Someone cannot compare a dramatic quality voice with a lyric/light voice. Whitney is a dramatic soprano or mezzo, her voice is very strong like Shirley Bassey, Mariah is a lyric/light soprano because of her range, in one interview she said she is actualy an alto and because of her vodules can access higher notes.
One can maybe compare to singing abilities, so which one is better? Whitney or Mariah? Both are equal! Both have emotion, both have great technique, both amazed us all!

If this was based on ten years ago I'd say Whitney every time, but neither of them are at their best now. Whitney's voice was 100 times stronger than Mariah's. Mariah was still amazing though. She used to hit the high notes like a humming bird. In "Believe" Whitney drounds Mariah out. There has never been a singer as good as Whitney. The power in her voice sends chills through me.

There would hardly be anything to compare because Mariah goes as low as G2 and Whitney doesn't go past Eb3. In chest, Whitney stays primarily in the 4th octave while Mariah goes up to G5. In hear, Whitney does not pass E5 whereas Mariah goes up to Eb6 and, obviously, Whitney can't whistle unlike Mariah who went up to D7.

Mariah hasn't blown down the stage in years! It is only on NYE that I've heard her finally starting to sound a bit like her old self. I think she started recovering only this fall. Her voice sounded even more damaged than Whitney's before that for a long time.

I just cannot bare to compare. I love both these beautiful talent ladies of the 80's and 90's. Their powerful vocals can lift up the most depressed human being and make you feel loved and warmth. While Whitney is not known for her songwriting she makes up for it by taking a song and give it soul and emotions.
I am admittedly a Whitney stan but I'm not so lost in her to not acknowledge Mariah. Clearly Mariah has Whitney beat in the higher registers but I think power-wise Whitney takes the cake. Notice I didn't use "back in the day", "mental breakdown", or bash either one. These 2 women are LEGENDARY no matter what!
I'm really not gonna argue but what alot of ppl fail to realize is that mariah has a phenomenal whistle range. but that's a completely different register. her chest voice or mixed/head voice are not as high or powerful as whitney's was. she was great, no denying, but whitney's range surpasses hers when it comes to everything except whistle tone

Both are great. However, range is great technically, but that does'nt mean you are a better musician, it's how you use it. Whitney takes full advantage of her vocal range and almost undisputed power. She sings live to her full potential and with so much grit, soul, passion, and stage presence that she seems almost goddess like. Mariah kills it, especially when she first emerged. It made no sense including whistles because there would be no Whitney notes to compare them to. Also, both Mariah and Whitney's C6 were hit in head voice. They sound different because of the vocal types.

Wow, this is so interesting. I think it's cool that you took the time to make this. I've often wondered who IS the best singer and I guess there's no true answer. And for youngsters who criticize, it's true that as people age, it's nearly impossible to maintain their voice skills at the same levels of their youth. I see no need to call someone "has beens" or to make fun. You'll know when you grow up. Just to have reached the peaks these singers have is to be admired and envied.
I agree. Not only this, the great vocalists(and both of them are), they adjust and sometimes become better because what they make up for in say, range, they make up for what they understand about their voice and vocal phrases accordingly.
MC is near that point and Whit is getting to that point. Whit just to continue to improve her vocal stamina. I can tell that on some performances, her voice still gets tired which is expected. I am just glad they are still doing music.

Her use of melisma is akin to Aretha Franklin, an actual connection to the song's structure and not just ad-libbed all the time. No to mention her timing is great. In short, these women are far from overrated. They are the benchmark to which singers have been held to for the past two decades and more. They deserve all the praise they get.

OMG! What was the name of the song at 1:05? Sounds beautiful! I love mariah! They're both great singers, but their voices arent what they used to be. There would hardly be anything to compare because Mariah goes as low as G2 and Whitney doesn't go past Eb3. In chest, Whitney stays primarily in the 4th octave while Mariah goes up to G5. In hear, Whitney does not pass E5 whereas Mariah goes up to Eb6 and, obviously, Whitney can't whistle unlike Mariah who went up to D7.

Mariah hasn't blown down the stage in years! It is only on NYE that I've heard her finally starting to sound a bit like her old self. I think she started recovering only this fall. Her voice sounded even more damaged than Whitney's before that for a long time.

we all know mariah can still sing. but its not consistent. sometimes when she is in the mood... i dont know, can we call her voice temperemental? but we all know she can. she sang live in the grammys 2006, even in her christmas special in 2004 and 2006 were phenomenal. and now she belts I wanna know what love is. well at least she still sounds good in her records. while whitney...... even in the album versions she sounds weak, almost unrecognizably weak.

I just cannot bare to compare. I love both these beautiful talent ladies of the 80's and 90's. Their powerful vocals can lift up the most depressed human being and make you feel loved and warmth. While Whitney is not known for her songwriting she makes up for it by taking a song and give it soul and emotions.

I'm really not gonna argue but what alot of ppl fail to realize is that mariah has a phenomenal whistle range. but that's a completely different register. her chest voice or mixed/head voice are not as high or powerful as whitney's was. she was great, no denying, but whitney's range surpasses hers when it comes to everything except whistle tone

Mariah goes higher in head voice and obviouslty can whistle. Both are great. However, range is great technically, but that does'nt mean you are a better musician, it's how you use it. Whitney takes full advantage of her vocal range and almost undisputed power. She sings live to her full potential and with so much grit, soul, passion, and stage presence that she seems almost goddess like. Mariah kills it, especially when she first emerged. I thought the damn women was unstopable then. But she changed her image and voice. I guess her voice deteriorated

so she had to sing differently to preserve what was left of her legendary voice. Know she just whispers and whistles. We all know what happened to Whitney. Drugs! However, she still has power, grit, and soul to her voice. She sings with more passion now live and is improving vocally with each performance. Mariah is'nt improving but has been whispering for the past 6 albums and she has no stage presence. Whitney wins because of her live performances: Range is not impressive when your drowned out!

You guys must be tone deaf. Your comparing who's better by range? Are you serious that is only one bonus element of others when it comes to a great singer. What about power, vocal control, and phrasing, not to mention interpretation which Whitney clearly dominates Mariah in. She is also a better stage performer. She is not bland and boring like Mariah but has great stage presence and is a true diva. She clearly entertains you and draws you into her performances, not whispering Mariah!

Wow, this is so interesting. I think it's cool that you took the time to make this. I've often wondered who IS the best singer and I guess there's no true answer. And for youngsters who criticize, it's true that as people age, it's nearly impossible to maintain their voice skills at the same levels of their youth. I see no need to call someone "has beens" or to make fun. You'll know when you grow up. Just to have reached the peaks these singers have is to be admired and envied.

I agree. Not only this, the great vocalists(and both of them are), they adjust and sometimes become better because what they make up for in say, range, they make up for what they understand about their voice and vocal phrases accordingly.
MC is near that point and Whit is getting to that point. Whit just to continue to improve her vocal stamina. I can tell that on some performances, her voice still gets tired which is expected. I am just glad they are still doing music.

And in regards to Mariah, the woman is a stunning musician. Her lyrics, crafting of her phrases, melodies and harmonies are unmatched today in pop music. Her use of melisma is akin to Aretha Franklin, an actual connection to the song's structure and not just ad-libbed all the time. No to mention her timing is great. In short, these women are far from overrated. They are the benchmark to which singers have been held to for the past two decades and more. They deserve all the praise they get.
