It plays with the theme that the best things in life are free. He earned the money to go to Beijing, but not the money to buy the shoes. He only went to Beijing so he could look at the shoes, not buy them. The price of the shoes were too much beyond the reach of his earnings. It also highlights the extreme disparity between the social economic classes in China. Some people who live in the lower class will never be able to afford in a lifetime what the upper middle class can make in a day.

@Hemitris What you are saying is true. me my father owning a factory in China made me work in it for 2 months. in those 2 months, i undestanded all the people there around 15-16 stopped school bcuz there is no point of them to continue. they needed money to support themselves and their parents. *to all who don't know the pay in China compare to u guys is great. (ex. if u were to go to china, u will be rich!) BUT we must understand that some people understand this is a way of life

I love the great details, such as the evolution of the hat though the film.

The music is amazing too. I can almost smell the air there. When the theme reentered around 5:00, it makes me so sad.

Beautiful cinematography, it has the meloncholy reminiscent in charlie chaplin films. I would have cast an older weaker man to maximize the potential emotional impact. The guy you have now looks like a sly football player :)
