Thanks ran this tests, everything worked fine. While doing the tests found that the cooling fan relay was not making good contact where the legs plug in. Had I not ran your test would have never found the problem. Thanks
You missed something that I found. I decided before installing a new fan motor to re-test the relay, and for some reason I tested the large fuses to the right. Apparently the 30A fuse for the cooling fan was blown. Your video didn't mention that there was another fuse that worked in conjunction with the relay.
hello rich where did you tapped the test light at the fan motor? from battery positive going to negative side on the wire socket of the fan? am i right? thanks
@mhonarc74 I touched the test light to the outside of the motor housing with the other end of the test light on the pos post of the battery. This confirms if the motor is grounded.
The relay is on backwards...on this Video. We had our's like this too...and our fans would never work. Finally a few wks...ago...a Mechanic told us our relay was on Backwards. The little dot on the corner...should be facing those fuses. We had bought a new Fan Motor at the Saturn house...and the fan still wasn't working. It is now...since a Mechanic from another auto shop discovered that the relay was on wrong...like in this Video.
ONE TIP, you can swap the relay from your A/C to the cooling fan relay. You can buy a replacement motor for 25 bucks at autozone. The replacement motor was a little too big by a hair, so I had to send the plastic housing a little to fit it in and tap it in with a hammer, then tighten the bolts to pull it down. Way cheaper than the dealer. QUESTION, if your coolant sensor gauge works on the dash, shouldn't the fan work if the engine gets hot I though the temp sensorshares two functions?
Hi rich, new here, just wanna ask you something about the fan.coz it doesnt work even the engine is very hot. But when i turn on the air condition the fan works. May i know what could this be? Thanks!
thanks a lot rich..i'll change mine today.hope it will show difference. I'll soon post a video about my saturn.just wanna know if its in good condition. if you dont kind, i wanna get a comment from you in that video...
There engine might not be getting hot enough to turn the fan on.A scan tool or a thermometer in the expansion tank will tell you if the fan is working properly .
Ok thanks a lot. Also when you connect the alligator clip to the positive terminal what part of the fan motor are you touching? I'm assuming the positive terminal? Sorry I know this is a stupid question but just want to make sure. Thanks again.
Hey I like your videos a lot as they are helping me fix my gf's car. What is the tool your using to test the grounding of the fan motor and the relay? Also is the jumper tool something i can buy or do i have to fabricate it? I have decent automotive knowledge, but electrical stuff always scared me..haha. Thanks again for posting.

ok but how do you fix when there is a problem from the relays wires?

@2ub40
Find were the problem is and splice in a new wire or replace the whole wire.

The most common reason is a bad engine coolant temp sensor.

I am touching the outside metal housing of the motor which needs to be grounded for it to work.

The tool used for testing the fan motor is a 12 volt test light. The fused jumper wire is nothing more than a 20 amp fuse with two wires solder to it.

@richpin06a where do i get the test wire and jumper wire
nidagichole 1 year ago
@nidagicholeI am not sure, I made the one i used.

@richpin06a What size fuse did you use? Looked like a Green one. 20a?
patfromtexas 1 year ago
@patfromtexas It is a yellow one 20 amp
richpin06a 1 year ago
@nidagichole I believe they make them now at Autozone. Can't be sure if every place carries them.
