This is all exactly what I have come up with. Check out his book called behold the spirit, which pretty much shows that christianity is all about losing the ego and how lots of mystical writers like st. thomas aquinas and st. paul thought so too.

Also, religious orders like the franciscans and trappists would pretty much agree with watts. The problem is that most catholic laity have a very different opinion about christ and there the ones with the big mouths. You have to wade through a lot of bs to really find the beauty of catholicism

i agree, but the system of symbols and mythology in place is actually very effective in delivering spiritual realization. the problem is the people in charge don't know how to read and look past the symbols. however, i did (with a lot of help from watts, buddhists, and doctors of the church), and even though it has its flaws, i've chosen it as my spiritual path, because it fits me best.

What is the right context of scripture? Why would a text to be read for divine inspiration/instructions have any specific context at all, well other than the readers own? Observations may be similar but not identical so quoting scriptures within a right context is next to impossible.

I remember thinking like this even when I was a little kid going to Sunday school. I was being told to "fear God," the tyrant of the Old Testament, and it never sat right with me.
