Thanks for the video, and the recomendation on Audacity! I actually made my own mic box, similar to the Beach tech so I use xlr mics and there is almost no hissing or noise. I will be posting a video about my box( I call it the DHI xlr3.5) if you want to check it out.
I'm thinking about getting the wireless one but i would like to know does it come with a clamp so i can attach the receiver to a hotshot on my camera cuz if it doesn't then I'm going to go with the wired one and just connect it to zoom h1 that the person will keep in his pocket and sync the audio in post please get back to me thank you
I forget if I mentioned it in this video, but I later found out that I can reduce the mic level on my Canon HF M30. I dropped it by 30% and this helped with background noise as well.
The HFM30 has a standard 3.5mm jack (the same size as the smaller headphone jack). There is a a mic level that you can adjust. If you click the Menu button in the top left corner, you will see it on the right side. If it is set to the far left, then it won't record anything. YOu can set it to Auto, or Manual and make sure it is at least at the halfway point, if not further to the right. But if it is all the way to the right you can get hissing in the background.
I have an HFM30 as well and I have a cheap little computer mic I try to plug in but it doesn't work. What size jack is on the HFM30 and also do you need to mess with any of the settings or can you just plug it in?

Thanks for making this video. I have this exact camera and wired mic set-up. I am just heading out to do some video documentation for a legal case.
Thanks also for the recommendation of Audacity. I'll give that a shot!
UPDATE: I downloaded Audacity bu since I'm using iMovie I just reduced background noise to 50% and that did the trick.
