  • 7 people dislike this video! Inconceivable!

  • i know the samurai strongly believed in "honor" but they wouldnt dare do that..come on now ...give your weapon to a man your gonna kill ..hell no

  • 1:04 a swordsman gives his sword to his enemy to observe ..a man he doesnt know but trust for some reason ..and he gives it back to him ..that was a first for me when i saw this movie as a kid .took me by surprise

  • @fashizze I know! I remember that caught my attention when I first saw this movie! 10 years ago. I was 7. :)

  • @LittleMissRachelLee i first saw it when i was 10 back in 1988

  • Always makes me smile. Great performance by the both of them.

  • God... they love septeme.

  • "I ought to admit you are better then I am."

    '"Then why are you smiling?"

"Because I know something you don't know."

    "What is that?"

    "I am not left-handed."

    :D

  • 'I am...also left handed' is one of the greatest lines ever uttered by a human being.

  • "You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you"

"YOU seem a decent fellow, I hate to die."

    LoL

  • i know something you don't know

  • 7 people have no taste in great hit movies

  • "Who are you?"

    "No one of consequence"

    "I must know!"

  • @BitterYouth Get use to disappointment.

  • One of the best sword fights in the history of film. PERIOD.

  • wesley knew inigo was an honarable man who could be trusted after inigo gave him his sword to observe.that even took me by surprise as a kid when i first saw this movie

  • Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

  • The stance he takes at 5:05 is very typical of classic Spanish rapier. It puts as much of the sword between you and your opponent as possible, and the forward arm is protected behind the hilt. As soon as you see or create a line of attack, you step forward leading with the sword and continue past the enemy. Watch a Tango sometime, and imagine it with swords.

  • "I just work for Vezzini to pay the bills. There's not a lot of money in revenge."

    God, I love this movie.

  • i never understood why inigo does that silly lookin pose at 5:05

  • @fashizze I am fairly certain that that was an actual form. I could be wrong, mind you, but I am all but positive I have seen it used elsewhere.

  • if wesley had six fingers ."hello my name is inigo montoya you kill my father prepare to die" .and he would have done him right handed

  • INCONCEIVABLE!!!!!!

  • Every piece of dialogue in this movie is brilliant, a classic!

  • "There's something you don't know. I am not right handed either"

    "..."

    *switches to teeth*

  • why don't movies nowadays have fight scenes as classic as this?

  • "Do you always begin conversations this way?"

  • Fencing is such a noble and beautiful sport...and really really hot!!

  • I'm not left handed ;D

  • ....Amazing.

  • that's a great fuckin scene. Will Goldman knew what he was doing.

  • *knocks him unconscious* ''pleasa understand i hold you in the highest respect''

  • It's the highest order of Flynning- you can tell by the fact that they're making absolutely no real effort to actually hit each other. But in a movie as much camp good fun as this it's perfectly appropriate and massively entertaining.

  • @ArcaneAzmadi it actually makes sense considering their honor for each other. its more like a spar than a duel.

  • 1:15-1:25 ..I don't get it .the six fingered man wanted the sword but he didnt take it after he killed inigo's father .doesnt make sense

  • @fashizze it is explained in the book.

  • @persephonewillow why didnt he take it

  • You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.

You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.

  • i love it ..inigo could have killed wesly as soon as he helped him over the cliff ..but his honor would have been tainted .

  • I really need to get that pirate outfit...

  • I love how the man in black is played by the same actor who played Robin Hood in "Men in Tights".

"Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent."

  • @xeractus Cary Elwes is a fantastic actor, and did all his own fencing and such in this movie. Incredible when you see how carefully they prevent showing Inigo's face in this scene.

  • @xeractus Lol.

  • "Do you always begin conversations this way?"

  • The same choreographer did the Jack Sparrow duel in the blacksmith shop in "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the first one). Hence many similarities!!

  • tha twas a good one?

my name is enyago man toy a , you killed my father , prepare to die ?

  • i just love inigo's honor, courtesy, charm and generosity before the fight ,he helps wesley up the cliff ,then tells a tired wesley to rest first until he's ready .has a conversation..and hands wesley his sword with full trust ..terrific scene...no wonder wesley didnt kill him

  • "I do not mean to pry, but you don't, by any chance, happen to have six fingers on your right hand?"

  • love this scene

  • Favorite part:

    Inigo: "Who are you?"

Man in Black: "No one of consiquence."

    Inigo:"I must know."

Man in Black:"Get used to dissapointment."

    Inigo:"-Shrugs-"

    -Sword Fight Continues-

  • 4:15 Crowning Moment of Awesome :3

  • @Suthek I take it you've been to tvtropes too.

  • @grysch indeed

  • Oddly, Rob Reiner considers this to be the second-best sword fight in film - he likes Inigo v Rugen better, not because of it's technical skill but because of its emotional impact.

I on the other hand prefer this one, because it's much more varied.

  • Here's one of the most poetic and "educative" fight scenes ever made. No senseless special effects and hopeless dialogues. Wish they still made movies like this....and the music from Mark Knoplfer is just brilliant. This belongs to some of my childhood best memories....

  • @RangioN2 knopflers screenplaying is one of the best soundtracks ive ever heard.

and the timing to each scene makes it all the better

  • That. . .Was. . .EPIC!!

  • No movie has ever produced a better duel. That's right, eat it, Star Wars. And Chronicles of Narnia! You eat it as well!

  • Who the FUCK downrated this?

  • "You've done nothing but study swordplay?"

"More pursue than study lately.. you see, I can no' find him. It's been 20 years now, I'm starting to lose confidence. I just work for Vicini to pay the bills. There's not a lot of money in revenge..."

Cracks me up every time, especially after the dramatic 'Hallo. My name is...' :D

  • "Do you always begin conversations this way?"

  • This was an excellent sword fight from a non-technical perspective.

Mostly Flynning, but that stands to reason seeing as this fight wasn't two people fighting intensely for serious personal reasons, but two masters testing each others' proficiency.

  • @FallibleLikeTheRest Agreed, they both make it clear that neither wants to kill the other. Plus, this fight (and the ensuing duels) were more about characterization than serious battle. Inigo DOES start to lose composure and get frustrated at the end, though. It's like as soon as he holds the sword with both hands Wesley just knows he's already won. That's a little bit technical for ya.

  • What a great film...

  • I love the captions

"My name is Jim, keep your mind"

  • " I would hate to kill you". "you seem like a decent man I'm ashamed to die". LOL classic movie

  • i just work for vizzini to pay the bills.... there's not a lot of money in revenge

  • iñigo was a hell of swordman. i remember at the end of the movie he owned three or more( i dont remember)guards like they were nothing.

  • Sexiest movie ever.

  • Sixteen?! THE VIETNAMESE?!?!

    HOW DARE HE?!?

  • What do you get when you cross Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and swords? One of the most epic fight scenes in movie history!!!

  • you can see the mattress outline at 3:34, 3:38 and 4:39. Regardless, this movie is one of the most epic of all time. It's funny and action packed.

  • Please understand I hold you in the highest respect.

  • "Because I Know something you don't know"

    "What is that?"

    "I'm not left-handed!"

"There is something I oughta tell you"

    "Tell me"

    "I'm not left-handed either"

  • I like when Wesley revealed that he wasn't left-handed, either

  • "You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you"

"You seem a decent fellow. Is hate to die"

  • lol if you put on transcribe audio subs for this when he says "my name is inigo montoya" instead it says "my name is jim" in the subs

  • @tacoblocko

    ZOMG!!!! HAHAHA It really does~!

  • @tacoblocko

Also, when he points to his scars and says "and these", the captions say

    "the Vietnamese"

  • Inigo was my favorite character reading this. I didn't even really care what happened to westley and buttercup I just wanted to see inigo kill the toolbag count.

  • yes - great fencing scene....great book also by the way ... respect to William Goldman (that was the authors name, no?) BUT: what a lousy filmscore! who made this soundtrack??? A set runner? Things like that should be forbidden... ;-)

  • I know Mark Knopfler wrote at least part of the soundtrack...

  • @christiangerber1 i think the point was for it to be cheesy, hence the intense synth sound.

  • This was back, of course, when movies relied on realistic swordplay. Wish we would see more of that on the modern screen. As a fencer I almost feel offended by current day fight scenes.

  • I hear ya man, nowadays all it is is flips and spins which this clip does include but doesn't rely on them. I too am a fencer but there is something I know that you do not... I AM NOT LEFT HANDED

  • @LegendaryBlade It's not terribly realistic, but compared to the tripe that passes for swordplay in modern cinema, it's bloody good. The last duel that I remember enjoying was the one in Rob Roy. The final duel in Revenge of the Sith was pretty good too, but it needed to be viewed at half speed.

  • HA!!! Trying to kill each other and yet still commending each other. This movie is so stupid, and that's why it's so great!!!!! I love whoever made this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this movie was awesomeeeeeeeeeee one of the best

  • this movie was so cliche that it became non-cliche... or perhaps even a meta-cliche. This makes it wonderful, and not crap.

  • This is probably my favorite sword duel in any movie ever.

  • Agreed

  • @darthmix i so agree!

  • @darthmix Mine, too. I love "Who are you? No one of consequence. I MUST know. Get used to disappointment." CLASSIC

  • @darthmix obi wan kenobi vs anakin skywalker is about equal to this

  • Classic, classic, classic :)

  • Excellent!

  • This is best fight i've ever seen! Two men fighting each other and complementing each others while they are trying to kill each others O.O

  • Comedy yes, but also, the movie is set in a time when honor, "your word", and honesty were more important then death.

  • best book ever

  • GIDEON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we watched this in theater class 2day and i like freaked out (in the good way) when i found out mandy was in this movie! he is AMAZING and i luv this movie! this scene is 1 of my favs :D and i need 2 add tht i fell in luv with the 1 in black. he is so sexy. *melts

  • My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die.

  • Omg! I remember this from class! This was a great movie, cliche, but still funny. 8)

  • whats cliche, and this movie is perfect so its not cliche haha

  • It's supposed to be cliche, that's part of the humor of it.

  • I was in the 6th or 7th grade when the teacher played this movie for the entire class.

At first i thought it was going to be boring but as the movie played on i found myself in the edge of my seat, just hooked. Great times.

  • Scaramouche and The Mark of Zorro 1940 are great sword fights too!!!!

  • Absolutely brilliant........Are there any fencers out there? I got Bonetti's defense, but what are the other two? Caofeira? Hisagrippa? Just wondering thanks.

  • CAPO FERO - italian rapier master late 17th century, first to describe the 'botta lunga' - the lunge.

Camillo AGRIPPA ("studied his Agrippa"), 16th century italian side sword master, first to emphasise thrust over cut.

TYBALT: character in Romeo and Juliet!

    :)

  • @MarkHolgate

Gerard Thibault was a Dutch fencing master who wrote a treatise in the 17th Century.

  • ah yes! didn't recognise the pronounciation! So "Thibault cancels out capo ferro' is (pseudo)Spanish school against Italian rapier. Thanks for clearing that up.

And Bonetti ran a fencing school near Blackfriars. Not much known about what he taught, only that it was italian in style, and that he was mortally wounded by a yeoman.

  • Bravo!

  • if you fight with rapiers does that make you a rapist?

  • yes

  • I guess not more than usual

  • Best. Swordfight. Ever.

  • Comment removed

  • what were the other 2?

  • I think one was on mst3k and the 2nd i cant remember where

  • thats interesting.i thought this was the only one with a 6 fingered villian.

  • one of the sword duels ever. ever.

  • best scene ever of any movie!!!

  • It's amazing the conversations people have when they're trying to kill each other...

    "You're amazing."

"I should be, after 20 years."

"You don't by any chance have six fingers on your right hand?"

"Do you always start conversations this way."

  • don't forget,

"You seem a decent fellow i hate to kill you."

"You seem a decent fellow I hate to die."

  • I love this scene! Also, does anyone know the name of the song that plays at the beginning of the scene, when Inigo is talking about his father? I've always wanted to know, but I could never find it...

  • @Anake11

Guide My Sword- by Mark Knopfler from The Princess Bride Orginal Soundtrack.

Get this bad boy on Itunes for the easiest find.

  • :0 Thanks!!

  • Masterpiece!

  • people always asume this movie is girly by its cover. but it pwns

  • The man in black is based off of a Douglas Fairbanks character from a silent film, not Zorro.

  • best part of the movie.. I really should read the book some time...

  • the book is very interesting....different from the movie, but a must read. i find it a bit sexist, however - but then again, all fairy tales are.

  • It's not sexist in itself, it actually mocks sexist fairy tales.

  • good post!

  • I never liked this sort of film when i was a kid but I always liked this one.

  • Wonderful scene! I miss the days when great fight scenes didn't need CGI or trapeze artists...

  • The man in black won because Ingo hasn't really been practicing his moves. Just read the book. Some answers are in there.

  • yeah. wasn't Inigo better in among the rocks and trees and the man in black in the open. Inigo had more specialized skills. Remember the other part where he fights the fruit bats in the dark? I really loved the book, but the sequel was a real downer.

  • i would compare inigo to antonio banderas.. too bad that wasnt the actor, i dont know THIS guy. i mean no offense cuz hes amazing!! i dont know how the man in black won!

  • Inigo is played by Mandy Patinkin who was on Broadway.

  • .....At 5:22 he throws the sword from his left hand to his right...nice move..

  • inigo Montoya is one of the greatest characters of all time! The guy who plays him absolutely owns this role!!!! i almost want to compare him to heath ledger....

  • "You seem a decent fellow; I hate to kill you."

"You seem like a decent fellow; I hate to die."

My FAVORITE line from the entire movie!!! I love the witty humor in this movie!! :)

  • how about:

you put down your rock, i put down my sword, and we try and kill each other like civilized people?

  • "Get used to disappointment."

    "... 'Kay."

  • qwhooo r you?

  • This movie is so great.

  • Who are you?...classic

  • AWSOME MOVIE!!!!! MY FAVORITE SCENE!!! Been watching this movie since i was like 4 years old...I LOVE IT!!

  • same lol

  • Supercool movie. A real gem in film. Too bad everything today is computer generated with the focus on effects rather than dialogue and plot.

  • I love 3:50.

    "I am not left handed!"

  • Best movie sword fight scene ever.

  • lol i remember how they're just having a conversation as westley is hanging for his life .

"its a shame that im going to have to kill you"

"...that does put a damper on our relationship"

haha i love there polite conversations as they're trying to kill each other. epic movie

  • i know i watched this movie a few days ago still love it one of my all time favorite movies

  • I love this movie. I admit when Buttercup had that nightmare sequence it freaked me out as a kid.

  • the man in black looks like zorro

  • Such gentlemen.

  • One of my favorite sword fights of all time! :) One of the others is also in this movie.

  • haha this scene is what got me into rapier combat :P

  • The natural way the guy playing Inigo acts is simply amazing, what an actor, totally and completely believable.

  • my brother did fencing for 3 years he did eppe and this is as close to fighting sabre as his ever got.

  • after wesley went right handed then he got the advantage over inigo and it ended alot sooner ..

  • Quite possibly the greatest family movie of all time. Films avertised as "fun for the whole family" are usually BS, but "The Princess Bride" is great if you're 7, 17, 27, 37, 47, 57 67, 87, 97, or 107. I've never met someone who didn't like it. I don't think I'd want to met someone who didn't like it.

  • that would b weird! they did the play at my school so everyone loves it!

  • The man in black is who I.m going to be for halloween....or maybe for the rest of my life!..Ha Ha!

  • where will you find a sword similar though?

  • Who are you?

    No one of consequence.

    I must know.

    Get used to dissappointment!

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! =D

  • k

the nonchalance in Indigo's response never fails to get a chuckle out of me

  • This scene? Love it!

  • ...I know something that you do not know!

    I AM NOT LEFT HANDED!!!

  • IM NOT LEFT HANDED EITHER

  • If there is a more entertaining duel in all of cinema, please tell me about it.

  • There is none that I have seen! This duel got me into swords since I was 4 haha.
