  • I was fortunate to ride behind 618 when they hosted the U.P. Historical Society in 2003 or so. A fine engine and this is a fabulous run-by. LOVE that Star Brass!! Engineer does a good job holding her right on the edge of adhesion, too. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and yes, "all" Union Pacific engines other than the 4-8-4's, 4-6-6-4's and Big Boys had these whistles (with very few exceptions). This was the "Common Standard" whistle after March 1923.

  • I wish they would leave 618 like this I prefer it this way I have Nothing againt the 618 in that appearence but I like this one too I never got to see 618 like this as the 1068..this scene sort of remends me of my shots in December in China in the deep snow but it was a working 2 foot narrowgauge coal hauling railroad in everyday service

  • wll she be in service durin july or august because thats when im goen

  • Is this the 618, that's just in a different shape?

  • Yup, UP 618's original number is 1068 and she was built for the Oregon Short Line.

  • That stack talk is just amazing. The mountains are stunning, too.

  • That is correct, it has a Star Brass 5 chime. I believe it is original from when it was on the UP.

  • that is amazing they did a damn good job backdateing that engine to its origional appearance WOW it looks really nice like that now if they could aquire a true Rio Grande steam engine and caboose for that branch that would be great

  • Did all UP engines use this whistle, or is the Hancock 3-chime on the 844 original?

  • This sounds like the engine has a UP Star Brass five-chime whistle on it, is that true? Is that its' usual whistle?

    Thanks, great video!

  • Nice!

  • Love those whistle echoes!
