I know and played bass with a famous rock guitarist that was on Shindig in 1965. I asked him why the song his band was singing was shortened- no last verse- he told me that they recorded LIVE, and incorporated any arrangement changes into the performance- like shortening, leaving a verse out- for the occasional TIME constraints of t.v.. When they performed on the show, they'd play the LIVE recorded track from earlier in the day, with LIVE vocals.
I am a New Yorker- Queens, to be exact- I bought all their singles, '65-'66. Love them, still do. They were the response, in a way, to the British Invasion, and thank GOD they were already making great music. R.I.P., Zal Yanovsky... Zal was a killer...this sounds as good as it did 46 years ago, (!) and that's amazing right there. These guys, The four Seasons, and and the Rascals, were THE quintessential New York City bands.
@bigbass421...and dont forget The Left Banke....and although she wasn't a band, she was one of our Jersey girls...Lesley Gore :) ^5 (I was a 60's kid--born in Teaneck, NJ) listened non-stop to Cousin Brucie & Dan Ingram on WABC and Murray The K on WNEW)
That '59 Les Paul...WOW I think that's the earliest video of someone in a 60's Band playing one. I'm wonderin' if Bloomfield had already traded for Dan Erlewine's 'Burst? 1965 is pretty early and I know Mike used a Tele at Newport with Dylan.
If it is lip-synched, it's not to the studio version of either song. Both have non-studio vocals and guitar work. Yet, the instruments don't appear to be plugged in. Maybe they recorded something earlier , and synched to that.
A lot of these shows were lip-synched due to the technology limits of the time. For instance American Bandstand had their artists lip-synch their performance save for Jerry Lee, and the Yardbirds due to their music being a bit more accomodating to the environment.
Wow George Hunter! I thought I was the only person that remembered him. Globe Propaganda was his art studio and did all those great 60s covers like the girl on the blue cover for It's A Beautiful Day album. He was the mastermind behind the Charlatans look which I dug ever since reading about them in Rolling Stone.

@PixieDust19962 ** I HUNG OUT WITH ZALLY FOR A WHILE IN ABOUT 1966 or 67..THE FIRST GUY I EVER WENT OUT WITH THAT HAD LONG HAIR..COOL GUY LOTS OF FUN..
Yeah, Zal was nutty in a good way. He seemed to be the most naturally extroverted, zany one of the group; a very freewheelin' kind of dude. I met him at his restaurant in Kingston, Ontario. He had a cool ,laid-back quality to him. But he was still shrewd and practical enough to run a successful restaurant (great food too!).
very very talented, and they were something else I enjoy, goofy as hell, I have alot of respect for those who allow their inner goofiness out for the world to see. lol
This group was, and likely ever shall be, incomparable. There was only one group anything like this. Jug band music/rock/folk/whatever-else-flew-in-the-window all mixed up in one glorious recipe.
and u could bone them and thy wouldnt get intentionally pregnant or sue u for harrassment..like todays bitches who are all con artists and extortionists and they hire some big mouth woman jew lawyer and sue your balls off and humiliate you in the press and media..
but back in 1965 rock stars and star athletes could get laid have fun without worrying about being set up
wow ! I envy that you met one of the Sebastians..awesome. My only claim to fame is that I met Ann & Nancy Wilson of HEART in a coffee house in Surrey, British Columbia in March, 1992. I'll never forget it (all Nancy talked about was Jimmy Page !! lol)(my band, Chelsea Morning was playing in the Pacific Northwest back then and we met them PURELY by chance..it was shocking!!)
yeah, knew Zal was gone..r.i.p--used to love these guys when I was a kid (John & the guys got started in Greenwich Village folk scene in my native nyc)

greatest bands from Brit Invasion & America--it's NEVER been repeated
I met Mark Sebastian, John's younger brother a singer in his own right and now a real estate salesmen in New York had dinner he was a cowriter on "Summer in the City" interesting guy who shed some new light on the Spoonies for me. Like you grew up on there music, but here in L.A.. Loved all the music whether it was from here or across the pond....good is good...bad is bad.
@DrHogfan yes joe butler acted in some plays but never made the transition to tv shows but his daughter did then there was some acusation that the daughter physicaly abused her father
Ya know something...this was the first time I ever saw a Sunburst Les Paul Standard. I never remembered until I saw this video again!!! I still want a modded Guild Thunderbird like Zal's.
heard them live at fordham univ. bronx ny about a million years ago and they were live and better than the disc (vinyl) ... they could sing and play live... not just a studio group
Was John's lead vocal live? Agreed that they're playing to prerecorded tracks, as nobody's plugged in and only John has a mike. Shindig, Hullabaloo and the lot didn't want any onstage surprises like noisy amps or botched chords. In any event, Zal's solos are wonderful and the harmonies are clearer and more out front than on the records. It's great to see this bit o' the past.
Shows like Shindig were vehicles to showcase all the different music (soul, pop,etc)..there were so many singers on an episode..maybe that's why we heard only a couple of verses..
Did Shindig have some sort of rule against performing 2nd verses? Both songs jumps straight from verse 1 to the bridge.
I guess Steve Boone recorded the electric piano beforehand, as it's extremely audible but not at all visible. (And Boone is busy on the bass.) A funny mix of live and not live.
Agreed, It's basically a lip sync'd performance. The lead break was played on a Fender VI bass that had a capo on the fourth fret, which you hear in this version. Shindig/ABC wanted to pack as many different artists and songs into a show as possible, and abbreviated versions were common, but not always the rule. Check out Little Richard - Whole lotta shakin' going on on you tube. 4:20 of Rock and Roll genius.
@modernpolitics The only live track on this video is Sebastian doing the lead, even the backround track is recorded, they did that alot back then except the Sullivan show.
@modernpolitics I think it had something to do with the time factor. I'm sure the Spoons themselves weren't happy about what had to have been a forced editing. I've heard the live albums the Beatles made during their tours and more often than not they'd have to chop out a verse to get more songs in. Really disappointing and that's why I never got those albums. Nice to see Steve contributing vocals for a change, though, on Make Up Your Mind.
@modernpolitics Even if it's only half-live, "Believe in Magic" sounds better here than on the studio version. It's a little more soulful and spontaneous.
@modernpolitics they must be singing live over a pre recorded background track the guitars arent plugged in and the guitar solos are differant than the record
I don't think that's the record's instrument track on "Do You Believe In Magic". The guitar solo is somewhat different, as are Zal's guitar fluorishes toward the end of the song. On "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind", the drumming is not the same as the record, either.
Shindig was way ahead of the other R&R shows on TV at the time. Just look at all the geat performers that appeared there!
