader of the free world" and "spreader of democracy" ratshit. Not only did he do this himself, but he energized others..so yeah..greatest civic activist in the hist. of this diseased, corrupt country.

  • @Sdeath34 There may not even be a Hudson River if not for Pete. He has action and charisma to make people just have to see things through his eyes and get activated in doing what needed to get done. He'[s is a true American Hero!!!

  • this guitar sounds awesome! forgot what guitars with 12 chords are called lol

  • Help Pete Seeger getting the Nobel peace prize! Join the facebook group "Give Pete Seeger the Nobel Peace Prize".

And spread the words LET a man who deserves the price win it!

  • Magnifique !!

  • I loved this song even before I knew what Guantanera was~

  • A great introduction to the poetry of Jose Marti.

  • effortless

  • This song was played all the time on my holidays!!!

  • w00t! thumbs up if u live in the Hudson Valey!

  • Grande Pete !! He's awsomee !!

  • When I first heard this song when I was younger I kinda learnt Spanish from this song, not that I knew what it was all about. My mum and late dad liked this song..it is truly a beautiful song...

  • OMG, does this bring back memories! Wonderful man, wonderful man, always a teacher. Thanks for this!

  • Just great.....

  • Pete Seeger is still live an` kickin !

  • Just discovered Pete here, what a beautiful way to transcend the musical borders that limit us.

  • scheiß´qualität...............

  • The statue is actually on 59th St. and 6th Ave - not 7th Ave. 6 Ave was renamed Avenue of the Americas, and there are statues of three latin American heros where it meets Central Park.

  • cool

  • Beautiful, and I love his folk songs, but my favorite Pete Seeger songs are UNION songs. Let's hear it for the working men and women of the world.

  • Nothing fills my soul like singing with Pete Seeger!

  • he has lived his life that he choose... Like frank sinatra (with a bit of a change) he is Living it his way... Don't know if he is still singing, he at one time was concerned that his singing was not up to his standards... My feeling is "go for it" you voice is only a small part of your music...

    g

  • Love you Pete ... what a blast :)

  • @LochlanachViking

Hey there. I'm 17 and I've become a huge fan of Pete Seeger. Five months ago I bought my first banjo because of Pete and Issac Brock. If I could have one wish, it would be to meet Mr. Seeger before his time passes. He is a legend.

  • Seeger has never changed. He was blacklisted and reviled, along with Woody Guthrie, but all that happened to him never lessened his passion for fairness. Everyone living in Arizona should watch this video and then hang their heads in shame.

  • Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize

  • If you go to Key West, Florida, on lower Duval Street (the quieter end, by the Straits of Florida) is a hotel called the "La Te Da." There is a balcony on that hotel from which Jose Marti gave his empassioned speeches for a liberated Cuba.

  • I grew up in the Hudson Valley and don't think I ever had to pay to see him. No cause was too big or small for Pete. Of course now I see what an American treasure I took for granted....right in my back yard. I'm just glad he's still doing his thing.

  • great song

  • Comment removed

  • This song is, by virtue, the anthem of the great & wonderful people of Cuba.

  • Thanks for posting, this is great

I also like the sandpipers version of this song

  • He tries to move the audience, but no way, they are just dumb :-((

  • @bolijack Maybe UsA have the best concentration of dumb watchers.... they need more guys like him but it s hard today......

  • Dislexia.

  • Did you hear about the dyslexic, Agnostic with insomnia who laid awake all night wondering if there really is a dog?

  • Mrs. Lys Dexia.

    Elizabeth Dexia

  • ahahahahaha

  • The word is BANNED not BAND. I wish people now days had education enough to speak English correctly.

  • "now a days" is considered vulgar to the preferred "now days". In addition what I said about the level of education was 100% correct by rules of grammar. In fact substituting the two words you suggested would be 100% inaccurate!

  • Comment removed

  • Actually are being schooled in order to rid you of your ignorance. The fact you said that "had educated sufficiently to speak English correctly" is even close to proper proves you are extremely ignorant to the use of the language. Be gone before you prove ever more how absurdly infantile you are acting. I am sorry if I offended you by correcting your boy friend in public!

  • It one went back to 17th/18th century England. They would probabaly understand most US dialects (Certainly East Coast) better than most types of modern British Engish.

English is a fluid language with no rule book.

  • Nowadays I'm too old to care if other people use my preferred grammatical forms as long as they say what they really mean and don't do more than the normal amount of nitpicking.

Singing along with the chorus would be the true 100% correct thing to do. Enjoy the music. Life is good.

  • I wish musical artist nowadays, had the balls like Pete seeger. He was band from every radio station from like 1930's to 1970's. But, he has the balls to still do what he loves, AND HE NEVER SOLD OUT To ANYONE!!!!!!!!!

  • @Ibanezheadz

    right on Kid

  • His diction is better than the average spanish speaking person!

  • I love the song!

  • A person who sings from the heart! Completely genuine. Could almost make you cry.

  • @lazerlazer does make me cry. <3

  • @roofette Thank you for recognizing my post : ).

  • @lazerlazer it doesn't sound so amazing to me.

  • @renatocorsetti Very nostalgic as well. There is a lot that goes into what I wrote so you can't take what I said at face value.

  • Cuba Si,Castro NO! VIVA CUBA LIBRE!

  • yes he is....... so?

  • @MillaHead

    this is a good thing

  • and you are an idiot

  • In any language, this song is beautiful poetry.

  • This is spanish, and as a matter of fact, it is a beautiful, not poem, but story. A story of the simplicity of the rural life in Mexico...

  • @madamewho -- Does a story need not be poetry? I know that it is written in Spanish, but would it make much difference if it were in Mandarin, or Burmese, or even Catalan?

  • I guess its poetry yeah if you want it to be...

  • @madamewho uhhhh not mexico actually, its written by jose marti who was Cuban.

  • This is "ARE" country...I trust you mean "our" country. Biggot.

  • Hahaha, IMBECILE.

  • Pete is one the greatest musicians!

  • No seamos cortos de mente, este hombre por mas que hable mal el español es lo de menos, difundio un tema hermoso y lo hizo cantar por muchos de los que estaban ahi.

  • I love acoutic guitar,

Click my name DivaAnnFisher and listen to my original song:

    I've Got A Smile.

It is a song for our troubled economic times.

If you like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, you will like this.

And yes, I KNOW Pete Seeger!!

  • wow, dawg. that is some angry jive you're spewing.

  • Can someone send me the correct Lyrics?

  • This song is stunning, amazing, beautiful. It reveals the hope and the intentions of Jose Marti.

I think about what Cuba is today: political prisoners, censorship and practically a big golden jail where you can hardly escape from. Is this really was Marti wanted, or perhaps the opposite? Thus, today it should be sung also for freedom from the communist regime.

  • @baco82 does your opinion derives from a visit of yours there or is it just what they informed you the media of your country?

  • Ha ha, lyrics by Jose Marti, traditionnal tune

  • Ha, they really get into it alright... Surprised nobody got hurt...

  • Pete was my dad's music teacher. Wow!

  • Terrific!

  • Unforrtunately I am a White Cuban American. It is a tragic story, having the island convert to communism. I am 14 yrs old, my family was exiled from the island in 1971. :'(
