Taking on the role of Mabel epitomized the term "Actor", in every sense of the word. How many "actors" would dare take on a role like this and pull it off as well as Ms. Rowlands? I dare say a scant few, unfortunately.
Peter Falk from Ossining NY, my hometown whoot whoot!! anyway, AMAZING movie!! THIS is raw craziness, how did angelica Jolie win an Oscar for her mediocre-in-comparison portrayal of a crazy person and Gena Rowlands did not win one for this?? ridiculus
An intense, complex, energetic, enthusiastic, artistic character who is very intelligent. She is not "crazy" or psychotic. She is responding to not fully understanding her strengths and for being misunderstood; and judged and treated harshly because of the ignornance of others, who are understandably overwhelmed by her intensity. Online check out Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintergration and Overexcitablities; and Gifted Adults and the book "Living with Intensity"
...people who like darkness, people who like watching Mad Men for the nostalgia of "how we used to think/smoke/drink," people who liked to go to college lit. and discuss what they read, feminists, people who liked The Yellow Wallpaper

Gena Rowlands, one of the finest actresses ever to grace the screen. I am only 25 years old, and the more i back track and watch Gena the more i love her..
John Cassavetes' true masterpiece. Gena Rowlands (his wife) and Peter Falk gave out some knock-out performances as Rowalnds was nomiated for Best Actress at the Oscars as well Cassavetes was nomiated for Best Director. Very heart-warming and enjoyable for a Cassavetes fan. :) His best since SHADOWS.
i haven't seen this film and this trailer was terrible. all i know is that its supposed to be an art film and a woman is having emotional/psychological troubles and alcohol is involved

I don't understand why he's so highly regarded though. I mean I like all his stuff a lot but he's no fuckin' Robert Altman or nothin'. I liked The Killing of a Chinese Bookie a lot and Gloria was really good but he's No. 14 on the greatest directors of all time an I'm like WTF? I love him as an actor, in that respect he's brilliant, but I think even Brando was a better director actor than him.
@boelina wow thats great, i saw this movie just recently and im 15, its the greatest role for a women in all movie history even to this day! my biggest dream is to be a script supervisor, congrats on making it to the bussines!
Love this film. One of my favorites right up there with Monster Squad and American Movie. Not sure I agree with Cassavettes being the most visionary directer ever, though.
Masterpiece!

great movie...lots of improvisations which it makes it more beautiful to watch.

Even though non of it is improvised :\
If you are talking improvisation for the delivery, you'd be right.
