I bought my iphone about 2 weeks after it came out and I have dropped it probably 12 times...no cracks/chips/anything on the glass and only a few small scratches on the metal from the asphalt. It's not perfect but it is damn close. I'm brutal on phones and they usually only last a year or so. The iphone has held up better than every other phone I've ever owned.

Realistically, I've dropped my phone four or five times from that height and mine is fine. Your friends must have just got unlucky because the guy makes it out like poof! the thing drops, game over.
