And when the characters hear weird noises or see something strange happenig they don't just run there to check it out, they actually LOOK scared.
You're totally right about what works in this film, start to finish, they played it out without 'throwing' the monster at you to try and scare you with the monster, but what most people don't know, is that the monster is the single most potent 'scare card' in your arsenal. By tossing it out at the audience (Drag Me to Hell comes to mind, crappy excuse of a movie), it ceases to be scary and the entire movie has instantly failed at it's objective, and resorts to cheap tricks to trick the viewer.

Thank you. All these morons saying that it sucked really should see the 2007 director's cut before making a judgment. I really can't compare it to "Blair Witch" at all but more of the 1963 version of "The Haunting", in which it was able to demonstrate the art of omission a lot better.

I disagree. The whole point of Drag me to Hell was for it to be a guilty pleasure, over the top, and a tribute to horror film in general. Paranormal is not meant to be a parody. They are to completely different styles. I like them both for what they achieve individually.

This movie was just okay. It had its moments, and it effectively dealt with one of the biggest logical faults I had with Blair Witch and Cloverfield, that the protagonists never drop the camera and run. Being in a house the whole time fixes that for the most part, and the majority of the 'action' happens while the camera is stationary. I thought this movie was fine right up until the ending, which you could see the Hollywood studio execs fingerprints all over it.
I definitely agree that the anticipation is what is so captivating. What you don't see is almost always scarier than what you do. An empty hallway in this movie was infinitely more effective than any monster in any movie I've seen in recent years. Good review.
I dont think the point of this movie was to make you think it really happened. Nor do i think its necessary to believe its real for it to be scary. Just saw this movie and really enjoyed it. It wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be (except for the last 20 minutes -- that freaked me out, lol), but I did enjoy it thoroughly. I think people are really exaggerating when they call it "one of the scariest movies of all time" or "one of the WORST movies of all time". It's neither. It's a decent horror flick, in my opinion. I'd recommend it . . . just be ready for a slow, slow start.

Thank you. All these morons saying that it sucked really should see the 2007 director's cut before making a judgment. I really can't compare it to "Blair Witch" at all but more of the 1963 version of "The Haunting", in which it was able to demonstrate the art of omission a lot better.

Drag me to Hell freaked me out, would have been more frightening if Sam Raimi used the same method as Paranormal Activity but still scary nonetheless, what do you think?

I disagree. The whole point of Drag me to Hell was for it to be a guilty pleasure, over the top, and a tribute to horror film in general. Paranormal is not meant to be a parody. They are to completely different styles. I like them both for what they achieve individually.

I don't get horror movies. lol I saw this one and it was sooooo boring, all the time I was thinking this is stupid because they are not moving out of the house. lol And then they move into the house after leaving it lol that was the funniest part.

This movie was just okay. It had its moments, and it effectively dealt with one of the biggest logical faults I had with Blair Witch and Cloverfield, that the protagonists never drop the camera and run. Being in a house the whole time fixes that for the most part, and the majority of the 'action' happens while the camera is stationary. I thought this movie was fine right up until the ending, which you could see the Hollywood studio execs fingerprints all over it.

I definitely agree that the anticipation is what is so captivating. What you don't see is almost always scarier than what you do. An empty hallway in this movie was infinitely more effective than any monster in any movie I've seen in recent years. Good review.

I dont think the point of this movie was to make you think it really happened. Nor do i think its necessary to believe its real for it to be scary. You can go into movie knowing full well that its pure fiction and still have a frightening experience. One of the scariest movies ive ever seen. Youre pretty cute.

using unknown actors makes the movie more realistic and scary. Psychological we can relate ourselves to them, we can put ourselves into their own situation much easier than into those Hollywood Freaky. That is why we are scared. I am not sure if I am gonna see it.

Just saw this movie and really enjoyed it. It wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be (except for the last 20 minutes -- that freaked me out, lol), but I did enjoy it thoroughly. I think people are really exaggerating when they call it "one of the scariest movies of all time" or "one of the WORST movies of all time". It's neither. It's a decent horror flick, in my opinion. I'd recommend it . . . just be ready for a slow, slow start.

I played the Ouija board about 3 months ago. I had a bad experience the next morning....I saw my computer chair move backwards without a physical force. I usually do not believe in this stuff...But now I dont know. I have been paranoid the last few months.
Paranormal activity would freak me out too much.
