  • you should have gorden lightfoot singin

  • why would twenty three people dislike this.

  • My folks took us up the the family cabin on the shores of Lake Superior and in the span of a half hour it went from a flat surface to a raging S.O.B. and we have a boat dock with a water thermometer attached to it and it read literally 14 degrees--Mid July! The winds on Superior were howling all night long. Every where else was suffering from a heat wave but here we were at the smaller family cabin on Lake Superior freezing our asses off in late July early August.

  • Fantastic video, was the song by Steve Roach and Robert Rich?

  • very touching, I get God smacked when I see things like this, that the power of the seas and they're unmerciful waves. You have to have respect for whats out there. There's an old saying....you have to go out but you don't have to come back. Thumbs up! for Gordon Lightfoot as well, Huh, that's cool that we are from the same town in GA.

  • To thoughs who dislike the video, shame on you. You have absolutely no respect for the dead who didnt survive on the great lakes and have no respect for these dangerous waters. I hope all those haters rot on the bottom of the great lakes.

  • sad sad year... nice imagery. Good job. And to those who said "no wonder it sank"... it's a ore boat... They all look like that.

  • music sounds scary

  • i always find it rearly spooky seeing a boat/ship under water they always look rearly eary i remember as a kid rowing over a sunken dingy it was horrible put a shiver up my spine

  • I am proud to say I was a watchman on her deck. I will never forget. Rest in peace.

    D.Murphy

  • @Deetroiter I agree with you. I was looking for agates on the shore on a windy day an slipped and almost got sucked in by the lake waves. The water is freezing cold. Like Atlantic cold. This was in August too. Superior is no joke. It's weather can change unexpectedly fast.

  • Lake Superior is no joke, anyone who has been there can attest to that. Cold as hell and violent on a moments notice. Went up there last June and the water temperature on the beach was 38 degrees. And that's in June...

  • A true Laker !!! To all those who lost family on that dark and stormy night our wishes are always with you and to you the lost seaman. Watch over the other Lakers forever more.

  • 18 people have better have a good reason being haters.

  • Nice Job. Very tastefully done. Gordy's song would have been a nice touch

but your selection captures it well.

I'm sure those 29 souls would agree.

    R

  • 3:11 HOLY CRAP!!!!

  • @CSXer yup, and to think...i go swimming in that lake! O.0

  • That's the Edmund Fitzgerald?

    Gee, no wonder is sank...

  • @MrDerogative Not all photo presented were of the Fitz. Other ships photos were used in order to dramatize how severe the weather can be and how dangerous it really is.

  • @davidnandavid Fair enough, but I'm certain that the ship shown at 0:35 is the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Now, I'm not an expert on sea-faring vessels, but the Edmund looks like it'd be hard to maneuver, what with it's enormous length. It looks as though it could practically be snapped in half.

  • @MrDerogative

It bears the name "Edmund Fitzgerald" Directly on the side. The ship had a unique way of turning. She would pivot, not so much "turn". The stern would turn on a relatively small radius, the bow would swing outwards.

  • @MrDerogative The Fitzgerald was a "conventional straight decker" It was and probably still is the most common build of freighter on the Great Lakes. Most ships now have self unloading boom attached to the stern other than that the design is is almost identical to alot of freighters still active on the lakes

  • Personally I think the music fits right in. Better then the Gordon Lightfoot song. Not taking away from Gordon this music is just a little more erie sounding.

  • Personally I think the music if very fitting for the video, more so the the Gordon Lightfoot song.

  • Part of the music situation is that Lightfoot changed some of the lyrics to reflect current research that indicates a captain's error may have caused or at least contributed to the wreck. One would think that after 30+ years it would be time to let the poor man rest.

  • You can't post the wreck of edmund fitzgerald, copyright infringement.

  • I think the sound on this is phenomenal... my mind plays the song... the absence of it with the high wail of wind and the constant trickling and running of water makes it haunting and powerful.

  • Can you tell me what is the name of this music? I think it's awesome (I really do). Love Gordon Lightfoot's song too :)

  • I see some of the posts and think: Does every collection of this topic need Gordon Lightfoot's song? I think this was a great sequence of photos and the song was hunting enough to let the experience sink in. Good job!

  • Hey I think you did a terrific job compiling all those photos along with the eerie music which seemed to fit the disaster of that enormous ship. Good Job!!!

  • The sound track is really erie, no pun intended. What is it?

  • wheres Gordys song??

  • @acerb45666555 The music industry decided not to let me use it....go figure.

  • McSorley was known as a fearless captain, who very seldom took refuge from a storm. They took refuge near the island visible on the map during the first day of this 2 day storm. The ship had developed a list at this point, meaning it was leaning. It has also lost radar. When the weather appeared to be improving substantially they took off at about 13 mph without radar. Then the weather got worse than before. they slowed so the arthur m anderson could catch up/lead. Sank at about 7:10 PM.

  • Now this is a song

  • Very cool video thanks for posting.

  • Gordon Lighfoot has now changed his lyrics live as the truth is known..she was having difficulty, they thought cause she was so close to elfpoint and ran over a shallow area, she was lucky and didn't hit,no damage of this,so ship infront was asked to slow down they did and watched it all go down, even the salties.(ocean-liners) didn't wanna be out there to give ya guys a clue to how bad it was,i mean thats bad! i sail all the great lakes seen 25 foot seas and clocked 110mph winds myself its no joke

  • @ltuomela Are you saying that the ship did or did not hit a shoal? Because from what I've heard they haven't confirmed. All i know is it was loaded with twice it's own weight which is an engineering marvel in itself. Thats like putting a 10 foot long 2 x 4 accross two saw horses and standing in the middle while jumping and expecting it not to break.

  • I,d not wish to be on a ship. Was this ship nambed after someone?

  • very good video.the music was haunting.

  • Cool video - I think it would have had more impact if the song Edmond Fitzgerald played instead of whateverthehell is playing

  • @Billiardnut520 Really?, you thinks so?....

Your input is appreciated...I wanted to but was blocked....Damn record companies!

  • @davidnandavid thats too bad, but the pictures were def appreciated, however i too was expecting lyrics and or music.......

  • @Billiardnut520 Personally I think the song fits in perfect. But I know what you r saying

  • when I look out over those waters today I still feel a sense of adventure but i get a chill down my spine! I say a prayer for all the life's of the 350 ships and over 1000 crew she claimed may they sail calm waters and be reunited with there families in the end.

  • @troyjamesmeyer wow and thats a very small figure estimated you gave,we know of at least 1000 in whitefish-bay alone..agreed its no joke out there, i tell folk that ask me where and how to sail it, to stay near the bays, they look at me like im nuts..i hope the ones that did inquire take my advise it can change on a dime in superior and lake Mich.

  • my dad was on there

  • @mightymouse681 Oh wow. Sorry to hear that.

  • this song in one verse..."The story lives on how the boat she went down, and the people all died....bummer."

  • Thanks for not putting Gordon Lightfoot's song on here. Great song. But the montage with the eerie music you have is fantastic. More captivating.

  • its 1978 not 58

  • @bobbymcbobbypants The boat was launched in 1958.....

  • @davidnandavid Ship. She was much larger than a "boat."

  • @davidnandavid Yeah, Bobby, she went down in 1975, as it says in the text at the beginning.

  • @bobbymcbobbypants and sank in 78

  • @lacrossemaster31......Really? I guess everybody is WRONG and your right....

  • @lacrossemaster31 ....

    check your facts son....

  • Music is creeping me out...But then again, the story of this ship does too. I'm not sure why either, I've heard so many stories of lots of people dying like this but for some reason this just disturbs me.

  • @GodsBittersweetEmo I am the same way, I do alot of history research on WWII and the American civil war but this song and the story behind the wreck is the only thing thats creeped me out

  • I still get goosebumps when I think of the Edmund Fitz. Such a sad sad sad day in Great Lakes history.

  • Imagine the strength of the storm that brought that boat down.

  • RIP crew members of the Edmund Fitzgarald.

  • I will swear upon the Bible as my testimony is the truth. When I was a kid....one night I had a terible dream of sailors drowning. I woke up early in the morning...bawling my eyes out. My parents were confounded. Then it came on the NEWS...the news of the Edmund Fitzgerald came on. My parents were so busy consoling me, they did not notice. I calmed down and pointed to the TV. My parents jaws dropped to the floor. I remember most of the day snuggled in the arms of my parents. I mourned!

  • @EricBBrandon1

I believe you. Kids have some sort of psychic ability the grown-ups don't. When I was a kid I also had a dream similar to this. I dreamed that the old lady down the street died. When I was walking to street that morning, I saw an ambulance in front of her house. After school, I asked my mother why the ambulance was there. She told me the old lady had a heart attack. I found out the next day that she had passed away.

  • @EricBBrandon1 No need to swear..doesn't 'phase' anyone anyway...I believe you my friend

  • @botbagel ....I think so as well.

  • Thank God for Gordon Lightfoot for the song. It brought the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" into my life. If it hadn't been for his song, I wouldn't have even known about it. I live in New York City, and every time I hear the song, I somehow, have this connection to the people who died on that ship, and for their families. I thank him for that.

  • Dern, that sucker was long as heck...steveovt

  • God Bless Your Souls & Ease your families pain!

  • Thomas Edwards, was a cousin of my mother and died when the Fitzgerald sank. Fitting tribute to the captain and crew! RIP.

  • Can anyone tell me how to find out what certain jobs on the Edmund Fitzgerald were? What does the watchman do? What does the oiler do? How about the wiper? And what are mates, second mates, and third mates? Thank you for your help. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

  • You did a wonderful job with this video. Very moving.

  • just saw the memorial service on local tv for the lost 29 souls. May God Bless them.

  • 35 years ago to this day.

    RIP those 29... :(

  • 35th anniversary. R.I.P S.S Edmund Fitzgerald and her crew of 29. :'(

  • 35 years ago, today!

  • A very well done video...and the song is very moving to the men that lost their lives..Superior never gives up the dead..the worst Great Lake to be on in a storm..RIP guys:(:(

  • Deepest sympathy to the victims and their families.

    Video very well done, David

  • eerie video so sadd.THE SOUND OF WATER COMIN IN IS VERY CREEPY. an american trgedy, all RIP

  • Isn't this the second most famous shipwreck in history? The first being the titanic?

  • i have learned a lot about the edmund fitzgerald in school, teacher was 8 years old when it happended

  • they still havent found the ship have they?

  • @BostonBruinsOWN Yea they found it shortly after it sank but were not able to go down to it till the following spring.

  • @BostonBruinsOWN yes they have brought the brass Bell up a few years ago

  • Tonight... to 4 brave men lost at sea .. In The Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia,,, September 2010 ... Digby Nova Scotia's ...Cory LeBlanc, Anthony Orde, Brydon Orde, and Capt. Lee White were aboard the R.L.J. GOD Rest their souls.. and heal the hearts of those ... family and friends ...left behind them!

  • @WolfMoonRaising

i just got in that day when I heard about that. It's absolutely terrifying, especially when you look at the size of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The sea decides whether or not you live or die

  • I believe the three sisters theory

  • The image at 2:15 is terrifying. Superb video and a perfect soundtrack, thank you for the upload. Rob from Italy

  • Edmund Fitzgerald will be the last Great Lakes shipwreck. As weather prediction. shipboard technology, and a declining steel trade all come down on the Lakes, a way of life will pass us by. The fact that coming on 35 years has passed since a major sinking is tantamount to this.

  • @luketdrifter2100 you are very wrong

  • Eerie. Eerie. Eerie. I'll be dam#ed if I ever go to sea again. It haunts my dreams. Mother Earth won't swallow you untill you're dead, but Sister Sea will swallow you whenever She pleases. Wonderful video, Thanks for the nightmares.

  • Der Wahnsin wenn mann bedenkt das so ein Riesen Schiff auf einem See gesunken ist

  • my close relative, Ed McSorley, was the captain of that ship.Occasionally I get my son to play on the guitar and sing the song to me. Hauntingly beautiful.

  • That was a sad day.

    So many brave men died.

    The sea can be cruel.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • 3:15 ouch.... i feel sorry for the men on the ship. there ina better place now.

  • Phenomenal video. Such a sad, very sad day. I remember that day so well. Thanks for posting. You did a great job with this video.

  • @Lobsterlady2362 , the old fat man thanks you...Dave.

  • @Lobsterlady2362 Thank you so much...Dave.

  • To All Those On Board RIP. God Bless Their Souls.

  • Are all the waves that go over the ships on Lake Superior? Is the boat at 2:22 the Paul R. Tregurtha, cuz thats a big boat and those waves are huge!!!

  • @deerslayer2446 dude...lake superior doesn't f*uck around when early winter comes. 35ft waves sank the Edmund Fitzgerald. and that was early in the season...no one dares sailing later than that...superior is scary, much more than an ocean

  • Is 3:46 an actual pic of the ship?

  • @LOKISlog7 Not a photo but an "artist consception".

  • @LOKISlog7

probably just a sketch, but thats basically what it looks like on the botom

  • Great video thanks for posting! Melissa from Michigan

  • @MultiMeli123 You are very welcome....Dave.

  • @davidnandavid Must be an inside joke...

  • I just had to watch this video again. All dignity and respect go out to those who lost their lives on the majestic Edmond Fitzgerald.

  • This is such a great presentation, it seems hunting and so close to our soul. I really respect the person that posted this. Thanks.

  • Was it determined if life vests were being worn during the storm? Perhaps there may have been a few survivors if so. We'll never know. Who was Edmund Fitzgerald for whom the ship was named? Perhaps a new ship could be named Edmund Fitzgerald II?

  • Lake superior is 2-4 degrees C year round (Off shore). If you fall in that lake you are dead from hypothermia.

  • The Fitz's was named after the name of the President/Chairman of the Board Edmund Fitzgerald. Life jackets would have done no good. The water was too cold and violent for them to survive that long.

  • I seen something the other day for the 1st time ever, it was about the ww2 german ship that was sunk by the russians, it had about 10,000 people on board fleeing the war. It was -4 degrees out and the water was around 34.. 9,000 died and all 4 captains on board made it off safe and dry ..sad :(

  • It was good. Real good

  • That was truly an amazing tribute!

  • Wow, just when I think I have seen enough "junk"(on YouTube),you present this INCREADABLE piece, whiched seemed reverently, lovingly put together. G.Lightfoots song/wonderful,loveit tho KUDOS to Not using it with this footage! An awsome tribute to each man & his loved ones.4-20 years I have taken up sailing,35+ footers,an Lake MI , S. Haven, never take the lake (or she just might take you)4 granted, 20 miles out and a major storm in Chicago, either batton,or head in,if safe, Kudos 2 coast grd!

  • Music sure is eery.

  • I can't hear the song when I watch this video :(

  • This song still haunts me after all these years.

  • From those photos of ships going through a low pressure cell, you wonder if you are going to see port of call. Can this ship make it through this storm with all hands. Can be a very lonely place to be in harms way.Makes you wonder?Rest well Fitz.

  • Does anyone know where the love of God goes

When the words turn the minutes to hours

The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay

If they'd fifteen more miles behind her.

They might have split up or they might have capsized

They may have broke deep and took water

And all that remains is the faces and the names

Of the wives and the sons and the daughters RIP Those Who we Lost

  • @ChurchloveTex

The WAVES turn the minutes to hours.

  • this video was poasted a day before my birthday a year ago!

  • I remember when it happened. I was at my Grandparents house in Wolverine, MI. at the time and seeing the news headlines. I was only 6. I didn't understand what was going on till we started talking about in school. Now I have a huge interest and have learned a great deal about it. RIP to the crew of the Big Fitz.

  • I live about 75 miles from Whitefish Point, I was just at the Memorial Service there on the 10th. What an experience.

    Your images are awesome.

    Thanks for posting.

    5 *****s!

  • Thank-you for this video. I have always been fascinated with Lake Superior and the frieghters that operate there.

  • DANM the song is sccary

  • I remember that day like it was yesterday.

I was in Cross village Mi blew over a lot of cedars where I hunt, lost of damage, waves...you cant believe this is a lake the waves went into the trees roads washed out, they closed the Macinaw bridge

  • Very calm and quiet on Lake Superior tonight- from this part anyways at Beaver Bay,MN.....compared to 34 years ago tonight. Fitz forever!

  • Lake Superior has near ocean currents and tides. It often gets 25 foot waves. They suspect that the Fitz was held up by two different waves, at least a hundred feet apart. The middle of the ship was not supported by anything so the ship could have easily split apart.

  • no probably not. That did indeed happen to another ship in 1964, cant remember the name. The EF was hit by a rogue wave most likely around 50 feet high or more. Plus she was listing due to taking on water from bottoming out on a shoal

  • This is very eerie.

  • It caired Iron Ore when it sank

  • Tragic Loss.the ship was twisted and broke in half.the ship was heavy on both ends,I was in The Berring Straights right after the 6.6 san francisco quake, waves in the 60 foot range at 100 feet apart 30 deg. rolls for a week,Were nothing compaired to the waves at 20-40 foot at 12 feet apart from all directions on fresh water. There was nothing thay could do. HT US NAVY

  • yup i go up there alot never knew that the waves could get that high!

  • how is it possible for waves to form that high in a lake? that is just insane.. I just found out about this historic tragedy today. R.I.P to those on board...

  • Water is water. The great lakes are large enough where you can have conditions form on them normally only found in storms at sea.

  • I thought the same thing. Then when we were at the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum they explained that the Ocean has thousand of miles for the waves to disapate. The Lake, they compared to putting a little boat in your bathtub, cause a wave in your tub and the water hits the sides and goes every where. They said the Ed. Fitz. was hit with 2 waves going in opposite direction. The full load of Ore also contributed to the sinking. Hope that helps?

  • Well Lake Superior at it deepest is like 1300 feet.

  • Yes, they do sometimes surf on the Great Lakes. I have seen them do it near Duluth, which is located on far western most shore of Lake Superior. I've witnessed waves that went 20' but never the (30' +) that Fitz had to contend with.

  • Is it me or does the Eddie Fitz kinda look like a maritime version of the U.S.S. Discovery from 2001: A Space Odessey?

Also: do the waves of the Great Lakes get so severe that you can literally surf them near the shore?

  • Yep, like machbaby said. There are several surf scenes on the lakes. Search for "Unsalted" and you will see trailers from the best Great Lakes surfing DVD. I know that in Sheboygan, about 45 minutes from me, they can get 14-footers every now and then.

  • Superior its said never gives up her dead , nor do the record companies

  • LOL!

  • Any boat that goes down is a heartbreaker,I know peeps who lived aboard 40 footers, and blew up,even a skiff sunk, makes me eary.

BUT THE E.FITZGERALD,and TITANIC,HAS RUINED ME Inside.

ALL seamen in the watery grave R.I.P.

    I have many bells to ring,I'm from Boston,near Glaucester,and Cape Crud.(Cape Cod).

Thanks for showing the bell,I tapped it 29 times. Honored thanx great video

  • This theory is supported by final radio communications between Anderson and Fitzgerald; Anderson had been struck by two large waves that were heading toward Fitzgerald. If the hull had indeed been breached, it would be difficult to prove. Fitzgerald has settled in mud up to her load marks, making it impossible to inspect for damage.

  • Consequently, she received bottom damage, which caused her to gradually take on water until she sank so suddenly in the deep water that none of her crew had time to react. The ship, pile-driving into the lake bottom, snapped in half, and its stern landed upside-down on the bottom. (If so, given the ship's length vs. the depth of the water, the stern could still have been above water when the bow hit bottom.)

  • @davidnandavid They checked out the shoals that she was supposed to hit. But they found no evidence of a scrapping.

  • The most common alternative theory contends that inoperative radar forced the crew to rely on inaccurate charts. The Canadian and American versions of the same chart placed shoals and shallow water in different places, and failed to mark some shoals at all. As a result, Fitzgerald briefly ran aground or scraped a shoal near Caribou Island without the crew being aware of it.

  • The problem with the ship is that is was far to long, and probably flexed substantially during rolling seas, which likely caused metal fatigue.

  • When she sank...it was into LEGEND.

  • Aesthetically, possibly the most beautiful ore carrier on the Great Lakes-ever.

I've always been fascinated by the tale of this ship and her unfortunate, tragic ending. Lake Superior is beautiful, yet eerily foreboding and haunting at the same time.

  • I cannot believe how long she was. Wow

  • Great video! Even though you had to change the song. Very haunting & well done.

  • great song, lulz 'bout the crash though

  • did the Fitz pass through the St. lawrence seaway

  • god rest their souls

  • What Song Is This?

  • I live in the snow belt of Ontario which is close to Lake Huron. We get lots of snow and the wind is unbelievable during the storms. Always check the radar before traveling in Canada.

  • Navigating on water at your lattitude is an art in itself because the charts and projections (polyconic) are a whole different type.

The great lakes are some of the most difficult maritime navigation on earth.

  • i agree- more ships were lost here than anywhere in the world as far as i know--but the lake is the most powerful body in the world spiritually! -..they do use mercator projections too

  • for some reason the harshnesss of its moods make it also the greatest love and awe in our hearts

  • Having lived on the shores of Superior for a few years and spent time on boats out on the lake, I can tell you the waves at even less than the height the Edmond saw are scary.

  • Actually the Great Lakes aren't lakes at all but inland seas....and although in the video description I noted that not all the pictures were of the Fitz, I didn't mention not all were of the Great Lakes either, my bad.....

  • Some of those pics are of ships on the oceans, not the lakes, however, it has been estimated that rogue waves 50 to 70-foot tall most probably occur on the lakes, mainly Lakes Huron and Superior.

  • i didnt know waves could get that high on a lake those waves look like big rogue waves! god bless the souls of aLL lost.

  • 2:31 WOW

  • Excellent video! I had heard that the family of the crew were not happy when they polished the bell. They wanted it to be left the way it was. Not all polished and new looking.

  • WOW....JUST WOW!

  • THOSE WAVES ARE HUGE 5/5

  • Well done.

  • Excellent tribute.

  • Thank you.....Dave

  • May I take the liberty to ask you to spare a thought for the crew of the Penlee Lifeboat (UK). On December 19th 1981 (nearly 27 years to the day), the Penlee Lifeboat setout from the Cornish coast on a rescue call to the stricken vessel Union Star.

The entire crew of the lifeboat (8 men) were lost, as were the crew of the union star.

God bless all the Lifeboat crews around the world, you truly have "hearts of oak"

  • Thank you for your comment....and Yes, the Penlee is remembered....Dave.

  • theres a version that im not too fond of that's all acoustic. no drums, synth or bass. I like this one better...more haunting.

  • this is the only song that always puts a tear in my eye.

  • They made me change my audio on this one as well as another....but none the less I decided to keep it.

  • nice work
