Its called a capo :p its a tuning device that allows you to "bar" the fret, making the open strings higher without having to manually fret with your fingers or tune-up the guitar :)

And that's as good as I can explain it =\ they're awesome and yes, very necessary to play this song :p

Good stuff. The trouble I'm having so far is that since there is no guitar transcription that I can find, I'm actually writing my own. But now and then I have issues. Like around 0:20, I can play that, but can't find the bass note he's hitting. (Even with the video reference, it's bizarrely difficult) And the fills he's putting in.... Hard to work out.

And by the way, I think it is actually in Drop D tuning, but it's possible to play in standard tuning. :-)

Yup, positive that that's how he's playing it, though like I said, it is possible as far as I can tell to play in standard tuning with some adjustment as the capo doesn't interfere.

@animaiscool He was playing harmonics. Traditionally harmonics are played with two hands - left hand lightly on the right bar on the fretboard while the right hand plucks the string. Here he is using only one hand. I believe his index finger acts as the left hand and his middle finger acts as the plucking hand.
