Everyone in the comments who were asking about the history of this ride and how it worked, check out "The Saucer Fleet" by ARA Press. There's a whole chapter on it.
Man..I remember being totally blown away by this ride..as was my family. I haven't thought of this ride in about 30 years! This is a gem! thanks for posting.
Yeah in 2012 there will be a flying saucers ride called Luigi's Roamin' Tires in Cars Land in DCA :D cant wait. I wasn't born when there were flying saucers
No wondwer they took this ride out, the saucers had no control or propulsion and everybody was stuck on those things just bouncing around without being able to ram each other.
It's rumored that they're going to bring a ride like this back. It's going to be at Cars Land in Disney's California Adventure. I think it had something to do with a character name Luigi? I'm not sure.
This attraction is being brought back to Disneyland California as part of Cars Land. They're going to look like rubber tires. You can find Cars Land on You Tube and look for it.
If small world can't withstand the people of today, how is this ride going to withstand the fat people of 2012. (nothing against fat people, just stating facts)
The whole "Smallworld can't withhold fat people", is a rumor. Disneyland actually dug the tunnels deeper and re- did the plates because when there was a crack they would re-pair it with cement, well after time and years the cement cracks began to build up and now the boats were getting stuck on the build up, that's all.
well, it's not an innoventions building attraction... but that is the format of the carosel of progress which is located now in walt disney world in tomorrowland.
@JasonMalaprop You're right! :) "A similar ride themed to the film Cars is proposed as part of the expansion to Disney's California Adventure that was announced on October 17, 2007."
@JasonMalaprop yep luigis roaming tires in cars land spring of 2012 and its also cool how theyre using the same veichles from the ones in this video they had them stored under the autopia track......

Early 60s. Providing you didn't hit another saucer to quickly, these saucers picked up fast speed when you leaned in any one direction and traveled across the ride area. It was much like the electric bumper cars. It was my favorite ride when I was 13-years-old.
Thanks for the video. Have never been able to ride the Flying Saucers, but it looks fun.
For every curious about this ride, or people who miss it, it is supposed to come back to Disneyland with more advanced technology so it won't break down. It is planned to be part of the new Cars land in the remodel of Disney's California Adventure.
Whew Oh I found this show our family go to disneyland and I was little boy this old ride wish back old ride often since 1958 to last 1985 moved to Texas I real miss so much and love place and wish go there but no money and no work since 1999 no one support that sad reason I am deaf guy : ) Tks

Disney could never get these to work very well, so they were eventually removed. Too bad—it was a fun concept.
