The tenor at York is not the heaviest bell rung in the country. Emmanuel at Liverpool is the heaviest bell rung full circle in a change ringing peal - not just in the country but in the world.
@lunaticonthegrass111 I am assuming this is correct as I have read it during my research. I`m sure some of our bell ringers who have read the post will correct me if I am wrong.
It's no longer a chime, its a carillon now. The first one in the uk for years and years. i'm sure someone more qualified than me will know when the last carillon was built in the uk.
I am planning on recording the bells at my Church at Glemsford, and posting it here - I will be ringing there tonight as Monday is our practice night.
The heaviest bell in Glemsford church is 1400 weight, the heaviest bell in Suffolk is in St. Peter & St. Paul Church in Clare - its quite hard to pull, its very hard work at 2800weight. To ring at Westminster Abbey or York Minster would be so great, my aim at the moment is to ring a peel at St. Mary-le-Tower, in Ipswich Suffolk's county town. St. Mary-le-Tower has 12 bells.
We use the imperial way of weighing bells. This is known as hundredweights.
As with kilograms you would say "29kg". In ndredweight you would phrase it as " The tenor at Glemsford is 14cwt and not 1400 weight. This is a mistake I made aswell.
The bells are quite old at Glemsford. How well do they handle?
Thank you for clarifying the terminology used for the weights, I've been confused for sometime. Well I am only a learner and still learning to handle the second bell. They handle very well, and are smooth to ring. Yes, the bells are old, most of them were cast around 1659. The main church has been dated at about mid-14th Century, I've heard that the tower was rebuilt in the 19th Century.
A peal of six of similar weight used to hang in my home tower but were replaced by a lighter eight.
Stick with it. It's a marvelous musical and mathematical ocupation and as you improve, you will realise how "required" you will be, as well as how much you like it.
ringing a peal at St Mary le Tower is a fantastic thing to aim for - I've rung 3 there, it is a brilliant sound when the ringing is good. Good luck with your aim! Also, the heaviest bell in Suffolk is at SMLT, not Clare - SMLT tenor is 35cwt.
I am bell ringer, I ring at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Glemsford, in Suffolk - about 60 miles from London. Our church is far smaller than York Mnster of course, but we have six good bells, and I've even been shown upn into the bell chamber by my tower captain. I am learning to control the 2nd bell, but ringing bells is very rewarding, the sound is fantastic and the effort although strenious on the more heavy bells brings sense of acheivemen.
I have rung here to clarify theres 14 change ringing bells a ring of 12 and 2 others a flat sixth and sharp second I think cannot remember.
Theres also a chime of 11 bells hung above these and played from a clavier in the ringing chamber.
Theres a mini model ring of 6 bells on a table in the ringing room too.
In the North tower is the great peter bell which is tolled on sundays and also has a clock hammer. Finally 6 other bells which strike the quarters which were fitted in 2000.
I think you may be referring to the clipped video I sometimes see. Video compressed to the middle of the screen.
Most times I view this it is ok. The odd time .. no.. If anybody can help with this I would appreciate it. This footage was taken with a JVC GR-DVX An old model by todays standards with no digi output and a high gain on the analoge outputs via composite and svideo Im thinking of starting again and re-edit a lot of videos through a video/audio mixer I have.
it would be interesting to hear all 32 bells being rung at once though, dont you think. I went to York recently after coming back from amsterdam (look at me video), and i heard the 6 queen mother bells and great peter being rung. It was a gorgeous sound. I hope I can go and ring there one day... (*sighs*)
this sound brings joy to my soul!!! i lived in York for a year and every sunday i'd be so happy to hear this! thanx for recording so much! :D

When you say 'heaviest bell still rung by hand' are you refering to Great Peter, which weighs in at about 10 tons?

Our tower captain is going to allow us to go on top of the tower, although there isn't much of a view, our tower is only small.

@louisisyourgod When you say SMLT, I think you mean St Mary LYDIARD TREGOZE - I always refer to it as LT!!
Of course, you mean St Mary le Tower, dont you...

Flat 6th and extra treble make up the 14 ringing bells. 11 bell carillion has just been extended to 3 octaves (approx 35 bells) above the ringin peal
PaulAardvark 3 years ago
I mean't extra treble and yeah I know about the 24 new bells. :) seen em lol.
