read an interview with Metheny and when asked about his unorthadox picking style he says what he really would like to have done if he ever had free time was to go study picking with Gambale so he could play stuff he heard but was limited by his picking technique
Give his monster lick a shot if you're feeling brave. It's actually a blast if you can get it down and it's a great exercise for really learning what anti-up and down playing means.
@Fluffypopcicle Yea i might just try. Looks like some good sweep patterns. I love how he puts little runs in between some of the sweeps. Realy flavorful.
@Ilovetoplayjazz The bassist is Rick Fierabacci in this recording (RE first 10 secs of clip). But on the album, the bassist is Stuart Hamm. Its a shame that many of the comments to music clips have to be made from a false impression of superiority. That will only discourage those new to this kind of music from making the effort to become more familiar with it. To me all of this type of music is magical. Enjoy the gifts of these musicians.
Thanks for posting this song! As a long time fusion enthousiast, I came across this song on the album Light Beyond for the first time a couple of months ago. It grew on me, and now I really love it. And get to see it live! Thanks!
if you listen to a language that u do not understand (many tongues of which in the world being more complex than English), what are you to reap?. how is a statement supposed to move you if you don't understand the words? poetry, love, passion, hate, all you hear, and see is the emotion without understanding. learn to understand the language and enjoy professional, heart full, music!
@iasonasdemetriou I strongly agree with You. FG maybe not my favourite, but I'm always impressed by him! He's like a rapper improvising with shakespearean terms. it is all to easy to hate on something one has not yet developed the listening understanding to grasp and extract. you will notice that the musicians you praise you praise for there licks and melodic lines ext, because of there familiarity and simplicity, the is fine. the truth is, it is all beautiful, so long as it is from the sole, but understand that if music at this level does not move you and make your hair stand on end it is because of a lack of understanding.

It seems to be the modern jazz musicians destiny to spend all his/her time and money on jazz, only to make it so unappealing that they essentially bankrupt their lives...
@apollodesign and then to ask, "Why does no one like jazz?" As if their completely ignorant of their own demise. That they are delusional. Anyway, all cool. I'm a jazz major myself. Try to be more inviting toward others and maybe you can help float a sinking ship.
@apollodesign Hello, somewhat well put! That is if your assumptions about me had accuracy. 1st, the opening derogator cal comment was directed to certain individuals that at the time posted some rather nasty comments. (Probably removed) 2nd please define "jazz" is this jazz, or Davis, or Holdsworth or Tatum ext( or does it all nd at bitches brew)?
@iasonasdemetriou My assumptions do have accuracy. Anyone who addresses any group of individuals as "confused retards," is as blatantly low as the people they are attacking. Why are you even arguing with me on any of the other tangents? You full on just said, to paraphrase, "I agree with you 100 percent in regards to the pompousness within the jazz scene, which I have become a part of." Likewise you pointed out yourself the wide reach of what's considered jazz, hence i feel no reason to reply.
@apollodesign In regards to the maturity you speak of, I reckon I am at least 10 years younger than you! And I guarantee I love all the music you love, and all the music u hate! So how can you possibly make any defense to what I respect and defend?
@iasonasdemetriou All of what you just said only adds to my argument, you see yourself as a musical savant superior to all those who don't appreciate what you do. Young sir or mam, I have played in countless orchestra's, jazz ensembles, sung centre stage in choirs, played lead guitar in many bands, metal, rock, psychedelic, post-rock, blues, worked 4 years at the Molson Amphitheatre front stage, i'm now a music major who does sound engineer work in his spare time
@iasonasdemetriou So please, up until this point I was fine with being your equal, but your ego makes you unbearable - as it is with most jazz musicians. Get over yourself and realize you're not the only one who appreciates a music and has something to offer to music, because the type of ego that comes with this musical elitism is only capable of detriment to music. I'm 21, if you're 11, congratulations you're on the internet. You'll get further with open mindedness in the arts then not. Change.
@apollodesign wow, i was not expecting such hostility, lol you actually mentioned ego! Gee wizz with all your grand experience that you so longingly felt the need to express to the world i must say, i am quite inferior to such an experienced musician such as yourself!! And I guess if I am not you’re equal you genuinely think that you are superior (yet lol, you accuse me of this), if it is of any consolation to you, you to me will remain my equal, as will the globe.
@apollodesign Come on man I have already stated that i directed that comment ungenerally, judging by your intense defense and haughtiness I’d say if I insulted a musician you admired you would defend him or her with equal intensity to my offence, if not greater. I do not take pride in the opening statement and its praise by whomever. And I am very serious about loving all the music u love and hate, I guarantee you will never meet a more open minded listener!
@apollodesign The funniest part of all of this is you assume i am a jazz musician LMFAO, (rather accomplished by the sound of it,) I wish. I play within the genres containing the narrow mindedness, I have every right to defend what I love. And I do it with great sympathy and humility despite what you may assume based on a short spurt of outrage. I love all music and I love you to, I hope you succeed in the war against superiority complex within the jazz scene, all the best brother.
@apollodesign dont get me wrong I defend my statement particularity because I agree with you 100 percent in regards to pompous within the scene destroying itself. I just feel bad to be accused of being a part of it, which lol, i very well, by a few words, have become a part of it .As is everyone else praising my comment, already is a part of it.
@iasonasdemetriou Or perhaps it simply means that people have different tastes than you, rather than you having a better understanding than everyone else. Stop being such an elitist asshole.
@CaramelMarshmallow on the contrary dick! they do have the same tastes as me, as do you. It is actualy me that has a difference in taste! This is true, quite simply beacause i love all the music you love and all the music you hate!
@CaramelMarshmallow Here’s an example, it quite simple really, if I enjoy thoroughly Schoenberg's atonal pieces as well as the rest of the music you adore then I have the same taste as you. In the english language taste does not refer to ones dislike but to ones taste. Your relying on your interpritasion of language and ignorantly allowing yourself to be negative, cause it is oh so blissful. And now you shall proceed to criticize me on my ignorance!
music is all about opinion. i say this guy has soul and others dont sweep as fast because they lack (thats right i said lack) the skill to do what frank does. in my opinion i get a story from this. this song trips me out and i love it. frank to me is the best. and to others he will continue to be the best and no amount of evidence or facts you bring will change that because there all seen by your opinion. suck it (i think my guy is better then yours) people!
@touwist Those are great guitarists but i guess you dont see frank as one of those good phrasing players. Idk about you but to me a perfect example of a guy who focus's on phrasing is guthrie govan. Im actually impressed that you named some good guitarist even though idk who the ford guy is... i thought you were a troll. Atleast youre making just claims. But to me franks got good phrasing ability.
@touwist Im not from the u.k. so idk if youre trying to say that im a hypocrite cause im calling you a hater, yet my name is extremely vulgar and seems hate filled. But im not the one criticizing Frank gambale on music, when frankly the guy is better than most of the guitarist out there today.
Frank Gambale es la zorra, la proxima vez que venga juro que lo voy a ver, ojala sea con un grupo de músicos al estilo de la frank gambale electrik band :)
The guy below saying this is not complex compared to 'serious' music is absolutely right - why would anyone disagree or have a problem with that? Is it because they like to think of themselves as appreciators of complexity? - if so, this music, enjoyable and well-played though it is, doesn't even dip its toe in the water.
Shawn Lane is a superior guitarist/musician. You inability/resistance to said musical reality is a strong indication you have yet to achieve your GED.
MY GOD that is AH shirt and hair............i thought gambale was bald. wtf is going on here. (would be awesome to now stumble upon a hidden vid of holdsworth bald with bad style in clothes. sweeping the hell out of his guitar to a funk fusion song)
Its true. I was at a Gambale clinic in Melbourene 10 years ago. Someone asked if there was anything at all that made him nervous when he plays. He said, "there is nothing that makes me nervous. I have played so much that all the normal stuff, ego, gear failure, what to play in a solo, etc that's all done and dusted. There is only one thing that I'll never get over and it terrifies the shit out of me". So what's that?, asked the attendee. "when AH is in the room".
Frank and Steve are both legends! I place frank among the top tier of guitar players in the world and Steve... Well... The best drummer Journey ever had.
What a shame that my first introduction to Frank Gambale about 25 years ago (or more) was on a CD that had some poxy photo of him with a bad 80s hairstyle, fluro metal guitar and ridiculous tight track pants. Sorry, but I couldn't go past that image. Now I see and hear this little youtube vid over 2 decades later and realise what a musical genius this man is. The 80's has a lot to answer for.

Who's playing bass? He's bad to the bone. To me Frank sounded alot like Bill Connors and Holdsworth here. right up until the guitar solo, then it's all Gambale. The guy's a genius, hope to see him with RTF4.
@jimmied01 it;'s this Ric Fierabracci guy. had never heard of him until i saw this video, but man he's a kickass bassplayer!!! check out his recent studio work with george whitty (of The Brecker Brothers) and Tom Brechtlein. it's also available here on youtube just search for "whitty fierabracci"...
I don't understand why people find the need to share who they think is a better/faster/cooler guitarist. Music is a subjective art and no one keeps score, Frank is one of my all time favourites but I also listen to the shredders as well. When I was 16 I thought the best guitarists were the ones who could play a million notes a minute but after 23 years of playing I understand that speed is such a small part of the whole musical picture!
That is music to my ears. Gambale, Al di Meola, JmC, Howe, Morse, the older I get, the more I love and understand the compsitional skills. And the older you get, the more your ear understands the beauty of the tone, not the hyper speed. The more I get into fusion, and further from extreme heavy and jazz.
i am such a huge fan of fredrik thordendal, and especially allan holdsworth... and i just found out about this guy... and holy shit... i love it.. soo relaxing.. i love laying down listening to this stuff.. gives me the best feeling ever... reminds me of when i was little... if only other people my age listened to this kind of stuff.. (im 17)... i mean, i listen to death metal, tech death, thrash, black.. almost anything.. but nothing beats jazz.. NOTHING!!!!
read an interview with Metheny and when asked about his unorthadox picking style he says what he really would like to have done if he ever had free time was to go study picking with Gambale so he could play stuff he heard but was limited by his picking technique

iasonasdemetriou 1 month ago
@iasonasdemetriou You just told me that we have the same tastes, and then proceeded to tell me that we have different tastes.
So you're saying you like AIDS Wolf and Schoenberg's atonal pieces?
CaramelMarshmallow 1 month ago
@CaramelMarshmallow Here’s an example, it quite simple really, if I enjoy thoroughly Schoenberg's atonal pieces as well as the rest of the music you adore then I have the same taste as you. In the english language taste does not refer to ones dislike but to ones taste. Your relying on your interpritasion of language and ignorantly allowing yourself to be negative, cause it is oh so blissful. And now you shall proceed to criticize me on my ignorance!
iasonasdemetriou 1 month ago
@iasonasdemetriou indeed i am saying i can thoroughly enjoy all music!
iasonasdemetriou 1 month ago
@iasonasdemetriou If your tastes include something, then you like that thing. It's that simple. Don't argue semantics.

music is all about opinion. i say this guy has soul and others dont sweep as fast because they lack (thats right i said lack) the skill to do what frank does. in my opinion i get a story from this. this song trips me out and i love it. frank to me is the best. and to others he will continue to be the best and no amount of evidence or facts you bring will change that because there all seen by your opinion. suck it (i think my guy is better then yours) people!
Xioaxioa10 5 months ago
@touwist everyone has their own opinion on musicians. But you cant deny the fact that these guys have skill at what they do.
reaperofgenocide 5 months ago
@touwist I agree. It sounds terrible.
MrKiromunist 5 months ago
@touwist damn this robben ford guy got lots of soul.
reaperofgenocide 6 months ago
@touwist Those are great guitarists but i guess you dont see frank as one of those good phrasing players. Idk about you but to me a perfect example of a guy who focus's on phrasing is guthrie govan. Im actually impressed that you named some good guitarist even though idk who the ford guy is... i thought you were a troll. Atleast youre making just claims. But to me franks got good phrasing ability.
reaperofgenocide 6 months ago
@touwist Im not from the u.k. so idk if youre trying to say that im a hypocrite cause im calling you a hater, yet my name is extremely vulgar and seems hate filled. But im not the one criticizing Frank gambale on music, when frankly the guy is better than most of the guitarist out there today.
reaperofgenocide 6 months ago
@touwist how does that hater-aid taste?
reaperofgenocide 6 months ago
What guitar does he use?

There is no doubt in my mind that Frank Gambale went to the bowling alley, played a round and had a pitcher of beer after this. Look at that guy.

You can't help but love the expression on Frank's face, there's always a smile on his face.

@felipefrango Agreed! Frank really enjoys what he does. It is fun to watch a musician who is doing something that he wants to be doing!

Focusing on the guitar player misses the point of the collaboration among all three incredible players. Missing the forest from the trees, IOW.

The guy below saying this is not complex compared to 'serious' music is absolutely right - why would anyone disagree or have a problem with that? Is it because they like to think of themselves as appreciators of complexity? - if so, this music, enjoyable and well-played though it is, doesn't even dip its toe in the water.

Good feeling but god I don't like this guitar sound.
Cyllmegil 10 months ago
I don't understand why people find the need to share who they think is a better/faster/cooler guitarist. Music is a subjective art and no one keeps score, Frank is one of my all time favourites but I also listen to the shredders as well. When I was 16 I thought the best guitarists were the ones who could play a million notes a minute but after 23 years of playing I understand that speed is such a small part of the whole musical picture!
pepachet 10 months ago 2
@pepachet

NOTHING!!!!
