  • So the "find.exe" program doesn't seem to work as intended in the NookandZergy bat file. It kept giving me the message:

find: ro.product.device=blaze: No such file or directory

I had to comment out this line to get it to work. From what I could gather, the find.exe command is different in Windows 7 (and possibly Vista) from XP but I can't confirm this. On my system it doesn't seem to offer the ability to search for text within a file as the batch script suggests it should.

  • @DGot14U i just used that program to find out where the download, went. if you know where your computer puts downloaded files, you dont have to use that program.

  • market does not show on my honeycomb? And when I try it says it has been forced closed.

  • @techboss202 try rebooting? Which launcher you using to run? try unroot and reroot? or install adb hijack, follow that video, and rerun installation and reinstall gapps

  • NookandZergy said, "first need to make sure you didnt lie about it showing up, I also need to check for root incase you want to run any updates!" Can I have some help?

  • @Mineercraft im having this same problem, some help would be appreciated

  • @dotson100 Nevermind! Minercraft be sure to run the "run me first" bat file and follow the directions there, it worked for me. i didnt see it at first lol

  • @dotson100 Yeah I got my Nook Tablet root I have mac but I was using Parallels so it was sort of weird but I got a root for mac running gingerbread not honeycomb but it still very good

  • I selected honeycomb and used it but what can i do to bring back the options to select and use the ADW launcher ?

  • @nyckillaheat just load adw from market or install hijack adb app and re run nook zergy and chose adw this time and it will add

  • @albertcwertz thanks, I figured it out the moment i asked. lol

  • IT WORKS!

  • Excellent. It worked and ended some frustration. Thanks again.

  • I did this root the other day and all went well. I can't seem to get .apk files to load from an SD card or from an e-mail attachment. The files are not found when looking at the SD card and files won't open when downloaded from e-mail attachment. An help or direction would be great. Thanks.

  • @bowerrm71 must use es file explorer to install

  • I picked the ADW Launcher but I am wanting to try out the Honeycomb launcher. How do I change this? When I open up NookZergy it tells me I have not installed the ADB hijack and then exits.

How do I get back to where I can switch out the launcher? Thanks for creating the video, also!

  • @boweveljoe watch th video on adb hijack and download

  • @albertcwertz That worked flawlessly. Thank you very much! :-)

  • sorry if you have answered this question already. i have it showing up as an android composite ADB interface now, and when i run nookandzergy, it will find the device, i type Y stating that it's there and it hangs on verifying that it's a BnN NT. i notice that the build.prop disappears from the ntroot folder at that point, and if i rerun zergy without replacing it, it will immediately verify that i have a BnN NT but then hang due to the missing build.prop file. any help might help me stay sane!

  • @rdymrtnz try another pc

  • @albertcwertz lol, i had tried a win7 64, an xp sp3, and a vm xp sp2. the virtual machine xp sp2 was the one that finally played nice as far as seeing it as an android composite adb interface... and i thought that i finally was going to make some headway... could it be that it's a virtual machine that is messing with the process? i had seen many others use vm's and had it run smoothly. either way, i suppose i can try the other machines all over again just in case.

  • @rdymrtnz you try running bat file as administrator?

  • @albertcwertz just attempted it, and on that xp vm, i have that option for other shortcuts and programs, but for some reason not for the bat. ... hehe, figures! so in the mean time i am wrestling with one of the win 7 pc's to try and get those drivers set up right.

  • @albertcwertz and by the way, thanks so much for replying at all! very appreciated!

  • For some reason i can't create folders. Has anyone been able to create a folder?

  • @greendaydiaz I know folders works on paid version of ADW

  • Accidentally uninstalled all nook tablet drivers! Went ahead and rooted anyways. Memory still isnt unlocked nookandzergy says I havent installed adb hijack. Should I unroot restore to factory and retry? Or am I just screwed

  • @mastersmiff if it never rooted then you should troubleshoot drivers and try again. depends on what exactly happened, this process is very flawless, I have yet to see a brick from it, so never screwed

  • I have rooted my Nook Tablet two times...

First root: i have find a bug when i install adw launcher (gallery3d not found) and when reboot you can't use N button and keyboard disappear....so i reset to factory mod.

Second root: i have install honeycomb launcher, and when reboot i choose homecatcher but after does not show which launcher select.... why?

  • @i4Geek install another launcher from web or market and you will be prompted to chose one as default

  • I see my nook show up, but when i go down to the USB folder is doesn't have the ! next to the mass storage device. and when i try to go further from there to finish the nookzergy it won't show up on the black box with red writing. Any solutions? Thanks

  • @morrisdyl this is almost always a driver issues if everything else is the same, I would try another person or maybe a trouble shoot phone call to someone... I do offer this service as a last resort

  • One more thing... does rooting give you access to the other 12 gigs of memory B&N has hogged? if so, is there something special I need to do for that?

  • @silenceisgod you can access it but your apps can not read from it. with roms they may gain us access with a repartition

  • Please help me, and thanks for getting me this far. I opened 'NookandZergy' and my device didn't appear. Now when I installed the usbdrivers, I didn't have an exclamation point on ANYTHING, which really confused me, so I just unplugged everything but my Nook, keyboard, and mouse. I took a wild guess and chose port 1 because that's what it looks like my Nook is plugged in. Could you help me figure out as to why this is happening? Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate it!

  • @ChristianOrtega123 Nevermind, I got it! Thanks!

  • @ChristianOrtega123 i had the same issue .. both the ".zip" files you downloaded had a file named "runmefirst.bat" .. i sure that when you unzipped the nook&zergy file to the C:\nroot\ folder you got a message asking whether you wanted to replace the aforementioned file .. and you probably clicked yes ..

if so .. solution to the problem .. re-unzip the usbdrivers zip file to the C:\nroot\ folder and follow all the directions as presented in the video ..

    good luck

  • @v2012394 I'm sorry, I should've deleted my comment because I fixed it, but thank you! That is exactly what a did. Thanks!! :D

  • Thanks for the Great video! It worked perfect for me. My question is how do i transfer movies from my pc to the nook. I keep getting error message not enough memory. I thought rooting the nook would give me access to all the hard drive space on the nook and not be limited to the 1 gb. Thanks for everything you're the best!

  • I'm using es file explorer but i don't know how to transfer files to the NT and keeping the 1gb free.

  • @greendaydiaz do u mean using Widgets and live wallpapers? Download those from market.

  • @greendaydiaz you will need to use a micro SD card (up to 32gb class4 or better). B&N has locked 13gb of space for B&N content ..

  • Sorry I hate to ask a dumb dumb question, but you guys are way beyond me. .. lol. Your videos worked flawlessly. I was able to get the nook working its awesome. i noticed that several of the apps in the market either dont show up or say they are not compatable when I do a search ( ie itunes, orbitz facebook just as examples). Is this because of something that I did wrong during the process? thanks again forthe awesome work

  • @FWKeatingiv no, because android market says WTF when it sees Nook Tablet. This should be fixed when we get roms working.

  • @albertcwertz yeah i did everything exactly like your videos?

  • try the usb driver program mentioned at the end of the video @PRog16

  • ok fixed my last problem by rebooting, when doing the new root it asks if you want to install the OTA blocker and i hit yes , does tha tmean i dont need to install titanium now?

  • @Grndragon26 check to see if version 9.9.9 if it is this then no, if it is still 1.4.0 then yes

  • @albertcwertz ok then i'll turn off wifi till i can get a memory card as it needs it to download the file not liking honecomb somethings aren't right so to change the launcher will i have to re-root? or is there a way to download a launcher in an app store or something?

  • @albertcwertz nm after a reboot it is now showing 9.9.9 so i guess all is well now to figure out a way to get other launchers on here

not a fan of honeycomb maybe it's cause i'm not used to it but it doesn't make sense

  • @Grndragon26 go to market and download adw launcher

  • Quick question, is there any way to get around the whole driver issue where it doesn't recognize the drivers for the tablet. Ive had the tablet for a while and have already hooked it to my computer before deciding to do the root and i have gotten all the way through the first video and to 4:09 on this video where the Nook and Zergy should recognze my device but it does not. What can I do?

  • @PRog16 u run runmefirst.bat?

  • Thanks!

  • Has there been any progress on the full rooting?

ps. Thanks, this is totally awesome!

  • @demonskunkstudios you mean access to romming? We have an unlock to the boot loader, but Barnes and noble failed to release a compilable source so they are in breach of opensource agreement. Until they honor this, we cant compile a legit kernel

  • @albertcwertz hmm. so this could end up potentially becoming a lawsuit?

either way, I'm assuming without that access, it's impossible to re-partition it's storage space, or fully convert it into a 'normal' android tablet?

  • worked like a charm. Just one question when I finishwed the process the only thing that didnt work is that the screen wont go landscape when i turn the tablet. Is there a way to adjust this

  • @FWKeatingiv try unplugging usb and rebooting? i have not heard of this

  • Thanks for great viideos. My question is howcome I can't access the SD card? I have all my book save there. Thanks

  • @equate5 try reboot, pop out and back in and try again with es file explorer

  • Just wanted to drop a line letting you know used the instructions in your vids. been going couple weeks now absolutely problem free with WIFI always on. Can't wait for a full side load root like my color on Cm7 is. Thanks very much for you time on this and to the great devs out there.

  • I followed the videos all the way through until you run the Zergy.bat file. When I do, it doesn't see the Nook device. I went back into the Nook and made sure that the USB debugging was checked and it is. When I connect the USB cable, it comes up and says USB debugging connected. It also shows up in the device manager as Android Phone/Android Composite ADB Interface. I'm using Windows XP, does that matter any? I deleted the USB drivers and re-installed them. Same result. Please help.

  • @chrrjones ok, nevermind on the above issue. On the video, you don't show running he "runmefirst.bat" file. I deleted the driver, ran that file, then re-installed the driver and the Nook came up in the Zergy.bat file. The Zergy file asked at the end if you want to block OTAs. Is this ok to use this blocker or do I need to do it the way that you have specified on the other video with Titanium? Thanks alot for this great tutorial!

  • @chrrjones use that one but i think you still have to use titanium to block

  • what do i do if my device doesn't show up when i run the Zergy?

  • I used this full root and everything was working fine until this morning. android market is gone and when i go into busybox it say that it is not rooted??? Was there a firmware update?? what can i do to get it back, can i just run nook and zergy again?

  • @516jamied ok so it is the update to the 1.4.1. but i did not know that it would update by itself, so i have the same question as grubynook, how do i go back to 1.4.0 and can i just run nook zergy again?

  • @516jamied watch video on 1.4.0 revert and then after rerooted, make sure do OTA block. Video on all of it

  • @albertcwertz finally bought a new sd card and fixed the tablet now running version 9.9.9 thanks so much!!! i am very technology handicapped and would have returned my daughters nook tablet if when found out that she could not use the 16g until i found your videos. the NT is pretty useless without the root. thank you for all of your time and effort.

  • @516jamied try patch with hijack adb or start over. make sure you backup often with titanium

  • I was trying to use my tablet the other day and now certain apps like the android market, my calendar, calculator, email app, and weather app dont work anymore. Whenever i tap on it, it just says Honeycomb launcher in a black box at the top of the screen, would you happen to know what happened? I didnt update or anything

  • @Blackmage456 not sure. maybe something was uninstalled by someone else? or was updated? version number? I would do over. or patch with hijack if still have superuser

  • Albert - just wanted to check: Nook&Zergy will work on a Macbook, yea?

  • @fish22dry no, there is a different mac specific proceedure, see xda

  • Sorry, was just a comment. Thanks for all the instructional videos.

  • I have a question. When I was opening the NookandZergy batch file, the command prompt wuold get a 'adb is not recognized as an internal or external command'. I found out that the problem was me opening the file as an administrator. When I simply double-clicked it, I was able to easily root my device. Do you know why it wouldn't let me use the batch file as an Administrator?

  • @MrPie455 not sure, but I have seen this before. last time I saw it the root ran anyway and gave this error every step but in the end everything worked just aswell. weird.

  • If device doesn't show up after running NookandZergy, run runmefirst bat first and then NZ. It should recognize the tablet. Worked for me.

  • @franklin1863 is this a question, comment? or what?

  • i stupidly did not the 141 update. now the root is broken. i had to go back to 140 after buying the unit originally before the initial root, so do i just do that again? will using the return-to-140 process allow me to just go through the whole process (as I did the first time)? do i need to deregister the table first, and then reset to 140, or not?

  • @grubynook yes ;)

  • @albertcwertz I rooted my device with pretty much no issues (just some driver issues, uninstalled and reinstalled then they worked), but my real issue is actually with the Market. When I search for certain apps like Angry Birds, NHL Gamecenter or WatchESPN they do not show up in the market. And a lot of other apps don't show as well. Any ideas as what went wrong and how to fix it? I tried searching XDA but didn't find anything of real use. Any help would be great. Thanks.

  • @mrtweak13 sideload them from frewarelover dotcom. something is wrong with the way android market sees the nook... this wasnt meant to be u know ;)

  • @albertcwertz I also have an error on my NT that says "Problem loading widget" but that's all it says.

  • @DebInDixie so delete the widget? ;) try installing adw or adw ex, they work better for me, less widget problems

  • @albertcwertz I would but I don't know a) how to delete the widget and b) which widget it is. I am using ADW per your recommendation in the video.

  • @DebInDixie long hold and chose delete

  • Comment removed

  • is there anyway to reset the default for the n home key I unfortunetly set it as the nooks home and not the honeycomb launcher home key and clicked the default key

  • @riehleryan There is an app called homecather that will change the values for the hardware "n" button.

  • @JudgeH2O if I hit homecatcher it just asks me to donate

  • @riehleryan unrooted and rerooted fixed the problem thank you Albert!!

  • THANK YOU! This is the best tutorial ve seen in a long time !

  • At first I couldn't get Zergy to recognize My Tablet. Just update the driver and then it should work. Thanks again, Albert!

  • well it is me again and you said that using es file explorer, you could exploit the other partition of the nook. Well i allowed root access on the settings of ES file Explorer and mounted it as the thing it said to mount as:)

however, as a transfer files, i receive an "example" was not copied. and yeah so i dont know what to do?

sorry i should be posting in the dev place but you give much much quicker responses. THANK YOU

  • @424aca i am not sure how soon I can film this but I will add it to the list.

  • @albertcwertz Thank You very much. There is already a thread for this but it does not help. (involves too much code crap) i am barely competent w/ what they/it says

  • Albert Wertz is right on the money when he says the ADW is his preferred launcher. I found the Honeycomb launcher constantly generating errors. The ADW launcher is much slicker and more stable for me. Thanks for the video! My Nooklet, as I call it, is now a useful piece of machinery.

  • any idea how to make adw launcher keep the wallpaper I have set on the BN home. It keeps on zooming in.

  • @Br4inDeadDan setting in ADW launcher will allow you to change how it handles wallpapers. I am not sure if it is in free version or paid only

  • The pictures in the market don't show up. I even tried to download an older version

  • @thefireburns85 what pictures?

  • Quick Question, I know the Nook Tablet had 16 gigs of memory to use for things ONLY from the B&N Store, can we use this memory after rooting? Everything worked great, thanks for the tut!

  • @Thatacoustic yes, but it can only be accessed by a root file browser and through the tablet itself. so you can use it if you fill up your 1 gig partition through usb then use es file explorer to transfer from 1 gig to 15 gig

  • @albertcwertz Thanks for the tips, everything works. Just wanted to know where the apps from the marketplace are stored and if I can set that to the SD card as default? since they won't be going to the 15gb partition and I want to try and avoid the data switch from the 1gb partition to the internal memory (or the SD card, trying to avoid an operation) Thanks!

  • @MAkinola i dont think you can set it as default but once they have been installed, certain apps can be moved to the sd card through the app manager.

  • @albertcwertz Thank you for your quick response. The only reason I asked is because I thought that the apps I was downloading from the market would be going into the 1gb partition, but it actually seems like they are going into the main partition which is fine (looked at my device info and it showed my "other storage" at 100% free). So I assumed that things I get from the market are going to my internal larger partition. Is this correct? Thanks for all your help!

  • @MAkinola yes, correct

  • @albertcwertz Excellent! If I donate to XDA do you get anything? Can I donate to you as well?

  • @MAkinola thank you, when you click a donation button next to someone's name or in their signature on the xda forums it goes straight to that person's paypal. So if you want to donate to me, find any of my posts and click the donation button in my signature or right under my name. Same for developers.

  • thanks brotha

  • I did everything in the root, except for loading a launcher... I did not want to change what it looked like. How do I get to the android market from the main menu on the nook?

  • use search button when press n button chose search. If does not appear. Go to settings and make sure search option is set to search library. Honestly. Just go to android market and install a launcher@PlanetX751

  • Great videos! I'm curious, installed honeycomb launcher like in the video. If we want to try the ADW launcher, how to we run/install that?

  • @quicksilverz2000 install additional launchers from android market

  • I've tried doing this multiple times, it gets hung up on "Killing ADB and restarting as root..." and it either wont go any farther, or when it does, and prompts me to install gapps, it will say for evert action that it has failed. The kicker is that it restarted though...

  • @maverick223 so i got through it, but the google apps store is not available... it was saying that it failed to install it while installing the thing in the first place

  • @maverick223 It sounds like you forgot to extract before running. make sure you extract all files then run.

  • Comment removed

  • There is a file next to nookandzergy.bat that says runmefirst.bat... do we need to run that first? It's not mentioned in the video.

  • @quicksilverz2000 it is meant for driver setup. if you are having driver issues you may try it out.

  • @albertcwertz Thank you SO much for these instructions. I consider myself somewhat computer saavy but I have never done anything like this before! I ran into so many problems using my own laptop with Win 7, but when I did it on my son's computer which runs WIn XP it was a breeze! Thank you so much!

  • Thank you so much for these videos! I was able to root my NT with no problem (at this point I chose NOT to debloat my NT). I still had the Barnes & Noble browser, so I followed your other video to unroot it (went off without a hitch). I rooted it again right after and had no problem whatsoever and instead chose the debloat option "1" to get rid of B&N launcher, games, Pandora, etc. My NT is rooted, but I still have the B&N browser. Is there any way to get the Honeycomb browser? Thanks again!

  • @girlyysounds search for it in market. all the browsers are there too I think

  • Comment removed

  • I've tried to root my device twice and only had partial success. When I press the home button it takes me back to the B&N version of the home page and I can't get back to my tablet-style home without restarting. I'm unrooting now. Is there something I can do to make sure it works the next time?

    Thanks for the videos.

  • @autocrossbow when presented with the option make sure you chose home catcher and set as default. then chose a lancher that is not the barnes and noble home launcher. chose adw, go launcher or honeycomb. you can also download a free launcher any time from the web or market

  • @albertcwertz Thanks, I got everything sorted out by unrooting and doing everything again, more carefully.

  • @424aca nevermind, I, like a dipshit, did not turn the debugging on and plugged it in, so the other devices thing was not there and you said something about uninstalling the mass storage device driver. I think that step is wrong.(I THINK) but when i did that the nookandzergy.bat would not find my device. but anyway thank you

  • @424aca if debuggin is not turned on it will never find your device. but you know that now ;)

  • um that line does not appear for me. in the nook and zergy thing.

however the android phone driver appears after all the steps in video one.

also i can't view the nook files or the files in the sd card. is that normal.

and when i click n and then enter it just checks but does not continue to do anything else

  • @424aca also in the usb viewer program in the end of vid one shows that

    Android ADB Interface

    USB Composite Device

    USB Input Device

    are connected

  • Comment removed

  • i watched the first video and got the usb debugging working but when i run the nookandzergy bat file it doesn't find my nook does any one have any ideas of what i should do and Im also version 1.4.0 so that not the problem

  • run "runmefirst.bat" see if that helps then re run nook zergy @lex487

  • Would you happen to know how to get rid of that USB Mode message when its hooked up into the computer?

  • @Blackmage456 cant. nook blocks you because you are accessing the partition from your pc. android phones do the same thing. you are not allowed to acces the same thing from 2 different devices. phones will still allow you to do other stuff, but nook locks you completely out

  • Thanks. I still don't quite get it, but will be watching. Happy Holidays!

  • @grubynook sleep on it and watc video again ;)

  • Thanks, it works! I had to restore my tablet from 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 and then use root process. What I don't understand is why some apps do not show up in this version of market, which do show up in other versions of market. For example, iheartradio is in market on my rooted nook color ( & works on it), but doesn't show up in market that is on tablet. What's more, when I try to install it from another source, it says it is not compatible with my device (tablet). Other apps, too. What causes this?

  • @grubynook nook tablet was not meant to see market. we will fix in future. right now we have to deal with this.

  • I have another question. I rooted my tablet according to the videos and have been using it for a few weeks now. However, whenever I click on any of my new android apps (such as Google Talk, Calendar, etc) a black box appears at the top of the screen that says "Honeycomb Launcher" and nothing happens. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

  • @shobe6 never had this problem

  • Great video! Thanks for posting. Okay, sorry for this noob question. How do I go back to NookAndZergy and choose from the other launchers without repeating the whole process?

Also is there anything extra that I need to do to block OTAs other than selecting yes on Gapps?

  • @RiverBendCardinal no, can only chose one, but you can download them from the android market once rooted

  • Do you plan on making a video to root ice cream sandwhich?

  • @Soulburnz424 This does not exist yet. please read the forums. As soon as rom-ing is available I will film it

  • Comment removed

  • whenever i download an app it says it closes unexpectedly. help!

  • @qwerty12161 which app? may be one that is not compatible?

  • Finally got this to work as it should, thank you for the videos. I am curious though. I thought that rooting would allow full access to the internal 16 GB of storage. I am still showing 1 GB available. Ideas?

  • @slsmith1971 you will always show 1gb, the other 15 must be accessed from the tablet with a root explorer like es explorer from market

  • Thank you so much!!!

  • @albertwertz thanks for the reply, switched computers and it worked.. I'm a happy camper.. Thanks again :)

  • When i run NookandZergy bat cant get my device to show... Any suggestions?

  • @tempest989 did you try watching and following instructions for part 1?
