One of the great songs of the folk singer/songwriter era. Tom Rush does a great version too. I am surprised that nobody in Hollywood has ever used it as a theme song for a movie.
I saw her that year at the DAR hall in DC - probably the most amazing concert of my life. She ended with this song (which was an encore as I recall) the mood was so strong after singing along that no one spoke, no one even applauded. We all filed out in silence, not to break the spell.
One of my favorite acoustic guitar players... with the voice of an angel and the words of a poet. Joni's one of a kind... the antithesis of the plasticine pop stars of today.
Always been one of my favorites - its music like this that makes me feel young and old, at the same time. She brings me back to my youth while reminding me that I'm no longer young (in years anyway).
Beautiful song and performance, thanks for posting.
The first time I heard this song, it had been recorded by Buffy Sainte Marie. It was so beautiful, I checked the notes and found it was written by Joni Mitchell. When Joni recorded it, I brought her album and have been in love with her artistry ever since. What a magnificent artist she is. Every song is a beautiful VanGoh, right Joni? Thanks, Joni. It's all beautiful.
I first heard Joni on KMPX, San Francisco (berkeley for me) in late '66, and was immediately in love. Her poetry, her voice, her guitar playing, simply astonishing. We're fortunate to have lived in her time. We'll not see her like, ever again.
Jonis Beautiful-this song never fails 2get 2me- the lyrics are so true when you listen properly- Makes me well up Everytime!!! (like now) . It was used to good effect on The Wonder Years- Great Album,Great Song, Great performance... "Someone told me theres a girl out there, with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair" LedZeppelin- Goin to California.
I remember being at this concert. Would always go to see her whenever she sang at the Schaefer outdoor concerts in the park, too. She was great no matter what the venue
I first heard it in 1972 at a High School Assembly (Grade 12). I looked over and there was my Elementary School sweetheart whom I hadn't seen for 4 years. Life is like that.
love this song...first time i heard it i was half asleep by a campfire...my aunt was playing it on a gutiar...loved it then love it now always will always have... <3 :)
The first time I heard this song was at my summer camp. I later learned it was a Joni Mitchell song the girls were singing, and that she'd written it as a response to Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain"
I tried to post the Wikipedia link for "Sugar Mountain" but youtube denied me. The article seems to indicate Neil's song came first. It also provides dates each was written, I believe.
The story I heard was that Neil was bummed out by the fact that he couldn't go to a youth centre in Winnipeg after he turned 20 and so he wrote Sugar Mountain. Joni Mitchell wrote this song to try to teach him that growing older was ok too.
I sung this for fifth grade graduation. All of the graduating fifth graders had to sing it. We also sang it for caberet. Its such an adorable song. I love it
wasn't this also part of the need for her to win a green card in defining her as not just a musician that could take other American musicans job, but as someone unique and deserving of the accolade of performing at Carnegie Hall. Didn't they do the same for Neil Young at the Performing Arts Center in L.A/? I was in England at the time, but an American exchange student told me this. Was it balls?
That taking another musicians job stuff worked both ways. In the early 70s I had to pay travel dues to the Toronto musicians union 4 the same reason. & it was not cheap! Also, when crossing the border into Canada, we had to register the serial numbers of all our instruments & equipment with Canadian Customs and it had to match all back up when we left Canada. So, it didnt matter which way U were traveling or who U were. But I LOVED being in Canada & have many good memories of Toronto.
Where is Joni? The world needs more of her music! I saw her sing in a small cafe in Toronto years ago. She really moved me and I knew someday she would be famous. Joni, please come back to us!
"It won't be long now till you drag your feet to slow the circles down..." What a line. What a song. What a singer. What a woman.
