"Glorifying the SLAVERY of horses"??? Are you cracked? Horses die horrible deaths in "nature"...if you've ever looked into the eye of a horse, they are full of love & devotion & gratefullness for the care & love they feel from their human companion.

As for racing - they love it! It breaks my heart to see one get hurt whether on the track or in the pasture, it happens. Thank God for horses!

  • Such a beautiful song. Too bad it's about glorifying the slavery of horses for man's entertainment.

  • @juslookin3 - Hello. Our neighbors, equine vets, say that thoroughbred race horses are very well treated. Sometimes, they're bought & kept exclusively to make money for the owners. However, most of them are truly loved by the people around them. When they get old or ill, they're put to sleep painlessly & peacefully. They LOVE to run so it's not cruel to train them at all which comforts me because I love animals & can't stand the thought of them being neglected & abused. Best Wishes To You.

  • @mjcamck Hi. Dogs might like to run sometimes, too, but not for 24 hours straight like they're forced to in the Iditarod, where dogs die in every race. I doubt horses like to run on analgesics, or to be beaten with a jockey's whip. Like greyhounds, many more horses are bred than are winners. When they don't win, they're often discarded. See WLKY dot com and search for "horse slaughter." Finding the truth takes more than talking with a vet whose values are tied to the industry they serve.

  • @mjcamck Also, veterinarians as a group are not only NOT at the vanguard of animal protection, they are involved in every form of institutionalized animal abuse--vivisection, fur, farmed animals/slaughter, racing, etc. Veterinarians don't serve animals; they serve people who pay them. They dock tails and crop ears of dogs for their owners. They put their rubber stamp of approval on all the abusive industries mentioned above. The veterinary establishment actively hinders progress for animal

  • @juslookin3 - Hello. My veterinarian neighbors are both animal lovers. They KNOW about the abuse that SOME horse owners/breeders inflict. SOME pet owners are very cruel to their pets. Does that mean that the entire pet industry should be outlawed? Instead of throwing out the good with the bad, shouldn't we be concentrating on eliminating just the inhumane practices? Seriously. Peace.

  • @mjcamck Seriously...how many greyhounds being discarded/year are acceptable to you to continue to support greyhound racing? How many dogs dying in each Iditarod is acceptable? How many abused and/or discarded horses from the racing industry are acceptable? Bullfights? Rodeos? Circuses? All breeding misery and death to support man's lust for entertainment at their expense. My concern is with the animals, not the "rights" of insatiable humans to exploit to the fullest, in every way. Best

  • @juslookin3 - Hello. NOT Guilty. WHEN . . . where did I ever state that cruelty to animals, in any form, was "acceptable?" The UNdisputed FACT that numerous domesticated dogs, horses, etc. are mistreated should NOT be a reason for throwing out the good with the bad, but rather an incentive to ELIMINATING the neglect & abuse. When owned by decent, affectionate, good-hearted individuals, domesticated animals are well fed & live long, comfortable, lives filled with the activity they love. Peace.

  • @mjcamck Hi. Your responses have been supportive of racing. My point is that whenever animals are exploited for man's entertainment, it is abuse. The racing itself is abusive (though not as bad as some other forms of "entertainment"). They have no choice. The fact that they are legally chattel and have no rights, ensures that there will always be abuse and neglect on a large scale. If you care about animals, why must you support their exploitation? Horses don't want to race; people want it

  • @juslookin3 - Hello. We just disagree here. Sorry, but thoroughbred Race Horses DO love to run (whip causes discomfort, not pain.) Iditarod dog's health are essential to good performance; they are well cared for. Sled dogs DO love to run in snow. When they don't want to, they refuse to "mush" & are replaced on the trail, not killed. Race organizers ban mushers caught neglecting/abusing their dogs. I hope you're turning your commendable passion into volunteer service at a animal shelter.Peace.

  • @mjcamck Wow, you're in denial. Dogs die in every Iditarod (I guess you might say due to sheer joy), and many more are bred than are winners. Living life in a kennel or tied to stakes I guess is your idea of dog heaven. And you have the gall to defend horse whipping to fulfill man's lust for horse racing. I only responded because I thought that you cared, but I've wasted my time. Progress for animals has only occurred in spite of people like you. Goodbye.

  • @juslookin3 -Hello.I won't be hurling unjustified insults back at you.I KNOW dogs die every Iditarod; that tells me even MORE canine safety measures are needed.Nor, am I "defending" inflicting pain on horses (the whips startle, not hurt). I'm saying your solution throws out the positive (animals provided food, shelter, health care) w/the bad. People die in car accidents daily. So do we ban all automobiles or INCREASE safety features & measures? I hope you'll think about it. Peace.

  • @juslookin3 - Hello.A couple of final points: animals in the wild, not having anyone to provide for them, starve, get ill or hurt, then suffer lonely, agonizing deaths. It's horrible, but it's nature's way. At least diseased/injured racehorses go to sleep painlessly. If you don't already, I encourage you to put your passion to good use by VOLUNTEERING to rescue hurt animals like I've done; I truly do NOT deserve your insults. I sincerely extend Best Wishes & Peace to you.

  • @mjcamck You could use all of your rationalizations to justify human slavery, which I don't doubt that you would if it were 1850. Maybe you would have nursed a few sick or beaten ones to help you justify your "caring" pro-slavery position. I don't doubt that if this were Mexico or Spain that you'd defend bullfighting as something bulls enjoy. To equate the brutality of man-caused death and injury in the Iditarod to "bad things happen in nature" is despicable. Try that on kids.

  • @juslookin3 - Hello. Those who know me could tell you how completely off base your demeaning accusations are. I've donated massive amounts of time and/or money to programs which prevent abuse to children & animals, some of which I've personally rescued & delivered to shelters. It's clear you're not interested in a rational conversation, but just want a target to hurl insults at. I'm not interested. I hope you'll learn to disagree agreeably. PEACE & Farewell.

  • It's Derby Day!!! Go General's Quarters!!!

  • awesome song - a week out from the derby 2009. i'd forgotten that d. fogelberg had passed away. i wish this song had more recognition.

  • Being one who plays Run for the Roses, this video is close to my heart, symbolizing the freedom and beauty of youth, so fleeting and precious, as was the life of Dan Fogelberg. Today is the 1st anniversary of his passing, and my heart is heavy..."but, your music will always live on, Dan, and I know that you're aware of this...even though you've passed on.

  • Today is the 1st anniversary of Dan Fogelberg's death, and I am both grieving and celebrating his life. There is a void in the world since his death, but I shall always cherish his life and his music. He touched my soul, and for that I'm glad. C. Goodman

  • Today 8-13 is Dan's birthday not the anniversery of his passing. To find out how I am helping Dan's music shine on check out my MySpace page listed on my youtube channel.

  • Beautiful!!

    - Ian

  • Thanks, pre10der. It was a shame that they didn't even acknowledge this song at the Derby this year. Dan deserves much more of a tribute than he's gotten! I miss this man!

  • Thank you for posting this! I rememeber watching this live and had been hoping this would turn up on youtube someday.

  • I'm so amazed this was posted. I missed the derby today but was wondering if anything was done as a tribute to Dan during the festivities. It would be shameful if they didn't. Thanks so much for this wonder post.

  • Good luck everyone betting on the Derby! This song is rather sad now that Mr. Fogelberg is no longer with us. R.I.P. Dan
