  • music is not crap today. you need to look harder, times have changed. its harder for good music to get heard. the system has changed. its probably the best time for music for about 15 years.

  • i just looked at a list of the best songs of the 90's and didn't find a single song as good as this. as stated previously, music today is crap. Big steaming insignificants mounds of crap.

  • @TheObknox wow, powerful feelings, Dude. I have loved Matt Johnson's work since 1984, and I still do. Mega and authentic, raw and unapologetic. Be safe, mate.

  • real talent ,,,, Matt Johnson,

on the albums, he wrote every song, played every instrument, and sang the vocals,(beats the shit out of any so called wanna be these days!!) great sexy voice and a hottie as well!!! phew!!!!!

  • GENIUS!!! Have a day

  • @ANTIJACKSON Someone who doesn't like M&Ms.

  • I live in the town this was filmed in, and I am the latest version of the character that walks past the camera in the final frame!

  • RETROCEDAN EL TIEMPO CARAJOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ANTIJACKSON thats who i meant lol

  • He could almost paint a whole landscape or situation with just a sentence or two - his lyrics were great and the music just stays in your head forever.

  • When they first came out I thought they were as good as it gets. Songs like this & Uncertain smile've held up & are just as good today. Simple but beautiful melody lines, fantastic lyrics (never cliche "oh baby" tunes) & especially the phrasing on the vocals. I always had to sing straight ahead mostly with the melody. But this guy breaks up & pauses in unexpected places like an old music partner of mine used to do. Just love it! From metal to jazz, I just love music. But man, this a cut above!

  • @redfishradical

    Ciao Bello!

I'm right with you "Amico Mio"! As a kid in the mid 80s, when this song was released, during what came to be known as "The Second British Invasion", its sound and creative melody, employing "Continental" musical conventions like the accordian or concertina, were so unique, that when placed next to what my peers were listening to in the US, like REO Speedwagon or the J Geils Band, it was truly out of this world!

    Sinceramente!

    Blaine

  • Any news about Matt Johnson's new album?

  • Great times were had by all in the 80"s.....we use to dance to this in our all black clothes with pointee shoes..what a blast!

  • Fantastic lyrics. Won't hear lyrics this deep today (won't hear much accordion either)

  • ME SIENTO DE 15 AÑOS CON SOLO ESCUCHAR ESTE TEMA........UNICOS!!!......VIVAN LOS 80s!!!!

  • @maryt82003 TOTALMENTE DE ACUERDO!!!!!

  • I'm driving around north wales with Emma mourning my mothers death. Gulls cry and The roads are bright with rain

  • i have loved rediscovering The The x

  • @heavenlylilac me too

  • Unbelievably bad vid but the tune.. oh yeah..

  • El Paso Cantina Long Beach Ca Thurs and Sunday nights loved dancing to this

  • Qué tiempos... Escuchar este tema siempre me sube el ánimo

  • @pablokupfer Tantos somos los que nos sentimos así??? :-)

  • Qué tiempos... Este tema siempre me sube el ánimo

  • Another classic!!

  • This would be a good song to play at a wedding.

  • Normally I do not like popular music being used to sell products, but it is nice that this song is in a commercial, because people in America can now here what they missed back in the 80s. The The were great.

  • "...clear blue skies" ? ...oh yeah, that's right, these were the days before CHEMTRAILS.

  • i fuckin love you Matt Johnson. Ur ace

  • Este som faz parte da minha vida,me lembra de bons momentos e como era gostoso

  • i love it ...

  • Only from England.

  • the best songwriter ever.

  • `84? man, i am old...

  • those were the days.music today is just crap

  • hey, friend! we've been twanging on the same old liar-lyre since 1955!

  • @l0labasyang

No offense but generally the older generations say that because the only contemporary music they hear is on the radio, which is just the tip of an amazing and diverse musical iceberg. Just as when The The were around, most people listened to shit like Culture Club and Wham, today Katy Perry and other disposable, soulless pop dominates the airwaves. There is some truly exciting music floating around today that many hundreds of thousands, even millions of us are enjoying.

  • good memories

  • classic!

  • muito lindo

  • this song takes me back to my younger days when i was only 16 and enjoyin life

  • EPIC.

  • I kant I kant express how much i love THE THE i agree the best acordion riff lol except for Gogol Bordello this song is the bomb just liki his other album love spanishfly

  • Definitely, Gogol Bordello has great accordian.

Another good accordian riff: Lloyd Cole - Brand New Friend.

  • thats wicksy on accordian right

  • Fantastic concert at The Bristol Colston Hall (1985 ish)

  • good in the 80s still good now

  • Love this song. It made me happy in the 80's and still does!

  • adoroooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • handclaps!

  • In my top ten songs of all time. This song is so beautifully subversive ... it has this bouncy top layer of this being the day that everything gets better. But this promise keeps failing, and this eternal optimism eventually is exposed for the empty promise it is. And through all of it, Matt Johnson's voice -- both terrifying and soulful at once - guides us through with some vague reassurance that others have gone through it too.

  • @mikewofsey

    Nicely said

  • Best accordion solo ever. Great tune.

  • Brillant! I loved this song in 1984, my "Punk rocker-Goth" friends turned me on to this, as I was a "Metal-head". they also showed me The Specials, The Member & others...I turned them on to Motorhead, Yngiwe Malmsteen and others...the 80's were a GREAT time because there was a HUGE sharing of artisic ideas without a lot of animosity between musical "factions". Grunge and Rap music was the DEATH of creativity, it's been a downward sprial ever since....

  • Class all round.

  • Un groupe français qui aurait pris pour nom "Le le" ou "les les" aurait-il eu du succès????

  • emo shit? hardly. this songs class.

  • This song will always remind me of that M&Ms commercial!!

  • I first heard this in 2005, I love this song so much, I want the Soul Mining CD very badly. I have 45RPM on CD, it features the Disinfected Version of this song.

  • How wonderful is this song !!!

  • Look this guy has a great talent but gee why isn't he knocking out great songs. Where are you Matt?

    Call me.

  • süperrrrrr

  • why can't alternative songs be like this!

  • Agree, it makes you a little bit sad.... ´but so good!

  • Listening to this song on the last day of summer....

Makes me a little sad. xD

  • what an amazing song

  • matt johnson with hair!!! what a novel idea!!

  • wow ---UH WOW this ole tunes been ringin in mee head fer days,,,whew thnx YT

  • Great track!- remember this from 20 years ago, in August 1989, after my father died...

  • CLÁSSICO TOTAL !!!

  • Euu Amoo essa Musicaaa é Alegree e Contagianteee euu Adoroo 80's

  • I love this song its brill!!!!!!!

  • I have 15 years old...and I LOVE this music ♥

  • I'm almost as old as Bob Dylan, but I watch Empire Records every time it's on TV - mainly to hear the masterwork soundtrack. Real artists don't care if they die broke, and I think that this bijou will be the anthem of the 1990s

  • i love the the :)

  • didn't they do a revise version of this video? I remember the video being different...less morbid and more optimistic.

  • this is morbid?

  • the piano recordian player guy is a bit spookey but gee its a good pop song!!

  • Takes me back to my college days.

  • I love how this song was used in that M&M's commercial.

  • thats where i heard it! lol

  • I just had to say something...I heard this song lastnight before bed...and before bed today, I had made $500 out of the blue..now I can buy a cheap car and get the hell out of this podunk town..my life surely changed!

  • that is so cool ... congrats!!!

  • cool someone was trying give u a message ;)

  • @hops5000 Cool -> and happy for you. But your post is actually an example of the antithesis of Matt JOhnson's message in writing this song. The chorus is entirely tounge in cheek. Its a GENX anthem.

  • top. top. quality song

  • essa musica é show!!!!!!!

  • somebody should play this song on a harmonica

  • there's a video up of a live version with a harmonica

  • thankyou for posting such a great song

  • I Love love love this song :)

  • brilliant staff. Matt Johnson was the only constant band member. Didn't enjoy live concerts, never gave interviews....

  • bravo

  • Where are YOU now? Oh, nobody gives a shit. Try writing a song as good as Matt and then maybe someone might care what you think. Asshole.

  • Well Im not watching Youtube and thinking that I am on a first name basis with the artist as you seem to think ?! It appears You seem seem to care what I think - ASSHOLE

  • haha, M&Ms...

  • GOSTEI....^^

  • great band, i think since matt become a muslan the band was banned by the media...

  • *Laughs* I've always enjoyed a good conspiracy theory !

  • you ve got it all wrong...im not talking about conspiracy but something more serious: CENSORSHIP! this band made good music, good songs and very good lyrics and that is hard to find nowdays...BYE.

  • That guy is rocking the f' outta that occordian.

  • lololololololololol accordion

  • no u

  • Have driven 300 miles to see them live in Linz Austria, sooooo long ago... were one of the most promising bands at that time but they didn't want to be cheap commercial, so they suddenly disappeared... one more shameful acts from the commercial music industry... but their fans will remember them forever !!!!!!

  • awesome song... love it in empire records (a movie).

  • Summer of 84 ....memories ......memories .....

  • Such a great song.

  • ahh...the song is very nostalgic to me...reminds me of French class in High School

  • I don't "Imagine" there will be any more Beatles' songs used to sell stuff.... not if Bob Costas has anything to do with it...

he practically started a "Revolution" all his own opposing Nike's ad campaign...what a dweeb

  • oh, and a footnote to my earlier comment...why should an artist or group pass up exposure to another generation? i'm sure a lot of 12-18 yr olds haven't seen empire records which is where i first heard the song.

  • This song was 12 years old when Empire Records came out in 95. Empire Records was 12 years old when the M&m commericals came out in 07. You know its a Great Song when after 26 years people still like this.

  • im 20 empire records is where i first this song great movie great song all genrations have something to offer i prefer to keep it old school

  • why is it automatically viewed as a crime for an artist to allow their work to be used to sell a product? if you have no moral or ethical objections to a product, why not take the money? cause i'm the sure the the didn't rake in millions and btw, who doesn't like m&m's?

  • Most underrated "band" ever. Matt Johnson is amazing.

  • Agreed. Fabulous band.

  • I have the cassette of this album, with a bunch of odd tracks at the end that aren't on the CD. I should digitize it soon. :)

  • yes you should they r great

  • I haven't seen the M&M commercial in question (fortunately). Perhaps it will make enough money that he might put out more music - soon.

  • Stupid M&M's had to kill this song for me! nahh I still love it though.. but I stopped eating m&m's haha!

  • yyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh.

    i fuckin love this song

    ;]

  • The worst ever The The video by a million miles....

Anything from Infected or Dusk is absolute gold...

  • Truly classic, one of the few songs from my post-punk childhood that have grown with me. It's even more relevant to me now than when I first heard it in the 80's! I cringed when I first saw the M&M commercial, but it's nice to see The The getting the credit they deserve (even if the millions watching the commercial had know idea who sang it!).

  • This song is awesome for its time period.

my friend recommended the song. to cheer me up.

    and it helped

  • I was born after this song was realeased and I don't know how popular this song was but I bet it was hitting the #1 charts for months :)

  • Nope, The The's highest ever chart rating was something like #18...

    A travesty I know...

  • @JulOyt Got almost zero air play on main stream NA radio. Some in Europe, which in those days was far more progressive and ahead of the curve (as to now where its a race to the bottom). But even there, The The never really hit it big. The only charts you would have seen them prominently featured were the University \ College radio ones in the 80's. Then as now -> the best place to discover the best new music. No advertisers or wanker, morally bankrupt, yuppie bosses to tell you what to play.

  • you know what. I have loved this song for years, since the early 80s actually, and had no idea who did it!

  • So many days l lived this song! Great post!

  • Empire Records ^^

  • to think that the only reason that i know this song is because of a m m tv add

  • this song is so meaningful to me. i had no idea it was made in the 80s.

  • does anyone know if they were from eastbourne?

  • its a crime that this song isnt better known

  • It's a pleasure I'd say. It's one of my secret little treasures.

  • Amazing song!

  • I adore this song, and hasn't Matt got a lot of hair there? Lol!!

  • Maybe some of those people will fall in love with Matt's music, thanks to that m&m's commercial, but wow this is such a great band

  • esse é meu dia a muitos anos

  • This is the guy with the best voice and best band name! Not the best overall band... that goes to Talking Heads!

  • Genial.

  • OMG. Matt Johnson looked real good back then. :)

  • This is going to sound weird, but hear me out... doesn't the accordion player's face, especially at 2:57, look a bit like Dr. Manhattan from the movie "The Watchmen"? Same emotionless mouth, his eye aren't visible, and no hair in sight.

  • one of the best bands in the the world!

  • One of the most underated bands ever. A classic band that has made some fantastic tunes. This song reminds of my first time backpacking in 1989 and I played it constantly on my sony walkman.

Thanks for making me smile very drunk on Ouzo in Athens

  • THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.

THIS IS THE DAY -- Your life will surely change.

You could've done anything -- if you'd wanted

And all your friends and family think that you're lucky.

But the side of you they'll never see

Is when you're left alone with the memories

That hold your life together like

    Glue

  • Vaya album el de este tema. Obra maestra.

  • I adore this song! I've had it on CD for ages, not knowing who made it, nor what the song was called. Thanks so much for posting it!

  • here here....christ! i sound like the house of lords

  • matt johnson is a musical genius. his songs are so good, so melodic, so genuine, and so catchy. sadly, this type of music is almost nonexistent today.

    Long live The The

  • I bought the Soul Mining album in summer of '84. Every track is a gem. 24 years later, I still listen to it on occasion. All of this great music at the time was "under the radar" and now its rightfully joined the ranks of Classic Rock/Alternative/whatever

  • My all time fav band, thankfully managed to catch them live in Glasgow twice.

    Love this.

  • with a name like crackman i rest my case

  • i think you are a CUNT !!! but hey ho ??? crackman !!! sun rise on chad valley !! Mr crackhead !! sorry crackman !!! you TWAT !!!!

  • I think your name explains your horrible grammar. lol

  • Go Matt johnson!

  • some of the last great songs of the great 80's. i miss the good old days

  • My wife says The The were a new romantic band I strongly disagree could anyone answer this ?

  • Yes, your wife is wrong. The The never belonged in the neo romantic pack. Nothing to do with it. Matt Johnson is one of a kind, nothing compares to The The.

  • Hi,no,they were not new romantics.Bands were given this name back in early 80 due to the way they dressed,a sort of punk chic coming out of london night scene and clubs like the blitz.Tough not all were from london.Ex: Spandau Ballet ,Classix Nouveau,Duran Duran,Visage,Depeche Mode(to a certain extent)

  • First Real love......It was her birthday.....she dumped me......I still had her copy of Soul Mining........I cried to this song for weeks.....one of those songs that have followed me from vynil, tape, cd, mp3 and now Youtube. TY for posting!

  • ...just love this song! =)

  • i love songs with accordians!

  • i,m missing one album of matt johnson Pornography of Despair, does anyone have it?

  • "this is the day" and dexy mid runner's "come on eileen" best songs of the 80s, who agrees?

  • btw, in case anyone who didn't know it before is wondering why this song might sound familiar, this movie is also played in the ending scenes of Empire Records, but it's not on the soundtrack

  • I've always loved this song. Thanks. Thought Matt had always been bald !

  • Wow. This has been my "happy song" for years! I played it in my room as I got dressed on my wedding day, and on the day I went to the graduation for my Master's degree. Great stuff!

  • I have all there albums and this is the first time I have seen a video of em,Thanks

  • Wow!!! I can't believe I've found this. Ive been looking for so long. Ive got soul mining on record! I didn't know they made any videos.

  • I like this song. I first heard it from that new M&Ms commercial. God Bless The Internet.

  • yay, glad to hear someone checked it out! that's why i'm watching it now cuz of that silly commercial... i just didn't wanna find it on one of my old worn out VHS tapes :-D
