  • That landing from dismond from silivas, she just stick it cold, Elena she so butch on beam when she did the twisting Korbut she just shakes the whole beam she such a man

  • I still cannot understand how Omelianchik did not make the 1988 Olympic team. Yes she was slightly past her absolute prime of 1985-6 but come on! How could they not include her!

  • It is great seeing all the high scores. I didn't start watching gymnastics regularly until 1990 when Kimbo and Shannon started competing. I watched some of Brandy Johnson's and MLR but not as much.

  • I don't know if it's just me, but with the way they were handing out 10s in this competition it just seems like it completely took away the excitement of someone scoring a 10. All of the 10s given were for great routines but some of them had way obvious errors. I would feel weird scoring a 10 if I took a step or had an obvious mistake.

  • Daniela is lucky that with that horrid mistake on bars the judges didn't give her a 10.

  • This commentator is so odd. He doesn't seem to be at all excited by Oksana doing a triple twist punch front when, if i'm correct, that is the first time that had EVER been done. He was so wrapped up in Dobre he couldn't see how amazing a lot of the other gymnasts were.

  • @nicksline yea, he was doing a bit too much w Dobre

  • @nicksline - like he couldnt see the split legs in form on vault for Dobre and Silivas? "beautiful" "beautiful",

  • The poignancy of Aurelia Dobre's gymnastics is undisputable. Complex and difficult gymnastics that didn't compromise artistry. She had to be absolutely perfect because Shushunova and Silivas, in some instances, were not as stringently scored.

Case in point, Shushunova and Dobre both scored 9.925 on BB! Dobre was significantly better. In my opinion, Dobre 9.95 and Shushunova 9.85.

  • It annoys me that the Romanian girls didn't get bras, when they clearly needed them.

It is bad for the delicate tissue to do that kind physical exercise unsupported.

  • I think that Silivas was even moe upset by Dobre than Shushunova, she had to be supportive of her team mate but she wanted that AA title, she was overtaken by two gymnasts not just one and was also overshadowed by the "pretty, more graceful and talented" Aurelia Dobre.

  • The aesthetics' of it all drove me wild.

I'm not even convinced Dobre was better than Silivas or Shushunova.

She never beat them at their best.

Shushunova was frazzled by the weight of the Soviet team, being the defending world champion, and losing the team title.

Silivas was marred with bad carry-over and big errors on beam and bars.

I don't think Dobre would have beat either one of them at the top of there game.

  • Dobre only had this competition to prove that she can win, and she did. after that she got injured and that was the end, unfortunately. a sad end of a career at 15-16. she was a great gymnast and the other two were great too, but they had mistakes and nobody else was responsible for that but them. so why can't we enjoy it?

  • I agree. But she still won only through the faults of Silivas and Shushunova. Had both of them gone through cleanly, Dobre would have had the bronze.

Silivas fell on the beam for crying out loud! caught her foot on the bar, bobbled on the beam again and had other mistakes and yet still took bronze. Dobre got lucky, plain and simple.

  • I agree ... John Taylor talks as though nobody was graceful on beam before..Dobre was good, have difficulty but nothing was new.. Silivas was more exciting to watch on beam, even with errors.. Was she not graceful, did she not use the beam fluidly etc?

  • Dobre was good, and fluid yes. But I felt as though she almost looked mushy in the legs. That tension and snap of the legs in layouts made Silivas a more interesting, and imo, better beam-worker. Shushunova wasn't built for beam but even she was more than capable of being fluid on it.

  • I don't think Silivas ever looked so powerful on vault again. Maybe her 1989 Europeans AA vault-I could see she's nailed the landing and scored a 9.9775 but it was shown in slow motion so it's hard to compare.

  • Hey at least John Taylor isn't John Tesh, ya know what I mean? :P

  • It's wonderful that we can now enjoy other nations' coverage of this meet. The ABC coverage was awful and anticlimactic as they only chose to broadcast the event finals bypassing the team and all-around competitions altogether.

  • I don't even REMEMBER the 1987 World Championships-my first memory of Daniela Silivas is at Seoul 1988. I must've somehow missed whatever lame coverage ABC had. And you are right-thank goodness we can see other nation's coverage-my favorite is the Australian coverage.

  • i dont care about the 10's!! that competition was one of the best ever!!! i wish i can see more competitions like that. floor is not the same anymore and beam sucks these days!! i wish i can see a mix of the 80's and 90's nowdays!! Grandi needs to quit!

  • A lot of the 10s were not deserved.

  • Guess the commentator was busy cleaning his nails when Silivas has that big form break as she kips to handstand (prior to Deltchev error). And what's up with Shoushounova's haircut. Did she get drunk (vodka) and cut it with garden clippers?

  • I giggled when I read your comments 'cos you're quite right. John Taylor has made so many errors over the years - but he's not the worst yet. And as for Shoushounova's hair - yup, it was the 80s, what can I say? She wasn't the only one with bad hair in the 80s. LOL :)

  • thank you for posting this. i still like the gymnastics in those old days more than todays! there were more artistic and fun to watch. i would give you ten on this, but i'm allowed only five! :)

  • A note to the commentator: Shushunova's "Korbut with twist" is called a Rulfova. :o)

  • I doubt he'll be reading this :)

  • There were a lot of 10s but it was one of the best world champs ever!

  • "thank you for showing up. here's a 10."

  • i know! a few too many 10's i think! great comp though!
