What a voice! Like dark chocolate! And brilliant acting - French mannerisms and accent wonderful. But is he really a baritone? I thought he was a bass??? Also, PLEASE is there no DVD of this Camelot production?
He sang this at his recent recital with Mandy Patinkin at Ravinia. Along with "Largo al factotum," "If Ever I Would Leave You," "Shenandoah," and others. (Swoon!)
I'm kindof astounded that there are no Merlin fanvideos using these songs. Like.... really? This has been out for so long, and no one's done it, yet??
Do you know if this is out on DVD? o.0 I would like to have it in Concert form. I have the movie but I never knew this was a concert version. You know ? James Barbour would be perfect for this part too. <3
Gunn is amazing -- that goes without saying. My quibble is that the director appears not to have connected this song to anything that comes after. They went for the humor, which is of course a crowd-pleaser and Gunn does it to perfection, but then it's all about Lancelot's purity and stiffness in the rest of the show. It just sticks out a bit. But I adore Gunn.
WOW! Whatta hunk! But, better than that, he really can sing! OMG, whoever he is, I am now his biggest fan......jeese, I dont usually lose my head, but he really rocks my boat! THANK YOU for posting this on You Tube.......
I don't think Franco Nero did his own singing in the film "Camelot". They probably should have let him. I think Gunn does a very respectable version. Robert Goulet (the Broadway Lancelot) would probably be pleased with Gunn as "heir" to the Lancelot role. The only weakness I see in Gunn's version is he plays Lancelot as vain. Lancelot's weakness was that he sincerely believed he could be pure and unseducible if he so willed it. He believes everything he's saying. This explains why he fell.
@MsTruNorth I completely agree with your interpretation of Gunn's performance. Unfortunately, this whole television production was miserably directed. None of the leads had any help pulling together a classy show. When you compare the excellent direction Josh Logan gives Nero to consistently maintain, in all those different locations, that earnest, angelic heroism you realize how at a loss was Gunn. But, there's no doubt about it - Gunn can sing!
LOL. I could be getting close to that. When I really like something I keep on watching it. I've always been so big on Lancelot du lac. The character has been my idol for 23 years now and I try to live my life in the way he does. :)
Sorry Lundriel ... I agree with feelthejoy. Keep comments pertinent to the video.
But thanks so much for your wonderful postings of Nathan Gunn ... WHAT an incredible voice singing songs from Camelot - a show I never did care for but now am listening to all day long thanks to his smoldering voice.
@vermontfudge1 They all perform in all languages. I've heard him perform in English, German, Italian and French. He also performs in Russian and Finnish.
@Luindriel Of 8 upcoming Nathan Gunn performances, in 2011, 3 out of 5 are in English and the 3 listed for 2012 are all in English. Compare to other Americans- Paul Groves has 3 listed for 2011, none in English. Susan Graham has 7 listed for 2011, none in English. John Relyea has 5 listed for 2011, none in English. Deborah Voigt has 6 listed for 2011, none in English. Renee Fleming has 6 performances listed for 2011, none in English. Per well known opera site (google won't allow link)
@stevevandien I agree that in terms of quality of voice Gunn seems Goulet's equal. I think even Goulet would acknowledge that Gunn has something more with this role by playing it French (with an accent). Where I think Goulet had a tighter grasp on the role was that he understood that this piece "C'est Moi" is meant to explain the naivity and innocence of Lancelot's character, so that we understand what happens later. Goulet had the authors directing him though. Gunn didn't.
@puppetoz So does Lancelot. When he says he's not boasting, he really isn't. He believes every word he's saying. That's why he was so unprepared for his powerful reaction to Guinevere's seduction of him. The song that explains Guinevere's character (as "C'est Moi" explains Lancelot's) is "Where are the Simple Joys of Maidenhood". Guinevere is not ready to be settled in marriage.
Gabriel Byrne was Arthur. I uploaded a whole bunch of videos from the production and put them in a playlist. They might even be in order... (I tried but wasn't sure...)
You'll find them if you go to my channel page and click on "Playlists."
OK, time to cut off the silly comments. If you don't like the video and want to comment, please explain why without insulting anyone (including Nathan) and without bringing up irrelevant points. Otherwise I might just have to use my "delete" power and block you from posting. Before you hit post, ask yourself what your mother would say about what you wrote. ;)
But my initial issue with his Lancelot is that he sings musical theatre with an overwrought classical technique at the expense of the words. Anyone who likes that is not theatre or musical theatre savvy.
furhtermore, you keep calling me 'sir' which only shows your tendency to assume things, be it my gender or Mr. Gunn's singing prowess.
I'm sorry, but I must disagree. I can understand his diction perfectly, even with his hammy French accent. True, the classical technique may seem a bit out of place, but I do not find that it somehow diminishes the appeal of his performance. In fact, Mr. Gunn sings this with great characterization and uses the music and words to great effect.
I believe there are some absolutes in art. It is not this wishy washy "oh, it is just my opinion" garbage. Mr. Gunn is a totally unremarkable baritone. He is wise to have taken a teaching position at the University of Illinois. He is also wise not to try to push his rather limited instrument into a more career-making operatic repertoire. The Met is not hiring him for roles that could be viably within his fach. That is because there are many others who can to it with more distinction.
Just because somebody sings with the New York Philharmonic does not mean they are beyond reproach. He is a nice man I am sure, and as a performer he is generic. He does not challenge anybody. He is easy and non-controversial. I can see why people like him...he is pretty and he is there and he produces pretty tones...Pretty, pretty, pretty...it doesn't mean anything but it is pretty....and that should count for something in an age of the dumming down of America.
You are entitled to your opinion as am I. I think your suggestion that unless I am at the top a singing career like he IS, I should refrain from talking, is fascist. Sorry if my comments did not fit your carefully constructed notion of reality.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think it sucks...are you people unicorns? He is oversinging. His voice is dull and does not have a ping and he has no clue what the words mean. He is a vacuous person who is very lucky to have a career.
Whoah... what's with the attack? (and I've never heard of calling someone a unicorn as an insult??) What does oversinging mean? What's with the "vacuous person" comment? Actually he's not... but either way, that would have nothing to do with the performance. It doesn't sound to me like your issue is with this performance. Discussions of musical merit are great. Personal attacks on the performers and/or fans are not necessary. Can you clarify your musical commentary?
There is no need to be so negative over this partivular performance. There are far less talented people in this world having great careers, nonetheless trying to bring them down and calling people names is not the best thing to do...
You do know that C'est Moi is a comic song, right? In this scene, Lancelot is supposed to be a pompous preening ass, and IMHO Mr. Gunn plays it to perfection. As for your criticisms of his voice, I have no clue what you're talking about. I think he has a lush lyrical baritone that fits the role like a glove. Before attacking the commenters here, you might want to check out a few of the reviews; the NY Times music critic described Mr. Gunn's performance as "triumphant".
really?? The New York Times called his performance "triumphant"...well, I stand corrected. If the New York Times said so, then it must be true. Sorry to have caused everyone so much headache. I will be sure and read the NYTimes reviews before I post my attacks in the future.
operas6, you're obviously entitled to your own opinion, but your original post implied that the people who liked the peformance were tastless idiots. If we're all idiots, then so are many of the critics, and as between the NY Times music critic and you, I certainly know whose opinion I value and trust more.
I am so sorry for my original post. I have to admit that my comments toward Mr. Gunn and his performance came from professional jealousy and personal failures.
How very droll of you. Yes, I do know who Sherrill Milnes is, and I also have met your type before--a know-it-all who has to show how superior he is by dumping on the opinions of others from a great height. I'm sure that your critical facilities and judgment are far superior to those of the New York critics (who almost without exception raved about Mr. Gunn's performance), so I will leave you to your quest for voices that "ping".
You're welcome! One of the programs I use to chop up the DVD kept freezing on me today... I did eventually get it. I'll finish it tomorrow (meaning, I use my computer at work, shhhhh!) and will get it on tomorrow evening. :)
