and if so at what age should I start checking myself or tell family members to have themselves checked?

Yes, it's true, about 1% of breast cancer occurs in men. And it typically appears in a later stage, because men do not check their breast tissue. You can learn more about it at the Nick Foundation's website. Men, the same as women, should start doing monthly self exams at age 20. The Breast Chek device can also be used to check for testicular cancer starting at age 13.

Well, the beauty of the breast check is that you can do an exam laying down, and the breast tissue spreads out (sorry for the graphic) so it is easier to feel any changes.
