When this film was released in the USA in 1965 it was retitled "Go-Go Mania". I saw it in a theater at the age of 11.
I thought it was odd that a British group called themselves the "Nashville Teens" and sang songs about the south. But I liked this song.
"Tobacco Road" was originally the name of a sleazy novel published in the 1930s, which in turn became a sleazy (for that time) stage play in New York. The characters were all criminals or retards or inbred gimps who lived on Tobacco Road.
the hosty is Jimmy Saville, very popular in the 60's as a music show host. Still shows up today every now and then. He used to dye his hair tartan, cigars were one of his trade marks.
It's a 1965 film called "Pop Gear" with a lot of groups, mostly British, in some pretty stylized presentations. Try a site called The Video Beat, which specializes in DVD versions of stuff like this.
What a great Song I remember this song when it was a hit in the 60's To bad that Stupid Morons (CBS) figure Oldies Stations need to Play 70's Disco Music and Doctor Office Covers,
CBS Wake up you have a Monopoly in Radio Stations in Los Angeles
Give us back KRTH and take the KRTH Junk Format to The Wave or KOST
Like I said Pre CBS Fender Guitars are Priceless. Los Angeles Needs a Pre CBS KRTH.
I'm glad this was picked for Mad Men credits tonight. I always liked this 60's hit and this group was terrific. Infectious beat there and mad piano playing!
What a great copy of one of the all time classics by John D. Loudermilk. Everybody and their hound has done this number, but The Teens were the first and one of the best of all time. What great piano work by John Hawken. These guys were ahead of their time in early 60's. Thanks for sharing this little bit of British Invasion History...
This is a Nashville Teens song. The BEST of the British Invasion bands. IMHO
They never got the recognition they deserved.
The guys singing are Art Sharp (the tall one) and Ray Philips (the short one0
Ray has one of the best voices ever. If you don't believe me go listen to
House Of The Rising Sun by the British Invasion All Stars (search The British Invasion All-Stars - The House of the Rising Sun ) and Little Bird by Ray Philiips & Zalatnay Sarolta (search ARay Phillips & Zalatnay Sarolta)
I should also say that - from what I've read over the years - the 'Teens didn't actually play on this recording; it was all session men - and very probably, the great Bobby Graham played the drums - as he did on thousands of other British Invasion records.
This was from a movie called "Pop Gear", I think. I don't ever recall seeing it playing in my local theaters - I watched it on tv one afternoon when I was cutting school. They also performed "Google Eye", as well. "Tobacco Road" was the end of the road for The Nashville Teens' in the US. "Google Eye" went nowhere.
This was a great British Invasion record, though. It was on London Records with a purple and white 45 label - same as The Stones' "Time Is On My Side". 1964 was the year.
Wow ! Great post ! Historically significant !

I thought this song was done by Americans since he had a rockabilly sound with the name Nashville. Love this song all the same. They did a great job.
