  • As nice as jazz is and I appreciate jazz as much as any other genre I was looking more for a neo classical metal version of this lesson but thanks anyway

  • i wish i understood him

  • can i get a high distortion and overdrive using pedals in a very low bedroom volume????

  • @tukun3104 you can if you get a low watt practice amp like a line 6 spider IV

  • MAKE MORE VIDEOS ANDREW!!!!

  • What scale is the original 'greensleves'?.To my ears it uses a minor scale, but with a natural sixth(not the flattened sixth of later versions) , a flattened seventh and a natural seventh at various times in the melody.

    Thanks

  • thenx u realy helped me,,,,,

i know the "ahva raba" (the jewish scale

and i now see that it's just a mode of the

    The Harmonic Minor Scal

  • Please recommend me any guitarist or band that is very notorious the way he uses this stuff

    thanks

  • I like how you use the correct fingering and terms. Some of these teachers kinda sound like they know what there talking about, but they don't. I appreciate it.

  • that's cool..!

  • thats because the minor harmonic is more of a metal scale than anything,u can use it for jazz however it is mostly used in metal

  • The opening song is what God sounds.

  • I have also found that 1, 2, b3, b5, 5, #5, 7 sounds even more exotic and middle eastern. Is this still a harmonic minor scale? If so, am I using one of the modes?

  • @DudeWheresMyDeLorean That particular scale is called the "Hungarian Minor" scale. It's 1 - 2 - b3 - #4 - 5 - b6 - 7. It's the Harmonic Minor scale with an augmented fourth, and it has its own set of modes.

  • Fantastic as always, thank you so much Andrew!

  • @dogstar1967

Yeah man it helps, it all depends on what you want to do but, like for example if your just playing rock you wouldn't normally hear all these sorts of chords and scales, you'd probably most of the time use major and minor chords but it's good to know all this sorta stuff cause then you wouldn't be restricted to say just basic sounding stuff you know what I mean?

  • is it really nessesary to learn all these fancy scales just to be a decent guitar player?

  • these scales any fancy, its the real deal

  • @dogstar1967

I don't use scales much. At least, I haven't experimented much with scales in the past. But now that I've been fiddling around with a lot of Flamenco styles and Middle-Eastern styles, it's starting to become more and more important to learn these fancy scales. It depends on what you want to do. If you want to just play chords, that's cool. A lot of guitarist just do that, which is fine. But when you've done that for a few years, you start playing around with scales and modes.

  • i could use some help. i have been playing for a little over two years and i love playing guitar. i do however have a very difficult time actually learning MUSIC and how to actually move around the neck and use the scales. i learn the shapes of the scales very quickly and the ones in this lesson are probably my favorite i have and learned so far.

i would really appreciate any advice you could give on helping me understand how to actually be able to move up and down the neck and learning MUSIC

  • I like how when he talked about that mM7 he literally played the stairway to heaven intro chords exactly. Coooool :-D

  • i dont think im smart enough to understand the theory could u just give some shapes to memorize cuz id better off like thta for now

u explain theory well but u should give the diagrams/tabs too not everyone has an easy time understanding theory

  • i dont think im smart enough to understand the theory could u just give some shapes to memorize cuz id better off like thta for now

  • Very helpful.. Very direct to the point.. thanks for helping us..

  • i was waiting for the automated voice to say "and here are your local on the 8's"

    Hello,

Those are the Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in the Bridge position & a Seymour Duncan Cool Rail in the neck position. I'm playing through a Peavey Bandit 112.

    Thanks for Watching,

    Andrew Wasson

  • i really love ur lessons, and By the way, i think u look like Tony Shaloub from Monk

  • i have to audition at humber college ontario canada for jazz guitar...and i was never taught this scale before...thank you for teaching me this scale it was a lot of help :)

  • @Demon19233 my dad works there!! good luck!

  • Is that a dragonfire screamer pickup at the neck?

  • I was wondering you could do a chord analysis of Julie London's Cry me a River. I love the chords in that song, and it sounds kinda like the stuff you were playing in this video. Just a thought. Thanks

  • did it sound like the guitar was talking at the beginning?

  • I'm pretty sure my head exploded.

  • Great explanation Andrew on a very complicated area. Particularly on the chords section. guitanorak

  • i love the weather channel music in the beginning

  • these scales have been invented by a persian king in the 1200 bc who was devoted to music, fancy ladies nd was opium addicted nd was overweight but part genious part insane died after a party in the morning for a tuna sandwich ::: i read it in a book

  • aaaaaaaaand, subscribed. In a word; awesome.

  • GR-20?

  • Andrew you really look like a person who is devoted to music with his whole life!

Thank you for these great videos and everything they really help out.

    Greetings from Finland. =D

  • thx, that was very informative.

  • the harmonic minor sound very arabic

  • @zohritube rather hispanic, but since the hispanic culture was strongly influenced by the arabic than maybe you are right...

  • this is exactly what i needed to understand thanks man

  • this is exactly what i needed to understand

  • i love that solo at the beggining!

  • Andrew the first chord you play when your demonstrating the CM7#5 I notice it does not contain a Major seven, is this not truely a C7M9#5? Just wondering maybe I'm seeing it wrong. I love your videos, I just dig deep into these Vids as I get deeper into learning.

  • Hey is that a Mo Joe pickup from dimarzio there?

  • You know.. Even though my understanding of music theory and chord construction is limited., I couldn't help but be completely immersed in your videos. Not understanding even half of what you were talking about has motivated me to learn these things. Thanks from New Zealand!

  • Can you record and upload a version for dummies?

  • okay if you learn all these scales.. how do you know how to play them and improvise on guitar if its in drop B? or ect ect..

  • @kevNchris445

Theres a dirty 8 letter word that discourages a lot of people from wanting to learn called "practice." The only way to become good at that stuff is to push yourself in new techniques in your tuning (drop B in your case drop A/ standard B in mine.) and being able to recognize every note on your fretboard. Im not being sarcastic. Seriously, in a few years, all this stuff will become natural to you. ;) Hope this helps.

  • _____

    MUSE

    --------

  • This is my favorite scale and I've always needed some info on how to use it, so thank you very much for this tutorial! No offense. You look like Paul Gilbert, if he ate food. I'm not calling you fat, I'm calling you healthy :)

  • Great melodic ideas if that piece at the start is improvised

  • first ofa ll superb lesson that goes for all your lessons anyways i have a question i thought the major scale is the only scale that had chords built into it liek harmonizing it in triads can the harmonic minor be harmonized 2 if so can the regular minor be harmonized and what about the modes plz elaboarat eon this im super confused

  • thanks alot andrew you helped me alot thanks again =)

  • 14:12 laid to rest?

  • @Velixo haha i know exactly what your talkin about man learned that song in 8th grade

  • @ epiphonegear its not compulsory that all the chords should have the same notes as the scale being played !! try playing e minor blues scale with chords e maj and g maj !!

  • @fawdian G Major progression? E is the natural minor mode of G Major, hence he'd be playing an E Minor Pentatonic with a flat 5th in the key of E Minor. I don't understand how that was supposed to help. Thanks anyways genius

  • Some of those chords seem odd. I'll get back to you. But you seem to be playing chords with notes out side the harmonic minor scale.

  • Does anyone know how he plays that Cmaj7#5? I know a few variations and positions myself but I like the position and sound of his.

  • Hello there sir andrew :D can you answer my simple question i been playing guitar for 7 year now i think and im 16 and i still get confuse about minor and major chords please answer my question :D

  • I'd like to Thank You for all these wonderful lessons, They've help me alot, but i was wondering if you could teach some of the following, Augmented scales and chords , Octave displacement, or Scalpel or Sarod picking,

  • Andrew, a fantastic lesson with of course very valuable info, you didn't lose me on the heavy explanation, interesting was the Dm7b5 as an option for Dm7 because both G# and A are inside the key. You're a good teacher and good musician. I did two Video's about Blues-vamps,I invite you to take a look and maybe give some feedback on the offered Ideas, would appreciate that, friendly greetings Victor.

  • Reply to: shredguitarman430...

I have upgraded to, "Sony Vegas 9.0 Pro." (from Vegas 8.0 Pro).

The rendering settings are a little different.

I've started rendering to MP4 (the .mov file).

It's a little larger file, but better audio & video.

    Thanks for watching!

    - Andrew

  • amazin lesson.. got lost slightly on the deep theory at the end but a real eye openner to a scale i had previously discarded cuz i didnt kno how to apply it...

  • hello

a little note: if you play a harmonic minor by stratting from its 5th degree you would play 'Hicaz Mode' which is the most used Turkish music mode among nearly 600 modes of Turkish Music.

Like A harmonic minor has G# if you play it from E and you have a backtrack in the key of E you'd apply Hicaz.

Look at the "Home' of Dream Theater they used "Hicaz Makamı" -"Hicaz Mode"

  • @edominant7add9: very cool comment! thx

    Lesson was great too, Andrew.

  • @edominant7add9 Dream Theater, good choice.

  • @edominant7add9

AKA Phrygian Dominant or Phrygian Major, it's a phrygian with a sharpened (major) third.
