True, romantic tragedy, as you word it, is boring. However, Korine never pretends to be so or any other kind of intentional pretensiousness (sp?). In some interview somewhere, I believe he said he doesn't knowingly exploit or aim for a grand tragedy, simply (paraphrase) films images and characters he would like to personally see.
His comments on his drug abuse don't seem to martyr or beg for sympathy, just distant memories of his recklessness
