Most likely when y'all "released" it into the wild, he actually went back and dug a burrow somewhere on the grounds...rabbits (or really, hares in your case) like to pick a spot to stay in - usually about ½ to a full acre - and then never move. I might start looking for his "house" and leaving toys and treats out nearby when you find it. ;D
Chances are he runs around out front during the afternoon, too; rabbits/hares go out in the early mornings and mid-afternoons when nobody's around, usually.
Releasing a pet into the wild will most likely end up in the pet being eaten or something, cuz the pore thing doesnt know how to live in nature. Releasing pets is cruel!
I found a 4 week old Eastern Cottontail rabbit about a year ago and took her home as I already had other rabbits and kepy her - shes adorable.
Your little guy is actually a hare - biggest difference between rabbits and hares is that rabbits are born blind, deaf and hairless whereas hares are born already able to run etc (they can see, hear and have fur!)
Pity your friend couldnt keep him - rabbits / hares make the best pets! :)
