A good friend of mine was on that aircraft carrier, the Abraham Lincoln, that the F-18 took off from.  He told me he didn't think it was a mechanical malfunction, or that both engines went out, which the navy told him. He said that the marines were doing test missions with soldiers that just came out of fly school. This was one of the first times this pilot had ever flown in an F-18. No joke.

No, he didn't do everything he could. He could have ditched in the ocean; he was coming from the west anyway. He could have put down a couple hundred yards offshore, ejecting before the plane hit the water. A rescue helicopter or lifeguard boat could have picked him within a few minutes. But no... after all, only a few innocent civilians died; no big, right?

He was on approach to Miramar, which means he was well over land already, at approach speeds for landing (which means he's right above stalling) so if he was to lose the engines or if another mechanical issue such as a malfunctioning control surface was to happen he wouldn't be able to just turn it around. It's not that simple, and it wasn't the pilot's fault.

If you want to be mad at the air station being there with neighborhoods around, chances are that the base was there first, and the suburbs crept in and around the Miramar Air Station, much like any other major air field these days with people complaining about noise and safety when the airport was there first before anything else. Blame the city for allowing such constructions for being there.

He was trying to land the plane at the airfield about a mile away. The neighborhood is right off the end of the runway. It appears the aircraft gave up, the pilot attempted to aim the aircraft at a nearby canyon and bailed out. Unfortunately the plane missed the canyon by only two house...

It could have been a fod issue leaving the carrier, a bird ingestion or for that matter it could have even been an "unscheduled failure"... Don't assign blame until you see the accident investigation report!

omg i saw this on the news earlier. the pilot was able to eject right before the jet crashed. i feel so bad for the people who lost their lives. may they rest in peace. also i'd hate to be the pilot... i'd feel so guilty. but then again im sure it was not his fault and some mech prob.
