You don't need to be a stick-insect to be a fabulous singer! This girl has alot of potential and has a really strong voice! I've played this in jazz, and it was really fun, now i need to persuade them to arrange it into a vocal number... hmmmm
@halifaxcitadel you lost sight of this performance. you focused on something that should be insignificant to her performance. Your cover up case now of childhood obesity is stale. She could have an ailment or glandular prob. making a joke at her expense is not calling like you see it's just unnecessary I would expect this from a kid not a 45+ yr old man. Talent comes in all shapes who are you to judge? Call me what you will I'm an adult lol & way to fabulous to give you a 2nd thought
Great voice - I can see you singing some of Dee Alexander's material. You have a great future ahead of you.
The Chicago Tribune visits jazz vocalist Dee Alexander during a recent performance at the Velvet Lounge nightclub. Alexander was selected as one of the Tribune's Chicagoans of the Year.
she has a really strong and good voice. She is also young....I would advise listening to A LOT of singers and musicians so she can get into the Jazz groove if that is what she wants to do. She has lots of potential and if it isn't Jazz, her voice certainly has a spot somewhere with all it's power.
everybody interprets tunes differently but i dont think you should have held out all of the endings. Kinda of takes a bit away of the jazz feeling. Even if you didnt want to do it at a swing tune pace, i dont agree with using legato throughout the whole tune.
I'd guide this voice toward Broadway unless there is a true passion for jazz (I don't think this is the case). It's very good but uneducated. The feeling is completely missing. It was a loudly sung song with no changes in dynamics throughout. I sense that exposure to good music has been limited. Exposure to artists like Ann Hampton Callaway,Audra McDonald & Marin Mazzie could help teach rendering songs in a way that makes people feel. Watching/listening to B'way show DVDs could be helpful, too.
Very good for a sixteen year old. She has a very good voice, but she needs to learn how to sing, not yell, and about how to swing, sing in tune and interpret the song. She has to learn everything, but I hope she does 'cause that voice is a very strong natural instrument.
The girl is only sixteen but it looks like she is a star in the making. Maybe some of the less than civil commenter's will have to eat their words in a few years time. She has a lovely powerful voice. She is good just now, but I reckon she will be great in the not too distant future. Good luck to her.
she makes wrong the intonation on 7th bar , the theme touches a b9 but she does always only 9 . The chord in this tonality must be D7b9 and she sing D79 . She loses intonation at the end , and the bass doesn't really know the chords. She hasn't swing, interpretation and jazz feeling. But she has good voice.
The room has bad acoustics. If she could have backed off a bit and incorporated some more rythm and phrasing it would have been much better. Good voice, though.
It was a studio recital and not meant to be a professional recording. The acoustics were what they were. No offense, but "rythm" is spelled "rhythm. "
It has also been performed by classical singers and punk rock groups. So what? Does that make it a punk rock song or classical song? It is probably not the only pop tune your choir sings.
true, nothing really jazzy about it - it lacks rhythm, phrasing and it's all the same from beginning to end - in mood, in phrasing and in tone quality. and pitch problems? very minor ones, but that's just another example of how inexperienced this girl is, not a lack of talent., and is not a fault. maybe if she had real jazz accompaniment that would change her and we'd see if she really had the feeling for rhythm and improvization in her :-} overall, NOT BAD FOR A BEGINNER AT ALL!!! keep at it!
So, jazaban58. Pacing and tonal reclaimation are not musical terms, and reclaimation is not a word at all. So why don't you be a little more specific with your critiques.
Ok, if you are referring to the fact that she has pretty much one dynamic throughout the entire song, and she should pace her dynamics at a more meaningful way, then i agree. if you refer to pacing as to pace your self during an athletic race, then i don'tunderstand. As for the word tonal, it is a word, but i usually stated as Tonality, and her;s is not great but she has better tonality then some. reclaimation, is not a word, however, as jsu2943k stated, but reclamation is a word as you stated.
Pretty well on pitch the whole way through - but my gosh - colour and shade is so badly needed in her voice. It was just too forced from her. I wish novices knew that the only way to sing is NOT TO YELL! And being an 'amazing' jazz singer - she must listen more to the other instruments and refrain from singing this standard in such a "straight 8's manner'. Keep trying.
it makes me mad when ppl bash vids like this...um,ye...obviously the acoustics arent gunna sound the best...its a home video retard and this girl is good! at least shes getting on stage and showing her talent, i like the sound for this song.
why is it amazing that she can sing like this at 16? i know at least 12 people who sang like this since they were 7 and i swear on my life im not lying.
GREAT voice! But you needs to work on your stage presence and vocal expression. I hope someone gets ahold of that talent and really helps to train it properly -- you could have a serious career as a singer. Best of luck to you!

So, jazaban58. Pacing and tonal reclaimation are not musical terms, and reclaimation is not a word at all. So why don't you be a little more specific with your critiques.
Jsu2943k 2 years ago
2 reclamation, reformation
rescuing from error and returning to a rightful course;
If you did not recognize the word, well, ces't la vie... tonal reclamation is recovering from pitch problems in the middle of a song.
pacing?/? you do not know what it means to pace yourself during a song?
you're not just an imbecile, you're an ignorant one at that.
I usually leave good praise when it is due and good criticism when I think it may help a good performer.

She has a great belting voice and hits all her notes perfect...
But to be totally honest,
Her weight is going to hold her back a lot.
Most jazz places want to see Renee Zellweger and Ginger Rogers on their stage.
I have no doubt that she can work over that roadblock
But she's gonna have to work hard.
