Isn't everybody like that? Being totally honest with your feelings with no censorship, can be disastrous. (Like in a job interview, lol or answering does my bum look big in this?)
hey oborogin sensei since i live probably 20 minutes away from the Bronx, maybe one day i can go partying with you and meet some of your many girlfriends eh? haha
agree .. when im out i'll here ppl speaking portuguese and spanish .. and they think ppl cant understand then because there not portuguese or spanish .. i just listen to them and laugh cause i can understand what there saying but they dont know i can =)
Hehe, I LOVE it when Japanese presume that gaijins don't understand them =D
You know though, I think when I go on vacation with my wife, especially where there are no Japanese people around, I talk with my wife in Japanese about things that I might think but never actually say in English. I think people suddenly feel like they are invisible and can talk say what they think, as if by telepathy, which is fun, but it makes things pretty awkward when people understand you.
The stereotypical English stiff upper lip is probably the same as 建前 I think.
We (English) have a tendency to hide behind manners - I guess because of the class differences in our history. So, it's common for us to say one thing but to mean something completely different.
But still, it's always funny to see someone get caught out like that. :o)
I feel Japanese culture and English culture are historically similar. In a way, it might be said that lip service "Tatemae" works for avoiding troubles socially...
But, keeping balance of the way for using "Tatemae" is important.

That's a pretty typical English thing as well!
