I love the look of the FJ but the X-terra looks damn nice too. All things considered, I think the X-terra is the superior vehicle. They've got nearly equal cargo capacity but the X-terra has 4 full doors (FJ has "clam shell" doors in rear) and a more powerful engine. Also, some road tests indicate the X-terra has a superior 4-wheel drive system and often makes hill climbs with ease that give the FJ trouble. Plus I just happen to be a fan of Nissan and think Toyota is over-rated.
@JackKangaroo1 xterra better onroad, fj better off. Not a comparisson to me, just because of the superior power and availability of a-trac on the fj. Gives it the "xtra" advantage that nissan hasn't put into a 4wd system.
@roadman89NE I pulled up one video on Youtube of a hill climb up a huge dune in the desert of Saudi Arabia. An FJ Cruiser tried three times to get up the hill and failed. Then an X-terra did it on the first try. I think they are both great vehicles but I still think that Nissan has the edge in this competition both on-road and off-road.
Runswigger, nobody would buy the thing if it had a solid axle up front, it'd drive as shitty as a jeep then. You uneducated people that think IFS is bad have never been wheeling. Solid is great for hardcore rock crawling but IFS has superior ground clearance and handling. A friend of mine has an Isuzu truck, a 300hp sbc and STOCK IFS and runs 35" Swampers, it hasn't broke yet!
if he had better tires he would have made it. i have a Xterra stock on 31's and it always suprizies me on how much it can do with out a lift or lockers
1st gen xterras don't come with good all terrain tires, I have an 04 xterra stock tires are worn down I've never gotten stuck. The xterra is awesome for offroading but I'd have to say my favorite is Landrover Defender rugged little bastards, like wranglers but better.
Ok, anyone who thinks a Forester is good for offroading doesn't know what offroading is. Between the low body clearance and the lack of a low range gear, a Forester wouldn't even make it to the trailhead on most trails around here. Driving around in snow or shallow mud, fine, I can see a Forester being fun for that, but serious offroading, no chance.
I miss my Pathfinder. It was a tank. It could take a hit and keep going. Mine had 200,000 miles on it and i had to junk it a year and a half ago because it was destroyed in a crash. So i didnt get in that accident i would probably still have it today.
I myself own a 2004 rocky mountain edition grand cherokee and a 2000 xterra both are stock except I had put new Nokian tires on the jeep and in every way possible off road my grand cherokee out performs my nissan,
this video sucks! this cant be considered an off road challenge, this is very very easy... if you want the best off road car, use a Subaru Forester or a Tribeca
You must be smoking something to come up with such a ridiculous statement. The two vehicles you mentioned are LAST two anyone (with any knowledge, whatsoever) would ever consider to be an off-road type vehicle!
A person buys a Subaru because they need a car to get them to the grocery store or the mall when there's a few inches of snow on the ground. Nothing more or less...
Must be cool being an e-thug troll these days, huh?!
Your right man !! Thats true... If you see the new 09 Forester it is much more taller than the other versions, and is AMAZING for offroading, I can say that because my dad got one !!!!!
good for your mom to borrow and pick up some soccor kids in a snow storm lol it's a awd car, great at what it's designed for but not for serious off road...
@rumswigger . the Xterra is built on the frontiers frame and is the only compact suv that is based on a truck frame. also it is 4wd not awd. soccer moms buy pathfinders and armadas. nissan so named the xterra. X for generation X the market they intended on selling them too. and terra for the terrain it would be intended to drive on. nissan built this truck with offroading in mind yes they could have done better but it would then cost more and most young people don't have alot of $.
@THEARMEDLIFE o shit ya lol forgot, i was thinking x trail lol apparently it's in the x market too lol my buddy's got a xterra, not a bad ride. if only they would put a solid front axel..... o yeah that's what usually happens when it built up for off-roading.
HAHAHAH please bring your forester or tribeca and come wheeling with me and my X, don't get me wrong I had an 03 WRX and loved the thing but a FORESTER???? please whats the ground clearance? 4 inches? compared to an X of 8.3 inches, any time you are in my part of the woods look me up we will go wheelin
The latest Forester has 8.9 inches. But I agree with you at least with the fact that the Forester (and other cars like it) can't match the capability of more serious off roaders. Low range, live axles, etc are rarely offered in less serious off roaders. Although an exception being the Panda 4x4 with a rear live axle and low ratio first gear.
I tend to agree with you cgrojas, a Forester is a better off-road choice than an Xterra at least the 1st and 2nd generations of the Forester. Especially in snow as I learned this past winter comparing with my neighbours Xterra. Anyone saying a Forester is not very capable off-road doesn't really know what they are talking about or is just trying to be an idiot spreading ignorance.
wow you are ignorant! Land Rover are the BEST off road cars in the world! watch the movie of the 3 discorverys that drive all the way around the world. (minus water obviously) if one had been here it would have kicked that japanese's cars assw
Seeing as the Xterra is like 1/2 the price of a Land Rover.
The Xterra is one of the best (-$40k) SUV's off-road up there with the Wrangler and FJ. This is like comparing a Porsche to a WRX, ones faster and way more expensive.
The LR2's look like a soccermom SUV.
Oh, "doitanyway." "Go back to the burbs?" Xterra's were made for people that don't want a bunch of leather, DVD, Nav systems, etc. I see wayy more Discoveries and LR2's in the rich ass burbs. They're never even gonna see a dirt road...
they're not meant for offroad tho, they're meant to be flashy, and you know it. They're better than jeeps I'll give you that one, but not better than the X.
RETARDED....that model xterra doesn't come with a locking rear and comes with sh*tty tires. I'll race the fj up a steep/rutted trail with a built jeep. Better yet i'll let the fj go first. hows that for equal racing.
My dad bought a 2001 Nissan Xterra (manual). For just 7 years of service is a bad SUV. The starting engine and the alternator keeps breaking very often; the interior plastic parts are always getting loose and also if you go to a Nissan dealer it's hard to find parts for an Xterra. The chasis was designed for the old 90's Frontier (a small pick-up truck) not for a SUV, so if you are a passenger you will hurt your back in a while.
You can tell he had radial tires . That one was for the street not the mud, or he don't know how to drive!!!!! I have had mine in some shit and haven't got stuck .. Plus I had fun thats all that mattered !!!!!!
where are the other vehicles? dont call it a vs with made up trucks lol

If you like shitty, unreliable cars that look like a mom SUV, sure an LR2 / Discovery would be a great choice.
On the other hand, if you like the Rugged, No Frills (or bullshit) rig with excellent 4WD, handling, Sexy Roof Rack, MPG Xterras are the way to go.
