i remember finding a letter in his cabinet that said something to the effect "if your reading this your a theif.." Was worried if i didnt put the stuff back Hrothgar might kill me lol.
That kind of game (Like BG 1 and 2, or NWN, etc...) had a particular "flavour" or "taste", I could almost smell the burned log in the house of Hrothgar, or the smell of the snow on Targos, the smell of the leather armour of my ranger as he sneaked through the dusky woods. For me, it will always be a kind of tale of a big dusty book that has been told in winter. Thanks to that kind of game, and that kind of music, I am able to feel the cold wind blowing in the legendary vales of Icewind.
@Ehrsam666 IWD1, BG1 and PS:T, yes, but not the rest, and I think the key reason for that was the 640x480 resolution, which really made the world in the game seem so big it would suck you in. NWN1's environment, however, was too generic and bland to be as atmospheric as the Infinity Engine series.
I actually see a large influence from Beowulf in Icewind Dale. How an adventurer (or adventurers) is sent to a town where he must fight off three evils, and an important leader being named Hrothgar. It's quite interesting, actually.
I purchased this game in a "special edition bundle" that came with the "Heart of Winter" expansion and the soundtrack CD. I didn't get to play it because we were heading to the west of Oklahoma the very next day. Interestingly, OK was experiencing heavy snows at the time, and the music CD was quite apropos to the winter atmosphere. This song especially captures the feeling of heading out on a trek in the early morning snow...
IWD Soundtrack is so great. Nobody would write such a great song as a theme used in a small house of a character that gets killed at the beginning of the game :)

All the songs of IWD are beautiful, I often use them when telling a story as a DM. They do the trick. :)

@Nhordmyr
DM stands for Dungeon Master when you play the pan and paper rpg of WotC called D&D which, if you ask me, is the greatest game ever. :)
