Dan, I believe this kata is not more than a version of Passai Sho. "Gwa" in Okinawan hogen means "small". Hence... Chan mi gwa. Chan=Kyan, Mi=Me (eye) and Gwa=small. I am of half Okinawan decent. You lived in Okinawa from '68-71? I was there 5 times, from 1969-present, 27 yrs.
This kata was not taught to Chozo Nakama by Motobu. It was handed down from Chibana through Itosu. The kata as presented was not referred to as Motobua Passai. Some claim this kata came from Kyan and the Gwa represented the small eyed Kyan.
This video was taken in my dojo in Jackson, Missisippi in 1975. We hosted a Seibukan meeting for all students of Seibukan. This is the first introduction of Passia Gwua to the Seibukan members. I learned this kata while on Okinawa from 1968 to 1971. Zenpo sensei learned this kata from Chozo Nakama. It did not come from the Kyan lineage but through Chibana from Itosu.
I believe that Passai Guwa is often referred to as Koryu Passai...this is an interesting form. Coming from a karate man of Zenpo Sensei's caliber, you can be assured that it is real. You should check out that Koryu Gojushiho crap I just saw. What a JOKE! Guess that they can't all be like Zenpo Sensei. :-)
I remember practicing this kata under Sensei Harry Thomas many, many years back. "What kind of summer is it?" "Byram Seibukan summer, sensei!"
