Deus Ex Human Revolution, in the text files, does contain some scholarly articles about human augmentation. It also had to pander to the original conspiracy themes of the first game, though. That is why I believe it lacked focus.
Though despite that lack of singular direction, it DID make me think about augmentation, and the pros and cons. Something its viral advertising campaign alone managed to bring up. The very idea that we can comment on the game this way speaks volumes about it :)
@thenidies not to mention he completely steps over some obvious examples that even he states. (veteran regaining the ability to walk and all that is kind of Adam FUCKING JENSEN)
Your arguments on what the game is saying about trans humanism around 9:30 - 12:30 seem very poor.
These are not main characters of the game. They are pretty much just random strangers on the street representing the average Joe, and being used to express various opinions that people would have about these technologies. If you want more consistent opinions / arguments from the game, use examples from the main characters.
Though I agree that they certainly could have done a lot more on it.
The only thing I can ask for is that the developers see this, understand what needs to be fixed, and put out a "proper" sequel to Deus Ex which makes Invisible War non-cannon.
Also, your statement about transhumanism in HR: I think you're trying to present the game as trying to argue a specific point about transhumanism when it's really not. It seems more like the game is using transhumanism as a template for a social issue, and then allowing you to experience the world and the opinions of NPCs while coming to your own conclusion on the subject. The arguments go all over the place mostly due to an individual interpretation of an issue that spans an entire culture.
@LunaticFringe20 (Con't) I agree that the game isn't really about transhumanism, but I don't think it's really aiming for a deep commentary on it. It's used more as a societal catalyst to present other issues, such as the rich/poor divide, PMCs, America in a post-recession globalized world, crony capitalism, etc.
i think the three boss fights had potential, and could still be "badass", but they would need to rely on more environmental interaction than confronting the boss directly, and for them to have no augmentations at all. Each of the three main Tyrants would be literally the best of the best. (for example), Barret could be the equivalent of gunther hermann (kill everyone, ask later), Yelena would be sadistic, sinister, and sneaky, and Namir would be continued in the next comment.
@cuttinggale63 Namir would be the genius who is incompatible with augmentation (like darrow), but makes up for it with chemical steroids and enhancements. all of these characters would have their own drive for killing Jensen (they see him as their inevitable future, but can't give up because of some backstory explained through emails and logs). make the player see them more with TYM (who jensen is trying to bring down), and make the upcoming conflict obvious, (part 3 later)
@cuttinggale63 and then the player would not be surprised to see them pop up, nor confused as to why they hate jensen. in addition, the theme of regular people becoming less and less valuable would be reinforced, because jensen (who had his augs for six months), ass-kicked their lifetime of experience, training, and specialization.
Great review, but I have to say I felt like you were complaining at one point that different characters in the game world had different perspectives on a particular issue. While I agree that the game wasn't exactly intellectually stimulating, I have to point out that I think the multiple (and even-handedly presented) points of view held by various NPCs was among the game's strong points, story-wise.
Almost every side quest of the game covers different aspects of trans-humanism. For example Talion A.D. during the second visit to Hengsha says more about transhumanism & augmentations than these dialogues about Gunther Hermann from the first Deus Ex (12:45).
Campster should talk about the Civil War in Skyrim and how one-sided it is.
Come on, if any of you used your brain and thought over the points of the Legion vs Stormcloak war while picking one side you must have picked the Legion!
The Legion wants everything the Stormcloaks want which is mainly to get rid of the Thalmor (A group of people watching over the Empire and banning Freedom of Religion). If Skyrim goes on its own they will lose. Legion AND Skyrim goes to war they MIGHT win.
The problem you describe about how the ending just leads us into the original Dues Ex and makes this essentially a side story is the inherent problem with any prequel, we know what happens after it. It doesn't matter how the road is traveled because we know the destination already. It doesn't matter what twists and turns they put in because in the end it has to fit the mold it was designed to flesh out.
@SchrodingersCthulu The journey is more important than the destination, at least when your dealing with prequels. Everyone knew anakin would become Darth Vader, the interesting thing was how that happened.
@IchigoAce That's a fair argument, but so much of the journey has to support the destination that it usually seems, to me at least, that the creativity of the creators is stifled by the requirement the destination gives them.
I'm sure it's been mentioned but I have to disagree with you on the game not talking about transhumanism. Did you take the time to read the lore? I thought personally that the game had a lot to say about transhumanism, especially with the academic journals laying around that you could read. By the end, I felt rather strongly for a position.
Yeah, I didn't really get that criticism either. Of course people have different reasons for being against/for it, like in... real life? Still a good review though :)
Great review. The ending was such a letdown and felt cheap and uninspired. Montage of photographs with a preachy boring monologue? really edios? The 1 line quote conclusions in Deus Ex 1 had more power, insight and emotional connection than the entire plot of HR... Heck the nameless mod for deus ex had a deeper and more though provoking ending which did not sound like a self righteous sermon - they even managed to tell you want happened to all the characters in the game which made it personal...
The boss fights were outsourced to a smaller developer. That doesn't excuse the Three Tyrants being cardboard cutout characters in the story, or the fact that they're in the game at all, but at least we can rest easy that the majority of DXHR is outstanding and memorable. I personally consider the big encounters in the Alice Garden Pods and TYM Penthouse to be "boss battles" b/c they were challenges that tested your stealth, combat, and strategy.
@MikeIronweaver56 You can tell they had to make a lot of changes, the Directors Cut trailer shows all of them in different situations than they appeared in the game. I am highly curious to see what they originally intended.
Do you realized that Eidos had outsourced the boss battles to some other guy and he is the one pretty much responsible for why the sucked. I havn't played the DLC yet and don't plan on it until the price drops, but supposedly they handled the boss battles in a way that fits more into the way the game plays
to add to my previous comment, I found there was still a lot of variety in the method you approach the boss fights. There is always a few different methods you can use to kill a boss it doesn't have to be a "throw all bullets in the inventory at the bad guy" fight. I have to admit the naked muscle man fight was confusing I didn't see much point or reason for it. I'm not saying that anyone is wrong, I'm saying I had a good time playing it and the boss fights didn't take anything away.
I've seen a lot of reviewers criticize the boss battles? When I played I did not have any trouble at all dealing with them. I played mostly stealth and by the time a boss fight came around I was so well stocked up on energy/weapons/explosives I almost never failed a fight. So it might come down to style of play. I overall liked the boss fights they added variety to all the sneaking around I did. It was a near perfect game for me.
This is a great review. However, I disagree about the boss fights. I had literally no issues with them. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, and I'm doing a Pacifist run, so the boss fights are literally the ONLY times in the game where I've used a weapon other than the stun gun. Barrett went down on my first try (take cover, throw out mines to stun him, then throw red barrels until he dies), and Yelena went down on my second try (mine her when she charges, then keep using mines -- GG).
The main menu theme from the original was played in Human Revolution too, if you listen hard enough!

You forgot that either boss fight in the previous game can be bypassed with a killword, making the mech's obsolescence that much more obvious
