When our soldiers (counting over 300 of my ancestors) left, 94% of them didn't even own slaves, but they went to defend their state. Yes slavery is evil, but the constitution provides that the STATES were to have the power to do away with it. The states entered a voluntary union. Some states chose to leave because they were under represented and over taxed and their soverignty was threatened.

The Emanicapation Proclamation only freed the slaves till the end of the Civil War after that the 14th amendment was put in place and by the mid 19th century it was slavery was illigal in all "Union" states. Lousiana and there by New Orleans was part of the COnfereatcy. Now as to Sherman he my have been northern born but he took to the Mississppi plantation lifestyle before the War. Actually after James K. Polk, the power the president enjoyed was largely decreased, and greatly shifted to congress. At the start of the industrial era, the North saw a population boom. With that, most northern industrialists saw slave labor not as a moral evil, but as an economic disadvantage to working class white males. Most slaves were sold to the southern states. Many were freed, only to be told they could not stay in northern states such as Indiana that banned free men of color...

Over time the discrepancy widened until the southern exports (cotton/tobacco) were sending 70%+ of the revenue to Washington, but the southern states were only recieving roughly 20% in return.
