  • great video

  • who'd win in a tt: fabian cancellara or lance armstrong in his prime???

  • LOL, you can see who the class of the TT were those years! Not a huge win with 25 seconds, but then the gaps explode.

  • To all you non supporters stop watching video of Lance if you hate him. You try to prove with words that tests themselves could not prove. Lance won due to the facts of trainingonly for the tour, the only rider who had a team built around him, and upon his return in 99' he had dropped the weight so his power to weight ratio was better than in the past. So now he could climd and improved on his already better than most TT time.

  • 3:05 The car is trying to draft off of Lance!

  • @Fujin95 Then the car got DQ'ed! Or fined in seconds. No drafting in time trialing! ;D

  • How DOES he do it?

    He must be SUPER-HUMAN!

  • would have loved to see the 2000's lance vs cancellara's "motor"

  • Hardcore, makes me want to ride!

  • Some statistics for comparison (details of course geography and equipment differences set aside):

    Chris Boardman 55.152 km.h 7.2 km 1994

    Dave Zabriskie 54.676 km/h 19 km. 2005 fastest average speed ever ...

    Greg LeMond 54.545 km/h 24 km. 1989 - previous record

    Lance Armstrong 53.986 km/h 58.5 km 2000

    Interesting aside:

    Gewiss Team 54.930 kph 67km - 1995

Hope this provides some interesting facts for comparison and discussion.

  • I don't like the tone of the commentary at 3:27 saying, "if it was not for Greg LeMond's time trial back in 1989 this would be the fastest time trial in history."

As if to say, "If that damn Greg LeMond had not duelled in the most amazing and incredible time trial to recoup a 50 second deficit and win by 8 seconds against a determined Laurent Fignon, Lance's time trial would be the fastest..."

BUT others were close to Lance, no one was as close to LeMond's time, when the handlebars were used.

  • Ullrich always looses a lot in the early stages of time trials and then either keeps the same deficit or actually gets time back on whoever is leading. That's pretty much how his tours and seasons in general went, start slow, then build up, but falling short one too many times, even though he won a tour, a vuelta, the olympics in 2000, a couple World TT champs, been a German champion several times, won stages in all three GT's, etc. It's amazing, cause many of us consider him an underachiever!

  • 2:24 when Ullrich pats Bellochi on the back. He does a double take like where the hell did you come from lol

  • The best cyclist the world has ever seen!!!!!

  • @MrCraiguss How about Eddy Merckx??? Even Armstrong would say he's the best.

  • @runningonice1 Try eddy rocks!!!

  • @MrCraiguss Mr. eddy can compete with lance.

  • How could he average of 54km/h, when the winners in Tour of California averaged on 48km/h today, and that was only 33km. Like.. Really? That's more than 10% faster. Was this TT downhill?

  • My best avg. is 43km/h on a 40km course... I have along way to go!

  • I find that quite impressive :P but u dun know how fast u would go on this course, u might have gone faster!

  • @mattepolaco -------- 26.7mph........... you don't have a long way to go, son, you need to simply hang up your dreams and sell your bike. Your "best avg. speed" is nothing short of pedestrian... Maybe try kite surfing. I hear its a killer rush!

  • @conceivably That's harsh. Don't feel bad Matte. Though as a junior cyclist I am sub-hour pace. I'd like to see you do better.

  • Damn, that Alfa is well in the slipstream, and still can't make it...what a speed!!!

  • its so funny how everyone gets carried away with doping... just enjoy the sport for what it is and try not to let doping detract from it.

  • this is where is so evident the EPO era:

9 years later where many improvements in bikes equipment, skin suits, training, etc. have been made and Cancellara cannot even brake the 51 kph mark in a ITT- and LA did it back then-why?

perhaps EPO/CERA is now being tested for......

  • There is still undetectable EPO or sometimes detectable only in a shot time window if microdose are used.

But blood monitoring limits the amount of hematocrit variation allowed so limit doping. Of course autologus blood transfusion can still be used as we can see with Lance's 2009 TDF blood values. In 2009 Lance had just 45% as hematocrit max despite recording 49% in the last week of 99 - 2005 TDF. A clear sign of doping with EPO or blood transfusion

  • why? because lance was better at that point. Bottom Line

  • Levi did an average speed of 53.1 KPH in a 55 KM ITT in 2007.

  • @hufemeve This is a ridiculous assumption that doesn't take into account: 1. This is a point to point course, 2. Elevation (absence of climbs, downhills, etc...) 3. weather conditions. Having an aiding tailwind can bump you several miles an hour faster than in still conditions (on a point to point course). This year at the Boston Marathon, there was a massive tailwind that helped the leaders run the fastest marathon in history. Think before making such serious accusations.

  • Greg LeMond's VO2 is 92.5 or so ... and Lance's is about 85 ... could that account for the .5 kilometer difference in time trial speeds?

If the distance was only 24 km as it was for LeMond's 1989 race, could Lance have gone any faster?

Its not a question of endurance or distance, its a question of being able to push against the headwind .5 km an hour faster.

  • Lemond's ITT record was done on a downhill ITT Versailles is 100m higher than Champs-Elysees.

Many riders set their fastest ITT that day.

  • @nightowl8936, Its a question of increased strength. Nuff said.

  • Lance é simplesmente fantástico!!

  • Amazing!!!

  • LANCE 1, merkcx 2, hinault 3,indurain 4.

  • number of podiums and wins in Tour, Giro and Vuelta:

    Merckx: 12 podiums (11 wins)

    Hinault: 12 podiums (10 wins)

    Anquetil: 13 podiums (8 wins)

    Indurain: 9 podiums (7 wins)

    Armstrong: 8 podiums (7 wins)

  • Hinault: 12 podiums (10 wins)

I dunno ... I felt that Hinault's last Tour de France win was largely undeserved, because LeMond gave up his very sure chances to take it for Hinault, and then the royal screw around the next year by Hinault.

LeMond should be noted for behind unselfish, yet gracious during his time as a cyclist. Also, though people focus on Lance Armstrong overcoming cancer, Lemond has shotgun pellets in his heart and body from the hunting accident, and managed to win still.

  • @nightowl8936 Lmao, are you really comparing almost dying from cancer, being given a less than 10% survival chance and the huge damage chemotherapy does to the body (coupled with the near impossible task of returning to fitness, never mind winning 7 tours) to having pellets lodged in the heart? Lemond was an awesome rider, I seem to remember he only had 1 kidney.... but comparing his shotgun injury to cancer is utterly ridiculous.

  • bmk139 ... you obviously want to exalt Lance Armstrong and thats fine.

All I am saying is that other men have suffered misfortune in their cycling careers who are also notable for their character and clean drug tests.

I believe LeMond when he says he could have won 5 tours had some circumstances worked out differently, such as the treachery of Bernard Hinault, and the hunting accident and so on.

Remember: 92.5 VO2 Max is the 2nd highest ever recorded. Better than any other cyclist!

  • @nightowl8936 Yup, totally agree Greg could have won 5 tours, and back in the day he was the rider that inspired me to take up bike racing.

But remember too that, in spite of all the bitterness and presumption that Armstrong doped, he has never once failed a drug test, and that is despite being the most tested rider in 'Le Tours' history.

As for VO2 max, it really doesn't tell the whole story, but yeah Greg's was even higher than Indurain's.

  • Eddy Merckx is the greatest, then Bernard Hinault and in third place Lance.

  • You should learn to deal with something:

Who is the greatest cyclist of all time?

    Hinault: "Merkcx"

    Indurain: "Merckx"

    Armstrong: "Merckx"

    UCI: "Merckx"

    Merckx: "I don t know".

    Any questions?

Even Lance himself considers Eddy the GOAT in cycling.

  • Where are Lance´s Giros and Vueltas?

  • I rather have 7 straight TDF, that is unimaginable for any one man. Thats what makes Lance the greatest cyclist of all time, and its not like he was going against lightweight,s Jans Ullrich was doping to boot!

  • "I rather have 7 straight TDF"

It really is a unique achievement ... that will cement Lance's place in history, especially after overcoming cancer.

BUT lets not forget that Eddy Merkx's chances for a 6th Tour victory was cut short by some French asshole that punched him while he was riding his bike.

Shows what kind of people the French are. Narcisstic and self-centered.

But Merckx won many other single-stage day races in addition to the Tour de France, in a given year.

    Unmatched!

  • I agree with nightowl, some French riders (not all) are complete dickheads. Especially the reporters that went through Lance's rubbish in broad daylight and constantly doubted him. They should have stopped accusing him with no evidence and waited for concrete evidence. Even now there isn't even a shred of evidence against Lance.

  • "French riders (not all) are complete dickheads."

A quick minor amendment. My comment about Merckx being punched by a French person .... it was a French FAN, not a fellow cyclist that did that.

If someone had done something like that to Armstrong in this day and age, it would probably be an international incident.

We can only speculate about what would have happened had Merckx been able to continue. He was so dominant in his day.

I wonder what anomalies Merckx has to be so good.

  • Let me also add that I think Laurent Fignon gave all of us a classic Tour de France rivalry for the ages ... in the 1989 Tour ... vs. Greg LeMond ...

Even though he lost by 8 seconds, I truly believe he was the better rider in that tour, and he likely would have won had the equipment advantage not played a role with the first use of the clip on bars.

Still, it was a nail biter, right up to the last 8 seconds! Fignon embodies the best qualities of the French cyclist.

  • Maybe you have not sought enough, but there is alot of clues and circumstancial evidences like legal testimonies, and 6 EPO samples.

Just google velocitynation and Ashenden to read more about it

  • Circumstantial evidence and guilt by association is not enough to completely doubt someone like the French press have been doing. I feel sorry for you. I'm sorry you can't dream. I'm sorry you can't believe that maybe, just maybe, someone can beat everyone else. You, sir, are an idiot.

  • You are dreaming... but the reality say he doped as do his recent blood values.

    Keep dreaming in Santa Claus.

  • Like I said: you, sir, are an idiot. Maybe he trains harder than everyone else. Maybe he has better than average cycling techniques. Maybe he eats better than everyone else. Someone has to be the best. The fact that he is not European does not mean he is a doper. Maybe he wants it more than everyone else and has the resources, time and motivation to reach his goals. I personally think it's an admirable quality to keep coming back after everything he's been through. Enjoy your seizure.

  • No one is perfect. American were able to elect 2 times GWB and supported his lies even against those arrogant French who were finalyy saying the truth.

    Idiot are equally represented everywhere.

And Merckx was not so seriously damaged by that incident.

  • In the words of Phil Ligget "If you can win the tour 7 times in a row you need not win anything else"

  • I don´t agree

  • Well i don't see you commentating international cycling for a living so you don't need to agree.

  • I don´t agree and is not true. Tour de France is the biggest by far, but a guy who wins less Tours but also Giros, Vueltas, one-week races, classics, etc is a bigger champion than the guy who focuses 98% on Tour. I hope Contador will not stop doing 2 three-weeks races each year.

  • just like hes been executed the past 7 tours hes won???hahah all u guys are just hilarious your a bunch of haterssss...if lance was french or german etc. than u guys would loveeeee himmm...your just mad that he goes over there and kicks everyones ass =)

  • I would still dislike him for the fact that he is a complete asshole who would even stab his own mother for another Tour win...

  • And then spend his own, precious time helping the cause against cancer and being an inspiration to millions. What a loser.

  • Amen!

  • my friend has lance armstrongs feed bag from the tour down under

  • spinning out an 11 @ 36mph? Must have been wearing a parachute.

  • deem this video is very clean, wow u can even see the numbers there. nice

  • So God is spending his time with LeMond, or is it true that LeMond is God as he contends. No tailwind is that huge. Think, that you might be wrong.

  • Having all those vehicles distanced around you makes you go slightly quicker but cow heamoglobin, epo, heamopure, oxyglobin, make a big difference... Actovin racing is like Nascar. Go Jeff Gordon go!! Watch that Dupont Chevy go!!!

  • Good god man if you don't like Lance Armstrong then why do I find your comments on every video of his I look at

  • @tuber8440 I LOVE THIS COMMENT!!!

  • I am convinced you do not know what the fuck you are talking about.

  • You have great knowledge when it comes to NASCAR too! Wow!

Nascar is a joke in international raceing...F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport engineering, I guess that's why America has no part in it.

  • HAHA!!!!

I love it! Everyone always hates the best player. America is the best player worldwide.

All major technological advances come from america. Orther countries simply bench mark them .

    Air Plane

    Personal Computer

    Telephone

    Automobile

    Computer Operating Systems

The list goes on....not to mention all the of military technology (stealth etc.) .

    F1....lol!!!!

  • The Telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell... a Canadian!

The automobile was invented by the Germans.

Stealth technology was first described and mapped out by Soviet scientists.

Why can't you figure out health care? You'll spend countless billions on bomber technology, while allowing many Americans suffer through shortened lives because they can't afford health insurance. Americas priorities are a joke. Every time I visit there I feel like I've gone back in time 15 years! Nascar..lol

  • Like I said.....everyone hates the best player.

    BTW

1.) The first automobile was 1894, made by Ransom E. Olds. USA.

2.) The patent for the telephone was granted to Alexander Graham Bell on March 7th 1876, at that time he resided in Salem, Massachusetts....USA

Furthermore... the USA is made up of immigrants! You know that right?

That is what makes this country so great. We get the best from all of the countries!

Stay at home. We love our diverse, progressive country and wont miss you :) !!!

  • 1st automobile- Nicolas Joseph Cugnat in 1769.

(you're only off by 125yrs there!)

    2nd-Bell was Canadian!

3rd Canada is far more ethnically diverse and welcoming than the U.S.A. is! (I've never felt less welcome in a country than I have in the U.S! Apparently because all Canadians are terrorists according to your progressive citizens!)

Why don't you go start another progressive war against an undeserving nation?

    Wake up!

  • : ) Your animosity flatters me...

    Have a good day!

  • How do you know how to spell animosity??

    Americans arn't usually that smart!

  • "aren't "you supposed to spell correctly if you're criticising people for their intellect?cabbage-head

  • You search out Youtube comments several months old for typos?

    Winner!

  • @f1nuts and what have you done with your life? i see you complaining but providing zero ways to fix it.

  • Check the phone, automobile, which operating system? are you kidding? LOL you are ignorant. Wikipedia, try it out.

  • I guess I must be on drugs the other day spinning out the 11 at 36 mph yesterday downhill with a tailwind.

  • No you are just a joke. For how many KM's.? I could do that towing my 4 yr old if the slope is steep enough. The course you mention for LeMond was not 18KM all down hill. If you have ever ridden bad tarmac you know the drag. The roads in Paris are horrible. So it was all down hill on fresh asphalt? No LeMond is a jealous sad little human. Look up Trek's lawsuit on him. He is a thief as well as a jealous, pathetic has been. Are you related to LeMond, it would explain so much.

  • wha? Your coo-coo!

  • Haha you can't spin out an 11 at 36 mph it's impossible unless you have like a 49 (a compact in the front). You're either lying or you using the wrong term. Riding along at a steady tempo of 36 mph isn't what you would call "spinning out." Spinning out is when your cadence gets out of hand, like about 110-115. Either way your kinda a loser

  • Well I wasnt like sprinting.... LOL I was about 95-100 RPM. I TT around 85.

  • Amazing average speed of 53 kph! Lance is the best TT perhaps ever!

  • LMAO the car is drafting armstrong.

  • Your full of crap. Do you know how many race officials were watching to make sure that did not happen? Besides-----The car travels BEHIND the rider. Maybe physics work differently in your land of make believe!

  • I was being sarcastic. Calm down, i study yr12 physics and i know it more than you do. Learn to understand a joke buddy.

Or maybe at your age that might be quite hard.

  • Well then, Professor, if you were really so, you wouldn't be talking like that. You would be a bit more mature in your reply just like you were now.

  • yo man. why don't you both go for a ride with me. however "smart" you may be, it ain't physics that one is thinking of in a race.

btw you guys are wussies. talking smack like a bunch of little school girls.

  • not about physics! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa

HOW MANY hours did he spend in the wind tunnel working on that killer position that allowed him to ride that incredible time trial?????

  • how many hours did eddy merckx spend in the wind tunnel you moron.

  • you forgot to caps the last a in your ahhaha speech. moron

  • Maybe you want to re-read what triple actually wrote before jumping the gun on insults.

  • He did say the car is drafting Armstrong didn't he? Which it was when I looked. Maybe you do teach physics, but you maybe need to work on your reading comprehension?

  • 33+ mph for over an hour!! Lance = The Man

  • this is disgusting...i can barely finish a 20 min TT at that candence and pace

  • Yes you are right :-D

  • I miss this man!

  • the alfa? cna you explain? thanks!

  • steroids is different than EPO

  • Then it's a good thing that he didn't use steroids or any other performing enhancing drugs.

  • His average speed according to the video results: 53.986 kmh. That's 33.545 mph! In US and Britain, time trials of 40K / 25 miles are common. Armstrong's speed well exceeds the national records for both distances, though granted he didn't have to to a 180 deg turnaround that is common on these courses. For 40K, Lance's speed = 44:27.35 (USA national record = 47:35 by John Frey in 1990). For 25 miles, Lance's speed = 44:42.9 (UK national record = 45:57 by Chris Boardman in 1993)

  • the alfa's almost touching his rear wheel!

  • the alpaha? please would you explain that!thanks

  • The red car near the end, it's an alfa and it's nearly touching his rear wheel.

  • I wish I could ride like that. Amazing. Did you his legs? He must have been going well over 130rpm.

  • ya armstrong always used a smaller gear though where as ullrich uses a huge one.

  • You're right Ullrich pushed monster gear. His cadence was so slow it barely looked like he was moving sometimes.

  • 36 miles flat out unbelievable. How tough he must be mentally. That more important than physical

  • Indeed. Wonder what it felt like.

  • 'bright yellow gun' by the Throwing Muses would be a perfect soundtrack to this footage...

  • test
