The WP was seriously damaged by the DL defection. Like any Left Wing Party in Ireland it has a difficult road to travel in a country that is largely conservative politically speaking. Old hatreds smolder on the the north, and in the south the country is still unable to shake off the shackles of Civil War era political parties. There are hopeful signs, however.
I hear from reliable sources they the W P ,are re emerging north and south of the border?? I think the people are awakening, now they are examining carefully the right wing provos! We await
Reply to gordieK. That may well be true or not depending on your particular viewpoint . I will not dispute you here, as much you hint at I agree with as an old Stick...some I disagree with, as was the loss of life worth the minimal return? However, that was not the point of the video...it was (is) to honour those members of the Officials who lost their lives in the period of the "recent Troubles". May they rest in peace!
Lectures on marxism were no good to people being burned out of their homes. The officials were deluded in '72. At least the Provies fought the brits to the negotiating table.
The Workers' Party has been visibly and vocally involved in all the agitations regarding the current economic crisis in solidarity with other groups. I admit our participation may seem small, but our membership has been fairly small since the defection of the DL crowd and the subsequent damage that did our Party. However, small or large is not the point. We ARE involved, and it will take ALL to be involved now to make a difference. Thanks for posting.
I don't understand why in the 1970s when conditions were not nearly as receptive to an 'Irish Citizens Army' type group, the Officials were out - as is detailed in the book "The Lost Revolution" - taking action against property developers/defending squatters and putting it up to strike breakers. Whereas today, with the IMF running the economy, people being evicted and what little they have being seized by the sheriff, and our billions of natural resources being stolen, nothing is done.
I understand that you might not be able to answer any of that - or that it may not be any of my business - but the OIRA never decommissioned, am I right ?
With those DL yahoos out of the way - is it not time to go back to the revolutionary blend of political and 'physical' politics of the early 1970s ?
The Working class people would support it. Maybe not yet, but give conditions a little while to deteriorate in 2011, and keep these options open !
@adameden1000 Sectarian Warfare! was a result of 'The Provo Campaign' read some of our history.....pogroms against a hapless community ...throught out the twenties, thirties, and the Fifites and sixties....Remember 14 Aug 1969...'Bombay Street'...
