At first, it does tend to hurt, especially if you don't whet your throat properly. But the more you practice, the more resilient your vocal chords become. When I first started it felt like I was developing laryngitis every time I sang for more than a few minutes at a time. But these days I can do it for hours without adverse effects. Practice, as they say, makes perfect.

This is a wonderful explanation. Thankyou so much. You have given an excellent explanation. From this it is easy to see the Larynx disenguages to the vertical throat muscles as it drops from the upper octave to the lower octave. In this there is no use of the vocal cords. Kind of amazing really. Just be patient and get used to enguaging a completely different set of muscles that have never been used before accept in the abrupt action of a cough.
I was excited that I finally made the sound yesterday, and today. However, it only lasted like five seconds and then the "sound" went back up my throat and it sounded like regular singing again. It's so hard to keep it down (I don't know how to describe that in words, but I assume you know what I'm talking about). I guess it will stay there longer in time? I'm a woman, so perhaps things are a little different too.
@Finntroll17 to be honoust i've never heard a female throatsinging! so i am very exited about what you make out of it ;) i guess it should not be such a big problem for female throats, once you got the right technique. the pitch could maybe sound a bit higher..but i am not sure of that one. please show me the results! try it every day, doesnt matter if it's 3 seconds...tomorrow it will be 4 seconds and next week 6 seconds :)
This was a wonderful demonstration. I picked up a lot that I didn't know through this technique. Can you describe exactly what kind of muscle movement this is? I can feel it when I hit it but, not knowing which one should move is causing me to slip in and out of kargyraa
@howdyjesus Good to hear this was useful to you! Its hard to describe to find 'the' muscle to use, but it should be in the front of your neck, just a bit below the adams' apple. But using this muscle wont let you be able to instant do kargyraa as the pressure to make to tone have to come deep from out of your chest. This will sound ridiculous, but by making the 'bear-growls' its easiest way to discover the muscle! Take care and good luck bro.
I had a workshop to learn it. (for 2 Days, and i was the only one who opened the path in my throat, there were other 30 people that failed) So, you have to be patient with your voice, don't force it to much! My technik was like, close your mouth and start to hum the letter M (mmmmmmmm...ect.). When you've done it many times, start to clear your throat!!! If you train enough, you'll definetly hear, when your voice is opening for the Kargyraa. ;)
OK, I'm quite sure you're Dutch, but if not, please say, then I'm going to repeat my comment in English. :p
patience is the answer. the three seconds you get the kargyraa sound now, are three seconds more than your ability to make the correct sound the day before yesterday.
i've been trying for a day but what i thought i do is push the air out and strain my throat to attempt to get the right sound, but i'm pretty sure that's wrong. could you direct me?
hi dude, try not to make your throat-opening smaller then normal. (keep it the same as when you are singing normally).
please try to imitate the bear sound as I showed in the video, by doing that you will discover what part of the throat should be vibrating next to your singing voice. kargyraa is the combination of normal singing voice and the extra vibration!
what you're saying is totally right! specially in the beginning the hardest part is to seek for the right and optimal technique.
with the kargyraa progress i now reached a point that it feels like my whole throat is vibrating so it not only coming from my lower OR higher throat, but from both.
when you're making a low tone, the pressure of your throatmuscles should be different than when you're making a higher tone.
mmmhh.. as a vocalist i feel like this is going to hurt or create pollaps on my vocal chords

You are adding the gruff quality to the sound, but also dropping an octave, I think

Try humming the notes out of your nasal cavity before opening the mouth. It helps. Been throat singing for 5 years. Mostly Kargyraa.
