I think it's a contrail and you can see the sun is setting or rising and since it';s high in the sky the sun is reflecting off the contrail. We see this all the time in Seattle. When the sun is setting.

i saw one of these on a wed. night at about 9pm with my girlfriend, she lives close to a lockheed martin complex. and this guy came out from behind her building and just watched it with us, and were the only ones in the parking lot at the time. he was dressed in a drab green shirt and camo pants. i took a picture of the missile with my phone and he looked really pissed i was doing so but he didnt do anything. he just kept looking at my phone and saying hugh and then walked away.

It's not fire. it's the exhaust and the reason that it looks like it's glowing is because this was probably right after dusk and the missle is so high up in the atmosphere that the suns rays are actually hitting it. I live in LA and was fooled by a similar test. i filmed it and all, but after some research I found out the answer.

This is just a piece of asteroid travelling through the atmosphere and because of the impact with Oxygen it burned leaving a long trail behind it.

This happens very often on our planet.

Oh, but I can't quite explain why the trail is glowing, unless it's like those high-altitude clouds we've been seeing (noctilucent clouds at the edge of space) - i.e. my theory being that the aircraft is high enough that the trails are lit by the sun.

I unfortunately reckon it could be something like a ramjet... And the 'break' in the line of trails is when it turns through what appears to be 90 degrees. If it is going Mach 3 to 5 (or so) then the aircraft or pilot might not be able to withstand the strain of that turn at those speeds - so the ramjets turned off, the aircraft makes its turn, and then re-engages the jet which would explain that sudden 'pulse' or 'puff' you see... That'd be my guess at least :-)

Hum....The trail of light is created by a corona discharge...electrons. I know this process. The serpent effect may be caused by the discharge inducing ionisation of particles. It could be something that was launched like someone said. My guess is this is man-made. It looks like some type of rocket, from afar. but still quite interesting.

Wow, that's crazy. Why the hell did it glow so bright for so long? Also, it seemed to come up from the ground, rather than from the sky... although hard to tell exactly. Obviously, the illuminated haze wasn't in space, since it was blown by the wind.
