  • uhm, "bums" are people too

  • a bum who's going to get up and scare them?!?

  • Please help my 7month old scottiepoo jumps up & barks at moving cars when out on his walk! i need to stop this as its dangerous! please tell me what i should do to stop it!

  • Wow. Does your dog ever eat from a bowl. He gets so many treats he's prolly always stuffed!

  • i wish i could have a puppy :( but what do I do when I go to college?

  • i wish i could have a puppy :(

  • do you have a video on teaching a dog "check it out"? it would be veeeeerrryyy helpful!

    thanks!

  • this is pretty helpful... I have a 7 month old Border Collie that barks all the time. I'm gonna try these techniques and hope it works... at least a little. Thanks for posting the video.

  • que raza es tu perro grande?

what breed is your big dog?

  • @claudiapau21 border collie

  • @claudiapau21 border collie jeje yo tengo un golden

  • This really worked! In just a few days of working on this we were able to see great progress. It's really helped to build our little dog's confidence. Not only does he know what do when he's spooked, he's getting better at staying calm in new situations. Thanks again!

  • Anyhow, any and all help you can come up with will be greatly appreciated, I've tried nearly everything bar a barking-collar now, and I really don't want to electrocute my dog because she's expressing herself. :/

    Thanks alot in advance.

    /Mats

  • So, I realize that it might be easier with my friends because ofcourse, my mind set is more at ease with my own friends, and a bit more reserved with complete strangers (unless they have a friendly looking dog with em.)

And I'm aware that my state of mind will be portrayed to some degree in the dog. However, I also want her to realise that I'm the alpha male, if something is incorrect, I will deal with it, she shouldn't "protect" me unless I really need it, get what I'm trying to say?

  • And to continue, barking at strangers, especially males in dark clothing. Now, my dog is a German Shepherd and a British Foxhound mix (about 75/25), so she's got quite strong guard instincts. I'm constantly introducing her to new people, luckily, I got quite a large circle of friends, and that's... usually fine. I use positive reinforcement when she's not barking, and calling her to me when she is. And I use the command "go greet" when I want her to say hello.

    to be continued...

  • I got an inquiry as a follow up to these 2 episodes, my dog has seased with barking towards inanimate objects, just as you taught yours, I taught her to check it out, positively reinforcing when she dared to get closer to the object.

However, two issues remain, strangers (especially males in dark clothing) and being left outside of a store.

The issue is, if I leave her alone, she barks, but if I leave someone with her, she doesn't. So, how can I positively reinforce when I can't be next to her?

  • Wow, this is really amazing! I just I had seen it awhile ago, or it had been posted a couple years ago. My dog, Which is a Chiuahaha; Jittery and jumpy. She learned that we let her bark at things outside. and she won't learn now that she's set in her way...

  • 1st of all she have very good legs 2nd its not right 2 over feed dog when training like this u must do it only when u want 2 plz him and after he do what u want from him .

  • maybe a vid on how to train a dog not to bark while playing with other dogs??? i have a fox terrier and shes driving me crazy with the barking, but she only barks when playing with my other dogs

  • my dog does not bark at all.. how to resolve this problem????email if please.. giannix@live.com.. thanks!

  • "Nobody builds their confidence by being pushed into any situation" - I take it you disagree with the Dog Whisperer's ideas then?

I agree that forcing animals into doing what you want them to do, rises their anxiety, even if it seems to work right away.

THanks for your positive training methods!

  • For the treats, do you use human cheese? Or is there special cheese for dogs?

  • If you move something away for awhile then put it back out

would they still be ok with the item or start barking at it again?

  • im not trying to say wht u are doing is wrong but all i wanna say is the dog is mostly doin what u say because of the food :D but i surpose if it work for u then great :) nice vids apart from that .

  • kikopup, I go to a stable. recently a golden retriever mmix has showed up. she is very friendly, and she could be a very good ranch dog. only 1 problem SHE WON"T STOP BARKING AT HORSES

  • i hope this helps for my chihuahua! he is scared of mops and brooms! XD lol

  • I can't wait for your next episode. Our Bichon Frisé Lily often goes into blind panic when seeing other dogs (not all dogs though, strangely enough) or people walking past the house. She will bark like crazy and forget anything around her, including me. I'm not sure what to do.

She's also an extremely problematic eater, so finding a training treat that actually gets her excited is proving to be very difficult. But I'm not giving up just yet :)

  • Haha! yes!

  • Your job it's amazing! All my respect for you.

  • Wow, great video! Thanks for sharing!

  • ...i'm also really looking forward to your next barking video, as i've been struggling with that for several months (my dog is obviously in a fear period), and while it's been getting better it's not over yet. : (

  • If you think your dog is in a fear period, better to just take at a minimum a 8 day vacation- sometimes dogs can sensitize to things rather than habituate to them when they are in a fear period. Also if a dog reacts drastically to something, it might take 8 days for the stress hormones in the blood to reduce making them more likely to go backwards in training when than forwards, so its good to take a break.

  • fantastic video, thank you. my dog has this problem also, and what i've been doing is encouraging my dog to take a treat near the object, to sniff it. basically your method without the cue to check it out. i'm excited to try this out, though, especially with halloween coming up. : d

  • Awesome Job Kiko ! Have you ever thought of being a dog trainer by employ ? I bet you'd be awesome at it ! =) That is if your not already hehe =D Thanks for uploading.

  • Nice job as always. Episode 3 is the one I need since Kharma barks at people with the wrong outline (embarassing when it's little old ladies with walkers).

  • I will! I promise! Lots of dogs bark at people with the 'wrong outline' - i love the way you said that! Splash barks at people with the wrong out line. Its normal dog behavior- a lot of trainers and owners now tend to freak out and over react about it. Dogs are dogs and they are great at spotting things out of the ordinary, and tell us about it. All we have to do is teach them slowly with pos reinforcement.

  • This is so helpful, as always. Thank you!

  • Thanks L!

  • my dog sees the pumpkin outside and starts barking.

  • Emily, your videos are a huge help. Thank you for uploading this!!

  • can anyone link me a good video on a NICE way to teach my dog to crawl ?

  • zsianz1 has a crawling tutorial on her channel!

  • Well done. LOL, bums.

  • For a lot of dogs I just use the treat as the marker when a dog is looking at another dog- pure pavlovian conditioning, dog is looking at the other dog- bam- the treat is into his mouth. You have to be VERY careful with this technique though, the dog has to SEE the scary thing AS the predictor of rein. otherwise, dog sees scary dog, then they see your hand move, you are not counter-conditioning the dog to scary dogs as much as you are conditioning your dog to like seeing your hand move.

  • Another winner Emily. Looking forward to the next one - as that's the issue Milo has - scary people!

  • great Emily...fantastic

  • SO excited to see episode 3! I need that tip REEEEal bad! great videos btw!!!

  • Hi Emily,

I am a trainer and behaviourist in UK, I do clicker training and have been for 10 years. Can you tell me where the barking at people and dogs video is.

I loved 'go check it out'. I woulduse the methods youdo with the washing machine.

I have a difficult fear aggressive Collie coming at the moment that is barking and lungine, I would normally do click etc but this one is deaf. I have trained several deaf dogs, using 'thumbs up' but have never had one that isbarking and lunging as well

  • hi and how are you doing but i have one question what do you give your dog as a treat ?

  • i think it is sumpin like meat chunks?

  • yes, mainly 'meat chunks' however you want to use the treat that your dog finds the most amazing.

Also you want to use tiny treats, so they are just pieces of information and aren't going to make your dog full .

  • great video, thanks for all your tips!!!

  • cancel that question - just got to the end of the vid. Won't try it with pple!! Look forward to the next video.

  • Hey emily - this is great. would this work with barking at pple too? my dog tends to bark at pple who catch him off guard by appearing when he doesn't expect it or if they are carrying something unusual.

  • Really good that you focus on positive training instead of negative training!

  • I send these vids to my relatives that got a new puppy recently, they find them really usefull.

  • Excellent video and wonderful information! Thanks!

  • great vid!! Hoping you can do one on how to get my dog not to jump on other people, he knows not to do it to me but always does it to others as he gets excited

  • excited to see the next vid. we need it BAD!!!!!!!!

  • really wonderful video again. I'm working on barking a lot at the moment so I'm really enjoying your videos on the subject :-) Wow, Splash is so lovely, she is such a sweetheart :-)

  • Another great video, Emily. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your skills. :-) 5*

  • Hey Emily i wanna ask u why do my dog alwaysbite an object? My dad said its still

young it needs to bite thing for a year . My dog is a coocker spaniel. is it ture wat my dad said?

  • Hi!!! when Sweet was a puppie, she used to bark to scary objects, I tauch her the comand "touch" with normal things, and when we meet somethins scaring, I ask her "touch" and she forgets the problem and is able to think and work and don´t feel scared. Now she is adult girl and is perfect with new things :))))

    Good video!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That is awesome!

  • Great video, thanks for your devotion to helping the rest of us with problem areas! Hope you are in overtime working on the next installment video, we need it badly! LOL Can't wait to see it.

  • Splash is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Thanks! I think she knows it.

  • THank you! looking forward to the video to teach dog not to bark at the strangers...

  • great video keep it up and thank you

  • Love it!

I had to use this with a motion sensitive, animated, life-sized witch that cackled and talked as we went by! It spooked ME when it started moving, and Dazzle about wet himself. We did a lot of work going up behind it so it wouldn't start moving. Once he was good with that, I took him in front, but as far away as I could get while someone else triggered it. I did some classical conditioning, but by then he was ready to take a closer look even with it moving and making noise.

  • Gosh, I dont know if Splash is ready for a cackling witch!

  • Great vid! :)

    - Amanda & Tasha

  • Super fantastic video, from a super fantastic trainer!! Splash! is so cute when she stands on her hind legs to check out the orange hanging bag =o) Definately a game I am going to start playing with Jesse. 5* ~Heather and Jesse~

  • Hey Em, great video! VERY useful information, so happy you are doing a series! Thank you. - T

  • Nice way to let a dog just sniff and get information, just like Turid would have suggested! Nice video!

  • Thanks, looking forward to the next video in the series..

  • omg I taught my dog leave it because of you. Thanks!

  • Hm, i wonder if this would work for vacuum cleaners. hehe

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  • Very nice! I love Splash ^_^
