  • increible !!!!! o.O, this not "AUTISM" this is MUSIC

  • Best Jazz Ive heard since zappa

  • Matt held a concert in my hometown. I got to talk to him afterwards and he was very nice.

  • At 2:09 it appear like he is playing 2 instruments. haha.

  • jeez he can play!

  • So talented! He wrote it! And played so so well!

  • Snazzy jazzy stuff.

  • amo a ese muchacho

  • Hey everyone! You can find later videos of me at my new channel "mattsavagejazz." I was 12 in this video; I'm 18 now.

  • People are saying he has a disorder, yet he has most likely achieved much more than they ever will.

  • Mozart's back, this time as a jazzman.

  • Matt ... you rule... you have such a stage presence and sense of humor... I can't believe how young you were when you performed this!!

  • disorder????....I THINK EVERITHING IN HIS MIND AND SOUL ARE IN PERFECT ORDER!!!!

  • Matt Savage is my favorite autistic person =)

  • brilhante

    aeeeee é fodasssso

  • It's you... haha!

  • in 2:08 it looks like he is playing the other instrument with his left hand :D

  • haha thought so too at the first look :)

  • xD his lil feet didn't even touch the floor when he was playing this. gods, this kid is amazing.

  • Cuando yo sea grande quiero tocar como él! Jaja....

  • cute intro! Absolute brilliance!

  • Thanks for all the compliments!

  • haha im reading about him in my psycholgy book for homework and i figured id youtube search him insane!

  • hahaha!

    holy sh*t, same here!

    the myers ap psych book?

  • I see him on Discovery Channel Brazil just a some minutes ago... Is Brilliant, like a young version of Thelonious Monk..

  • such amazing jazz. I knew about him on Discovery Channel, gee the guy is a genious, keep it up!

  • He is like a Jazz version of Mozart

  • cool!!!

  • This kid is awesome.

  • jesus christ!

  • genius!

  • Matt you are the greatest

  • METAL IS FOREVER MATT

  • Haha! Funny.

  • he's an official savant

  • if the quarter note is the main beat then the entire piece cant be in 4/4. the melody is 6/8 over 4 but the swung quarter note section is in 8/8 or 4/4 with a metric modulation, beginning on an up beat starting on the and of the last beat of the 6/8....i think

  • Close! :)

It's in 4/4, in AABA form. The A section consists of six measures of 3/4 (close to 6/8, I guess) hemiola over 4/4, followed by two measures of 4/4.

The bridge is straight 4/4. Hope this helps!

    Matt

  • wow!

  • what is the meter of this piece? does anyone know?

  • It's 4/4 with 6/8 over it. Or you may think like this. He played 3/4 2 bars over 4/4 1 bar.

    That's called "Hemiola"

  • Yea I think thats what it is... thats the most common form of it anyways. Listen to the drums on Honor Thy Father by Dream Theater

  • The whole thing is in 4/4. The form is AABA, 8 bars for each section, where the A's have the first 6 bars of 4 grouped in threes(or, if you like, the A's are 8 bars of 3 plus 2 bars of 4). But the quarter note is always the beat. There is no 6/8 or 2 against 3 business going on.

  • Jonathan8506 is correct. Hope this helps!

    Matt

    Bravo!!!

  • that is so awesome

  • Matt - harness your anger. Put it into your music. You will break through boundaries you did not know existed. I know you have it within you. Let it free.

  • what possesses you to write such shite?

  • well, considering other comments ive seen cho817 make,

    probably LSD ._.

  • I am sorry.

He is a genious but not musically.

You cant get this ability by something what is in fact a brain damage.

It is something consisting of and based on feelings. Music is communication! People with asbergers are sometimes hardly able to communicate and integrate in social groups. A jazz trio is a social group!!

  • I just don't understand how you can say this kid is not a musical genious...he's like what 10?

  • it's spelled GENIUS, genious.

  • he's brilliant!

  • You can see recent performances by Matt (on Youtube) with Al Stewart and on the Letterman Show. Matt has made an astounding journey to overcome his diagnosis such that you might not know he has PDD. Unless you have someone in your family with a challenge such as Matt's, I could see how you might think autism traits "annoying". But seeing a child early in his life show such obvious signs of autism and later show maturity and poise is equally as amazing as hearing his piano skills.

  • Why do you say he's annoying? His voice has the typical high-pitched "sing-song" speaking voice of a child with PDD (Pervasive Development Disorder). And he speaks "oddly." And, yes, he walks on his tiptoes, spins in circles and shows many of the "classic" signs of someone with autism. Is that annoying?

I see a child with joy on his face and in his heart, a love of music, and happiness to be alive. I do agree with you, however, that he's an awesome musician.

  • its also quite common in children that suffer frum hyperplexia, lol. the voice thing, that is.

  • You think that's a high voice? Get my early live album "All Jazzed Up", recorded when I was nine, and you'll really know what a high voice sounds like.

  • Man, this guy is annoying. But he's an awesome musician.

  • yes he actually is a "prodigious savant"

  • according to wikipedia he has pervasive development disorder..which is a form of autism..plus he taught himself to read music and partly to play the piano

  • Ia he really autistic? I dont think so! Hes just rily a normal very gifted kid.

  • He is autistic.

  • Autistic and Savant if i remember right.

  • man, this kid's AWESOME!

  • its not aspergers, its autism. look it up.

  • Autism IS a form of Asperger's.

  • Aspergers's is an autism spectrum disorder.

  • yes!

  • Asperger Autism is a form of Autism. Well im a "special trainer" for autistic persons, and Asperger is definetly a form of autism. I think Matt Savage is a high function autistic person. Except for the fact that he talks to his fans, that's more like asperger. Can't really tell because i don't know him.

  • @Sanitoeter666 Thank you, I'm an Aspergerian and I just had to put down some idiot who said "well you're not really autistics because your DSM-IV code is .8 away from autism". I think people(especially parents) just want an excuse to turn all autistics into victims, so they have an excuse to cure autism. It's a shame we cant have a restraining order that keeps these people away from all autistics.

  • its not frikken fair.

  • wonderfull

  • Autism Rules! ! !

  • Asperger syndrome

The disorder affects people in various ways, Some positive characteristics include things such as enhanced mental focus, excellent memory abilities, superior spatial skills, and an intuitive understanding of logical systems. These characteristics can often lead to fulfilling careers in mathematics, engineering, the sciences, music, art, or language.

  • wow this guy is really good,i'm a local from aruba, and he will be performing here this month,i'll be there for sheezaweeza.i'm interrested in studying jazz so maybe i can learn something from this kid.awesome!

  • Ha!! Oh my.... I've been playing piano now for 35 years and just discovered Matt TODAY looking through CDs at some record store. Are you SURE he didn't make a deal with anyone at a crossroads? Someone suspect? He's a true inspiration. AMAZING.

  • fantastic, great talent, gifted by god!

  • Good job on Conan, Matt!

  • Alright, I know, I am a "punk rocker", but I have to say, I am thouroughly impressed with this young man and his wonderful music. Simply (figuratively speaking) incredible! It is chaotic beauty. No words can describe it. Thank you for the wonderful video.

  • Thank you for your kind comments. Matt is my son. Check out his other videos from the Kennedy Center and Birdland, they are more recent.

  • Will do! You have an extraordinary son. It takes people 20 years or more to learn the things he composes. Amazing. I do hope he becomes more famous than Beethoven, Mozart, etc Take care.

  • Hey, did you know your son is in my Psychology book (Psychology Eighth Edition by David G Myers)? He's in the chapter under Intelligence. :)

  • I didn't know that but that's really cool. Thanks for posting that.

  • that's actually why i looked him up on youtube, because he was in Psychology book!

  • I looked him up because he's in my Psychology book too. Same one.

  • The one by David Meyers? page 311? me too!

  • haha, thats hilarious, I came to this for the same reason!

  • I have friend that shared Matt's videos with, and said he has seen this before with his cousin in the late 50's and early 60's . My friend's last name is Mays his cousin is Lyle Mays. I wonder if you had the same problem the Mays had, when he played the family organ people just showed up and listened. My friend just smiled the whole time he watched these. I hope he been able to meet Lyle Mays, great guy.

  • What a treat to finally see the brother live, even if it is slightly outta date!!! Matt and Trio are one of the hottest things going in Jazz these days; mark your calendar for 09.19.06 when the new disc "Quantum Leap" [and a re-issue of the latest disc] hits the shelf. If you are new to MST then head over to savagerecords.com and check out the brand spankin' new design & order a disc or two - Trust Me.

    Hi GrassFarmer!

  • Matt is one of today's most talented jazz musicians. He's a prodigy in the same class as Mozart.

  • Hold on there buddy. This kid is great. But, in the same class as Mozart? Come on!

  • I have watched Matt grow as a musician and he has so much to give our world. My word what a joy to watch him go!!!!!!

  • This kid is Awesome! The video was recorded in 2004 when he was just 12 years old. Check out his web site at: www.savagerecords.com for more info about him and more music.
