As much as I admire Piper, I think this clip is a waste of time. Yes, he is passionate (as always). But upon which specific biblical texts did he base his opinions? Jesus is indeed king over all; all includes civil magistrates, who are and always have been charged to act in accordance with God's laws, NOT their own or those of the majority of the populace. I recommend Piper and other believers listen to William Einwechter, Greg Bahnsen, and John Weaver for the truth on social ethics.
@doulos444 I'd prefer he just read the Bible for the truth and retain his current biblical position. Period. Bahnsen et al. would have done well to do the same. Theonomy has little new-covenant foundation. Let's walk as Jesus did. This world is not our home.
Disclaimer: I will say nothing more here, as I am not interested in rebutting replies ad nauseam. Nor is YouTube even a useful venue for true dialogue. I have said my peace. Soli Deo gloria.
Pretty sure that if you watch the YouTube video he references at the start, there is very little positive (if any), he says positive, but it sounded pretty judgmental and it sure sounded like he was playing politics from the pulpit!
We should be guided by faith and not by FEAR, If God wants us to speak to kings and those in authority then we must do it. Our reputation might be in line but our reputation in heaven is what really matters, Obedience is everything!
I can only go by what God tells us to do and that is to pray for our goverment and to follow its laws as long as they do not go agaisnt God which is coming one day.Politics is just like religion, not one of them will get you into heaven. The church is not a building, its the people in the building.Saying your a christian is nothing more than and english word.A relationship is what its all about. The more we talk about the worldly things the happier satan is?When its not bible satans happy.
-At last! 'i don't care who's in the white house, i'm for Jesus'- how refreshing not to see obama slammed down as the devil incarnate-instead, John Piper presents a balanced and refreshing view .
@jncarlos007 in your opinion only. he doesn't seem idiotic to me. but that's not the point. the point is that it seems to me that christians polarise too readily, and should be more balanced, like john piper appears to be.
@68grace Your opinion of him is different than my opinion of him. One of us is right. As a person who spells the word "polarized" I wonder if I have a bit more constant and personal connection to the situation than you, but to each their own. It is true that Christians polarize, it is also true that people who do not want Christians to stand on their beliefs tell them that they are too polarizing. Jesus said he did not come to bring peace, but to set family and friends against each other.
Respond to this video... I do not think he advocated that happening, but was just pointing out that it would. On the other hand, he did say he came to bring the sword to divide. I only try to follow and understand, not redefine...
@jncarlos007 Polarisation is to divide into sharply opposing factions. It occurs when people make statements like 'one of us is right'. Uh, no- I think we would both have good reasons for our opinions, and it is simplistic to call a man an idiot, and not acknowledge any good in him at all. Here in the UK, evangelical Christians are well represented in all our political parties, and clearly stand up for their beliefs. I am a Labour supporter, but do respect our Conservative primeminister.
What about freedom of speech? It's the same old story, accept something from the government and they "own you." Maybe churches should pay taxes and become free to say what they want.
The point is that someone OBVIOUSLY asked him a question about this particular subject. To say that he could have occupied this time for a better purpose is a ridiculous statement.
hmmm, -not so sure what the point of this is. Seemed like a kind of ego thing. under this heading he could have certainly occupied six minutes for a lot better purpose.
Everything he said is right on EXCEPT that bit about "Republicans don't care about racial justice". WRONG. No one cares about that more than I do, & I know lots of Republicans who feel the same way.
@jimmmmie Well there are some democrats who are "anti-abortion" does that mean that the democratic party cares about the pro-life stance? Of course not. Piper was merely making a generalistic blanket statement, and if you accept it as that then it is true. He was not saying that every individual republican does not care about "racial justice". How come people nowadays are not able to generalize without making somebody angry? Generalizations are often needed to express deeper truths.
The church should NOT become a political power, we have seen time and time again, in Biblical teaching and in historical lessons that religious institutions gaining power in government leads to bad things, because both the government and the church become corrupt!
The first thing I would tell him is to repent to God regarding his obamanation of the Bible, oops did I spell that Wrong? Then I would Tell him to read the book of Daniel and so that he may understand what becomes of men who do not glorify Gods name and falsely believe their positions of power were by their own work..Daniel the prophet warned and they chose not to listen. Ego's, they are almost as big of a killer in the eyes of God then pride .
