@akgbassguitarkid Billy's an awesome bassist that I love as much as Mike. Both of 'em can bring it, no doubt about it. Billy's jammed with Mike over the years and said that the man can play! I think Mike does solos like these just to have fun with sound and cut loose and keep things crazy, loose and fun. It supposed to be a rock concert not a night at the Symphony. :-) ROCK!
Well, certainly Michael is not be best bassist at soloing, but his grooving is pretty good. Listen to Hot For Teacher or Loss or Control, his lines are flawless, with great speed and even melody. Van Halen brothers are musically well trained and very talented, they would not hire a poor musician to perform with them.
By the way, I could say the same of Roth, he is far from being a technically great singer -he's great for Rock & Roll, though-.
