music is not crap today. you need to look harder, times have changed. its harder for good music to get heard. the system has changed. its probably the best time for music for about 15 years.
i just looked at a list of the best songs of the 90's and didn't find a single song as good as this. as stated previously, music today is crap. Big steaming insignificants mounds of crap.
@TheObknox wow, powerful feelings, Dude. I have loved Matt Johnson's work since 1984, and I still do. Mega and authentic, raw and unapologetic. Be safe, mate.
on the albums, he wrote every song, played every instrument, and sang the vocals,(beats the shit out of any so called wanna be these days!!) great sexy voice and a hottie as well!!! phew!!!!!
He could almost paint a whole landscape or situation with just a sentence or two - his lyrics were great and the music just stays in your head forever.
When they first came out I thought they were as good as it gets. Songs like this & Uncertain smile've held up & are just as good today. Simple but beautiful melody lines, fantastic lyrics (never cliche "oh baby" tunes) & especially the phrasing on the vocals. I always had to sing straight ahead mostly with the melody. But this guy breaks up & pauses in unexpected places like an old music partner of mine used to do. Just love it! From metal to jazz, I just love music. But man, this a cut above!
I'm right with you "Amico Mio"! As a kid in the mid 80s, when this song was released, during what came to be known as "The Second British Invasion", its sound and creative melody, employing "Continental" musical conventions like the accordian or concertina, were so unique, that when placed next to what my peers were listening to in the US, like REO Speedwagon or the J Geils Band, it was truly out of this world!
Normally I do not like popular music being used to sell products, but it is nice that this song is in a commercial, because people in America can now here what they missed back in the 80s. The The were great.
No offense but generally the older generations say that because the only contemporary music they hear is on the radio, which is just the tip of an amazing and diverse musical iceberg. Just as when The The were around, most people listened to shit like Culture Club and Wham, today Katy Perry and other disposable, soulless pop dominates the airwaves. There is some truly exciting music floating around today that many hundreds of thousands, even millions of us are enjoying.
I kant I kant express how much i love THE THE i agree the best acordion riff lol except for Gogol Bordello this song is the bomb just liki his other album love spanishfly
In my top ten songs of all time. This song is so beautifully subversive ... it has this bouncy top layer of this being the day that everything gets better. But this promise keeps failing, and this eternal optimism eventually is exposed for the empty promise it is. And through all of it, Matt Johnson's voice -- both terrifying and soulful at once - guides us through with some vague reassurance that others have gone through it too.
Brillant! I loved this song in 1984, my "Punk rocker-Goth" friends turned me on to this, as I was a "Metal-head". they also showed me The Specials, The Member & others...I turned them on to Motorhead, Yngiwe Malmsteen and others...the 80's were a GREAT time because there was a HUGE sharing of artisic ideas without a lot of animosity between musical "factions". Grunge and Rap music was the DEATH of creativity, it's been a downward sprial ever since....
I first heard this in 2005, I love this song so much, I want the Soul Mining CD very badly. I have 45RPM on CD, it features the Disinfected Version of this song.
I'm almost as old as Bob Dylan, but I watch Empire Records every time it's on TV - mainly to hear the masterwork soundtrack. Real artists don't care if they die broke, and I think that this bijou will be the anthem of the 1990s
I just had to say something...I heard this song lastnight before bed...and before bed today, I had made $500 out of the blue..now I can buy a cheap car and get the hell out of this podunk town..my life surely changed!
@hops5000 Cool -> and happy for you. But your post is actually an example of the antithesis of Matt JOhnson's message in writing this song. The chorus is entirely tounge in cheek. Its a GENX anthem.
Well Im not watching Youtube and thinking that I am on a first name basis with the artist as you seem to think ?! It appears You seem seem to care what I think - ASSHOLE
you ve got it all wrong...im not talking about conspiracy but something more serious: CENSORSHIP! this band made good music, good songs and very good lyrics and that is hard to find nowdays...BYE.
Have driven 300 miles to see them live in Linz Austria, sooooo long ago... were one of the most promising bands at that time but they didn't want to be cheap commercial, so they suddenly disappeared... one more shameful acts from the commercial music industry... but their fans will remember them forever !!!!!!
i was introduced to this song 18 years ago by and old girlfriend. To this day it still has the ability to make me smile or cry depending on my state of mind. It has to be one of the best songs ever written. It reminds me of someone very special. Olivia if you are out there i will always love you xx
oh, and a footnote to my earlier comment...why should an artist or group pass up exposure to another generation? i'm sure a lot of 12-18 yr olds haven't seen empire records which is where i first heard the song.
This song was 12 years old when Empire Records came out in 95. Empire Records was 12 years old when the M&m commericals came out in 07. You know its a Great Song when after 26 years people still like this.
why is it automatically viewed as a crime for an artist to allow their work to be used to sell a product? if you have no moral or ethical objections to a product, why not take the money? cause i'm the sure the the didn't rake in millions and btw, who doesn't like m&m's?
Truly classic, one of the few songs from my post-punk childhood that have grown with me. It's even more relevant to me now than when I first heard it in the 80's! I cringed when I first saw the M&M commercial, but it's nice to see The The getting the credit they deserve (even if the millions watching the commercial had know idea who sang it!).
@JulOyt Got almost zero air play on main stream NA radio. Some in Europe, which in those days was far more progressive and ahead of the curve (as to now where its a race to the bottom). But even there, The The never really hit it big. The only charts you would have seen them prominently featured were the University \ College radio ones in the 80's. Then as now -> the best place to discover the best new music. No advertisers or wanker, morally bankrupt, yuppie bosses to tell you what to play.
This is going to sound weird, but hear me out... doesn't the accordion player's face, especially at 2:57, look a bit like Dr. Manhattan from the movie "The Watchmen"? Same emotionless mouth, his eye aren't visible, and no hair in sight.

matt johnson is a musical genius. his songs are so good, so melodic, so genuine, and so catchy. sadly, this type of music is almost nonexistent today.
I bought the Soul Mining album in summer of '84. Every track is a gem. 24 years later, I still listen to it on occasion. All of this great music at the time was "under the radar" and now its rightfully joined the ranks of Classic Rock/Alternative/whatever
Yes, your wife is wrong. The The never belonged in the neo romantic pack. Nothing to do with it. Matt Johnson is one of a kind, nothing compares to The The.
Hi,no,they were not new romantics.Bands were given this name back in early 80 due to the way they dressed,a sort of punk chic coming out of london night scene and clubs like the blitz.Tough not all were from london.Ex: Spandau Ballet ,Classix Nouveau,Duran Duran,Visage,Depeche Mode(to a certain extent)
First Real love......It was her birthday.....she dumped me......I still had her copy of Soul Mining........I cried to this song for weeks.....one of those songs that have followed me from vynil, tape, cd, mp3 and now Youtube. TY for posting!
btw, in case anyone who didn't know it before is wondering why this song might sound familiar, this movie is also played in the ending scenes of Empire Records, but it's not on the soundtrack
Wow. This has been my "happy song" for years! I played it in my room as I got dressed on my wedding day, and on the day I went to the graduation for my Master's degree. Great stuff!
yay, glad to hear someone checked it out! that's why i'm watching it now cuz of that silly commercial... i just didn't wanna find it on one of my old worn out VHS tapes :-D

My wife says The The were a new romantic band I strongly disagree could anyone answer this ?
lambrettali125 4 years ago
Yes, your wife is wrong. The The never belonged in the neo romantic pack. Nothing to do with it. Matt Johnson is one of a kind, nothing compares to The The.

Hi,no,they were not new romantics.Bands were given this name back in early 80 due to the way they dressed,a sort of punk chic coming out of london night scene and clubs like the blitz.Tough not all were from london.Ex: Spandau Ballet ,Classix Nouveau,Duran Duran,Visage,Depeche Mode(to a certain extent)

btw, in case anyone who didn't know it before is wondering why this song might sound familiar, this movie is also played in the ending scenes of Empire Records, but it's not on the soundtrack

Wow. This has been my "happy song" for years! I played it in my room as I got dressed on my wedding day, and on the day I went to the graduation for my Master's degree. Great stuff!
