  • very saddening event my heart always saddens when seeing this video

  • socide mission

  • What Music is that?

  • GOD BLESS THEIR SPRITE IN HIS HEAVEN

  • a day i will never forget

  • I have the newspaper of when challenger exploded

  • AnyWay Reagan Ingroned The State Of The Union To Make A Special Speech On Behalf The Fallen Astronauts

  • President Reagan Pressured NASA to launch even though the cold temps were a safety violation.

  • Reagan had nothing to do with it. NASA mgt. pressured booster engineers to launch which they recommended not to.

  • Yes, but the management was pressured by Reagan

  • dramatic much!

  • IIRC the song is "NASA strikes!" from the soundtrack of "Conspiracy theory" (1997). Sorry, but I find it a bit weird to choose that particular song for this video ...

  • Yes, On The Beat Of The Music From The Top View You Could See The Whole Shuttle Lean Forward, :S

  • First of All, The Music Creeps Me out

Secondly, The Way The Shuttle Launched Didnt Look Right It Launched In A Forward Up Motion

and Thirdly, It Shook Quite Violently Before Launch Which May Have Damaged The Bosster Ring Further..

Very Sad, but please no more creepy music, :S

  • That forward movement with respect to the fixed service structure is normal.

I'm not a rocket science, so I may not be exactly right on this point, but I think it has to do with the fact that the center line of the vehicle is not its center of gravity.

To hold it all in equilibrium, they can't point the main engines straight down. The thrust has to be angled a little bit TOWARD the external tank--hence the drift in that direction.

  • The main engines don't point directly downward, they point off to the side. The slight shift is normal.

  • Ron McNair was Good to Go - RIP all of the members abord!

  • Sadest video Ive ever seen. And the worlds most expensive rocket with people in it. They could just aswell waited for new years eve.

  • Just a slight notation. I know this footage comes form the official NASA documentary about the accident, however the clip from 00:48-:50 as it lurches while the main engines throttle up on the pad before lift-off is actually from STS-6, the first Challenger launch in 1983, not 51-L in 1986. The lack of the black markings on the SRB nose cones that started in 1984 gives it away, also the lighting from STS-6 being an afternoon, not a morning launch.

  • watch the whole launch, all of this footage is from STS 51L

  • NO it is NOT! I have seen this video over and over and I have seen every replay of every camera from 51-L over the last 20 years. A couple clips are from other Challenger launches edited in. Look in this film at the nose cones on the SRB's at :48-:50 compared to 2:25-2:28 or 2;36-2:39
