With respect to the hip hop comment below, isn't it interesting to think that the early Stravinsky -- Rite of Spring, for example -- was doing with the use of percussion, and tempo and ostinati, everything that "hip hop" does to reduce the music it derives from. But Stravinsky was doing it better, smarter and with greater consciousness than hip hop. And he was doing it about 100 years before hip hop began.
@RediForKing You are probably right. I certainly like Stravinsky more than Hip Hop. But I am trying to convince those who love Hip Hop to give guys like Stravinsky a listen. Maybe that's a pipe dream, but I'm trying to encourage everyone to "get along" and realize that music one great big candy mountain, and our interests are more alike than they are different. And remember, with a work like the Ebony Concerto, Stravinsky tried to bring the popular music of his day into "Classical Music."

You mean to tell me this ain't WOCKA FLOCKA FLAME & GUCCI MANE????!!!!
WHERE THAT BE? WHO THAT WUZ? WHAT IT AINT FOR? WUZ UP CUZ?
Hip Hop is REAL music??!!
Our government want's us to think so. If we listen to this we will have a need to be "cultured" and therefore creating intelligent entrepreneurs who generate cash for themselves & our country. But the "powers" would rather cut spending in education, dumbing us down to create future "worker bees."
Der Komentar von Lorenzo Lassek ist sehr lustig! Denkt er, wenn der violinspieler nicht gut spielt klingt er vie eine Bratsche? That is a good "Viola Joke". I must remember that one.....
So playful and inventive! The complications are even more appropriate today. It's like a fine wine, as it gets better with age. It shows me that todays composers are
trying to hard. New, complicated compositions sometimes come off sounding confound and labored. Pulcinella Suite is naturally perfect. Like a living creature!
Excellent performance. This work should be performed more often. The oboist is outstanding, having a great control of his instrument. Controlling the low notes, esp on an exposed solo, is very tricky. Excellent. job.
@valadyr2 The story of how Stravinsky came to write this is pretty different from the Rite of Spring story. This was mostly based on someone else's tunes, so it has a much more mellow feel. (Honestly, I'm not sure I would ever guess this is Stravinsky. I still love it, though...)
i don't know about oboe but for strings, a lot of expressive movements are actually taught. if you notice violin players moving similarly to one another. so i'm thinking it is same for oboe, perhaps to change the dynamics and such. if you notice the guy heads down most of the time for pick up notes, reducing the projection.
devilexi:Lo conosci?
Actually it's by a few composers, the sinfonia at the beginning is by domenico gallo, from the first movement of a trio sonata for 2 violins and cello. But it was stravinski who got it wrong, he attributed them all to pergolesi. Numpty. Still, this is ace
i make an excuse but pergolesi is like the fathere of the pre-neoclasical is not neoclasical in real but of course is the beginingopf the beginin. pergolesi dies at 26 he became so popilar so the editors transforoming the repertoty of others artist in his ow. grretings from venezuela.
the second movement sounds very much like Hedwig's theme in harry potter!

@RolandRiopelle With all respect to you and your comment I think any comparison of Stravinsky with hip hop is kind of an offence to Stravisnky

One of Stravinsky's neoclassical works! He began to simplify his style more and more after his earlier interaction with Satie.
Did you know that Stravinsky actually found the music of the 18h century quite attractive? He adored minuets and the sonata format of the time.
Yay for Stravinsky! =)
