CBS "sustained" the Captain for the first two years of the program (beginning on October 3, 1955)- then the series started airing commercials, with sponsors approved ONLY by the Captain [Bob Keeshan] himself {he didn't want to advertise any "war toys", or anything detrimental to his viewers}. He continued
on weekday mornings at 8am(et) from '55 through '81 {and a Saturday edition as well, from 1956 through '68}, then on weekends at 7am(et) through December 1984.
For pro wrestling fans: I think Slim Goodbody's airbrushed "body" suit may have been the inspiration (misguided though it was) for the costume worn by the late Jorge "Giant" Gonzalez in WWF in the mid-90s. Easy to see why this series with the Captain never quite took off. The original series was so much better, and proof positive that a bigger budget and slicker production doesn't necessarily mean "better".
OMG! In the '55 opening I saw the old "hat tree"! I had forgotten about that, he used to put on different hats to act out stories and skits! I loved that so much! Glad my kids got to enjoy the later versions, they loved picture pages and Slim Goodbody.
8. The cast of "One Day At A Time" - Bonnie Franklin (Ann Romano), Mackenzie Phillips (Julie Cooper) Pat Harrington (Dwanye Schneider) and Valerie Bertinelli (Barbara Cooper)
@tyrese3745 Brent Musburger was doing NFL Today at the time. But my favorite long lost Good Morning Captains was the Match Game (Brett, Charles, Richard, Johnny Olsen & Gene Rayburn), complete with Match Game opening.
Starting at 3:02, the new characters played by the cast were, Mr Pennywhistle (Bob), Uncle Backwards (Hugh), Mr. Doodles (with the spinning bowtie; Bob again), and Willy & Wally (Cosmo & Bob respectively).
In addition to Captain Nemo, the new cartoon series included The Toothbrush Family (2:46) and Ludwig.
Good Morning, Captain! This is a wonderful time capsule, containing incredibly raer material, found no where else. The FIRST episode.... The celebrities greeting the Captain....this is how the series is remembered by millions...with a SMILE!
I always thought Bill Cosby did Picture Pages. Never knew the captain also did it.

It was in 1978 when the show made this major format change.
I got to meet Slim Goodbody at my school in the San Francisco area just after he became part of CK.
