I think if there would exist 3 versions of duke forever i think the 1998 version would be the superior one, most cuz it was made when 3D realms tried to make a funny game rather than to reinvent FPS and overshine all the other games out there, or even worse make the game as a joke. but i also think the 98version would be awesome cuz it has airplanes!!! 3:11

All in their own quake-based engine. Now we have ripped Unreal engine, which is already old with still newer version of Source engine coming

I can kind of see why this jumped so many engines. Honestly, better technology does benefit the cinematic quality and they can obviously pull off a lot of stuff that just wasn't capable back in 1998 and even in the 2000 era. I totally get what 3D realms was going for, utter perfection. But I would have played this game regardless.

The early design of DNF looks a bit like Quake and Half Life to me, with some areas looking more like one game. Some parts though look revolutionary and wise ideas thought of for this early design. Looks pretty good, this could have sold fairly well were it released that early.

Gearbox Software is currently finishing DNF (with Ex-3DR Employees).
